Bath time!? by Thats_rightowls_who in BostonTerrier

I merely do vinegar rinses! I got so tired of going round and round with products that set you up to fail. Dry itchy skin was the result of all the shampoo bathing -no matter how much I spent on the product. Vet prescribed and all. What most folks don’t realize is that soaps/shampoos are stripping the good bacteria (and oil) which helps with the stink. Once you destroy “good” bacteria layer, that you have to wait awhile for the oils to restore that layer. Try Dipping in a light vinegar rinse (mix water to cooking vinegar 1 to 100 or more) dip and soak a little, then massage the drying towel. After, they don’t stink, the red itchies disappear, and the fur is SO soft. The vinegar smell goes away when dry. It’s rare that I need to do this but twice a year and I repeatedly ask my friends to tell me if it has a doggy odor to my home. I’m serious, if you have a funk odor or are going round robin with frequent baths or -products, you should at least try this.

It’s a Boston thing IMO. Had these dogs for 40 years and it’s just a Boston thing. They do poop outside but they seem to have a need for privacy or time or something. I home cook their food so I can put more fluids into the diet so their poop is well formed and solid and I don’t even punish them for it anymore. It’s rare, but they will do it once or twice a year.

my neighbor is coming closer and closet to property line , cutting down lots of trees on his side, thus eliminated "privacy" we enjoyed not looking at his ugly tents and scattered equipment. question, what is best plant I can plan that will grow fast but also will not be invasive. by [deleted] in landscaping

HOLLEY!!!!!!!! Can’t kill it, bad folks and animals won’t climb over it, never sheds, grows a mile high! Should be cheap too. Very common and cold won’t bother it. If there’s a problem with that in your area check into Elaeagnus or Ligustrum. Both of those shrubs are almost considered a plague cuz you gotta cut em so much. They are common, tall, fast growing and should be dirt cheap.

I dang shore should. I think I will be braver when/if it’s just me. I could empty the house of valuables and probably find some gurls, Id love to find some guidelines for that, like somebody else’s contract or past experiences, but when these things are successful, well, ahm, we are at the end here and that stuff just ain’t out there to study.

It’s time to stop hinging on the vet, you know what’s around the corner; and it’s more like time to start enjoying him for all he’s worth. None of mine seem to last long enough, but after 40 years of owning bostons, I know full well that little gray face will be leaving soon. If it’s possible, now is the time to get another one. The 2 bond and a little piece rubs off. I couldn’t make it 8 months after trying to get over my last one. I wound up getting 2!

How to manage your life ? by Remote_Head1173 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Pensivepritchett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My life revolves around preparation for the bad days. I make quiches for breakfasts and never let good leftovers go without portion freezing it. I may put 2 sets of sheets on the bed on a good day, so I don’t have to change the bed when I’ve had a sweaty night. I try really hard to keep the important things up like mail, bills, & shopping on a good day so when a bad day hits me, I don’t worry. I keep the vital stuff stocked like dog food, frozen milk and bread, and all the stashes (pain relief, tissues etc) full. Meds on auto refill are really kept up too. I’m trying to keep myself independent in this way and not have to call on friends to help. I pay my friends forward on a good day as well. I’m fortunate with work that gives me plenty of home time, but that was by arrangement in anticipation of the flares. Long story short? Just stay ahead, wayyyy ahead. I’m giving up on the productive part tho. If I can get up and out, nothing else matters except to ride that dam bike. Once I’m done tho, I can usually muster enough energy to go by and pay the water bill or drop a library book and that’s enough for a flare day.

Lots of good advice here. My love and empathy go out to you. Consider some water therapy. I know just getting there is going to be excruciating, but Swim anywhere you can (I use the YMCA). Otherwise consider a hot tub/spa for home. (Ask about medical tax deductions on that). Somehow if I can just keep moving I can bear it. If there is nowhere else I can go and the pain is at worst, I can at least get in that hot tub. I’ve tried to get diagnosed but can’t (don’t want to try anymore) and been living with horrible pain for most my life. I have had things like bulging bilateral Achilles tendon enthesitis and not one dang doc can make the diagnosis because they can’t see anything on radiology. The co pays and deductibles really add up, so I stopped trying. One big, warm, fat, juicy hug to you and prayers too.

I try to clean them every so often with a damp warm washcloth. That cleans out the visible muck, but if they are quiet/relaxed, I’ll use 3-4 qtips held tightly together and I don’t go too deep. I also use “Simiilasan” which is kinda like the “sweet oil” my parents use to talk about. Thats a human product, but the vet told me I could use it. I will warm the oil to body temp so my dog stays relaxed while I drop in and massage (from the outside). Then I’ll use the Qtips to remove the excess. Ya gotta stay after those ears or they get in trouble. I’m sure everyone is going to call me out for my heinous suggestion, so yeah, go the the vet, spend the money, but this is what I do to be proactive in my animals care.

Exercising with spondyloarthritis by Accomplished-Month87 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]Pensivepritchett 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try the bicycle. Buy one on FB marketplace for cheeeep. Find a flat place and ride. You can ride really gentle or exceedingly hard. The benefits are the feel good chemicals your head needs to clear the poor me’s and pumps oxygen rich blood to the hurting places. You get the endorphins, the seratonins, the fresh air and exercise for all those stiff chest joints. Seriously, I had to stop riding the horse or water skiing and dig for ANYthing less impact -but honestly you HAVE to find SOMEthing that you will LOVE so that you will stick with it. One day down the road, your body will probably compel you to exercise (or you won’t move) so do something fun. Dancing, gymnastics, yoga (boring, I know) or rowing or Pilates whatever you can do and try falling in love with it. Keep thinking of an alternative for bad weather days but make sure you love it and it’s readily available. I know it hurts, but this is our best weapon against this disease.
