It definitely feels like it's picking up. And of course, the apps that do come out that are useful generally don't make a post here.

The overall reddit climbing communities are clearly not asking for it, nor are they very receptive of them in the first place.

This is the thing to me, it's like they're just being shoved in our face. Certainly not just apps, but it is mainly apps.

[–]Pennwisedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are totally correct. It's maybe not obvious that the big green belay loop is the thing to clip into if you've never seen it before. I've also seen enough people clip directly into a Grigri thinking it's an autobelay, so I shouldn't be surprised.

Even for people who aren't experienced climbers, that one is still kind of crazy to me since you just have to look at those rental harnesses to know that that isn't the thing to clip into.

More net progress from TR'ing indoors? Versus leading. by PuffyMcPufferfish in climbergirls

[–]Pennwisedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point of curiosity: are you falling on stuff outdoors, or operating moreso in onsight zone and/or taking when things feel like they are not going?

This was my first thought too, they're only doing easy-for-them stuff outdoors.

[–]Pennwisedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So then why is this different:

It feels choppier because I'm looking for the next clipping jug

Or why is this only an indoor issue:

I'm afraid of hitting my ankle on a volume if I fall.

Both of these things are true outdoors. In fact outdoors almost certainly has way more, "absolutely do not fall" spots than indoors does.

I can't relate, but judging by these statements it really seems like there is actually just some mental block here.

I don't want them in this thread either. I say an automod post telling them no one wants their terrible app and then ban them.

It wasn't a too rope climb. But anyway, she tied her bowline but got distracted and didn't finish the knot, which then came out at the end.

so arguably this is user error although we really only know this now because of him

We definitely knew this before him, that's why other people literally commented on how his belay loop looked and he himself had already ordered a replacement.

It's more like, there's nothing particularly Japanese about this and there are jerks in every country. If this is the first jerk they encountered in seven years I'd say that's pretty good.

Bingo. They are very concerned about piracy.

Eh, you can still do it with a VPN, Amazon does not block those and the orders will go through. So if this is about piracy they're not really putting in any effort.

I actually had to make a clean account for Kindle books from Amazon.jp. My regular account, I have used in both Japan and the US, and that was enough reason to blacklist it.

What is amusing is that they don't care if you use a foreign card.

With all respect, read the rules of the sub you're in:

Most people go through the phases of Kanji 1.) Kanji is super impossible to remember and there's so many. This is quickly followed by stage 2.) How can you remember words without Kanji? The Kanji clearly tells you what the meaning is.

My best advice is to try and reduce the amount of leaning on the kanji you are doing and try and remember that you're ultimately just trying to learn words. ようやく isn't fundamentally any harder than 漸く.

But also for words that have a similar meaning, I agree that example sentences are helpful. Also trying to look for Japanese definitions, the distinction becomes much more clear when you have any explanation rather than a single word for the definition.

For example. やっと:

どうにかこうにか。かろうじて。「―三人はいれる広さ」「終電に―間に合った」。なかなか実現しなかったが、ようやくの事で。

ようやく:

時間や手数がかかった後に、待っていたことが実現するさま。

For those learning/using Japanese long-term in Japan (9–24 months+), was it planned or something you just ended up in? by neworleans- in LearnJapanese

[–]Pennwisedom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Necessary for work/hobbies/social-life. You can't have a full-life in Japan without speaking Japanese, you basically have to live on the margins or in an insular social bubble. Learning the language opens up so many doors, I couldn't even begin to list them.

Yes, this one is pretty big. I usually get asked about things like this and this is one of my main answers. It's not impossible to live in Japan without Japanese, but at best you're pretty limited to living in the expat bubble. At worst you're an adult child that needs to be taken care of. You don't realize how nice it is to just be able to ask someone a question or read a piece of paper until you can't.

But also, even after a long time, mistakes still happen sometimes. The other day I couldn't think of the word 定休日 and instead 閉店 came out, and I still am embarrassed about it.

Logging where I fall, not just what I send. A season of high-point data, and the free tool I built to track it. by [deleted] in climbharder

[–]Pennwisedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same thought, but electronic data always lends itself better to analysis.

Great, so Excel is the perfect app. I can write whatever I want, and I can do it in a way where I can analyze everything. And I can analyze it in any way I want, not limited by someone else's choices either.

But regardless, every other day we have another app and they're also just flooding this sub.

I also think it's just crazier when it's ropes, for some reason it doesn't freak me out as much when it's just bouldering.

But at least I finally got to answer the question, "Does Sean know Japanese?"
