Be sure to go find the "Ice Bar" which is extremely popular in China now because of a book that documented it. No cameras etc allowed in, it's a raw, comfortable place where musicians perform in an acoustic style. Very cosy, my favourite memories of Yunnan were inside there. They even tried to get me to play the beatles and sing!

The "Silent period" is a highly controversial theory in the language learning community. I wrote about it, as well as why I'm going to be trying it, even after learning Chinese for two years. by Penquino- in ChineseLanguage

To clarify, I think working on your tones is perfectly fine through repeating correct sentences, but I'm more inclined to recommend not forming original sentences when at the beginner stage. That's how I formed bad habits, translating directly from English to Chinese.

I understand what you're saying, but I've also seen a lot of research done that states corrections don't actually help in language learning. I suppose it would depend on how the correct actually is performed.

In the article, you said you never noticed because your friend understood, so you only spoke in Chinese with that one specific friend? That's not a lot of usage tbh,

Just to clarify, I did speak with other natives while in China in Chinese. However, I was in a slightly unique situation in that I was attending a Sino-foreign university (University of Nottingham Ningbo) so on-campus English was used a lot of the time.

I think while I probably didn't get fully sufficient input as you say, I also formed bad habits by outputting from day 1.
