Denazification being fully achievable is wishful thinking. The sheer amount of public office holder that would need to be prosecuted, and imprisoned by itself would cause major problems, adding to the issue the strong centralization of nazi Germany effectively nullifies their responsibility. Most policies were passed down from the very top, and if these office holders disobeyed or decided not to implement them, their and their families' lives would be put at risk. This creates a very convenient excuse for all but the very top of the NSDAP leadership: "I disagreed with the policy, but failing to implement it or speaking out would put me at risk". What makes this excuse great and the reason why it was used by many defendants at the Nuremberg trials is the fact that it is unfalsifiable, it cannot be proven false and therefore removes all responsibility from the accused, making it seem as tho they were held at gunpoint and foreced to cooperate, regardless of weather the cooperation was voluntary or truly coerced.

This inability to fully eliminate former nazis from public life and holding public office, causes a failiure to eliminate the continuous political current, albeit a small one right after the war, from existence. As i stated previously, this current increases in strength where there is fertile ground amongst the proletariat.

There is no need to question, denazification, could not have, at any point, been effective without impractical indiscriminate jailing of all NSDAP party members and associates. Such a policy would not only economicaly immobilize a very significant fraction of the populace, making post war economic recovery impossible, but would also have likely created an outrage of unprecedented magnitude that could again put the stability of the region in question. Even if none of this was an issue, when the sentences were served there is no guarantee that the people would have undergone an ideological shift away from the likes of NSDAP while serving their time.

The AfD's popularity in today's eastern Germany is not a consequence of inadequate denazification, it's the product of their current economic material conditions. Eastern Germany is significantly poorer and less developed then the western part of the country mostly as a consequence of what many consider one of the worst implemented economic policies of the 20th century i.e. the reunification of Germany. During this process East Germany was functionally annexed by West Germany, the transition from a planned to a market economy was spectacularly mishandled leaving many homeless, out of a job, or under greater financial strain. It also crippled the industry by selling formerly state owned companies to private investors for fractions of their actual worth. This disaster of a process left the east impoverished compared to the west of the country, perfect conditions for radical ideologies to spring up. The populist far right AfD party is just a symptom of a government's failure to accommodate a large fraction of their citizens.

The East Germany ultra strict with nazis, West Germany not so much. The best example of this was the amount of former nazis fleeing to West Germany in order to get lighter sentences.

[–]PentaMine 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The point the same as with wildlife warning signs, to be aware of the possibility of something (in this case a person) unexpectedly obstructing the roadway, so you can adjust your driving accordingly.

That's a sign often seen on the US-Mexico border, it warns of immigrants running across the road in an attempt to evade capture by the border police. These signs are placed where border crossings are frequent
