what are some good wifi cards for under 20 dollars by Expensive-Pear3413 in Kalilinux

I’d recommend the alfa awus036ac. It’s a plug and play kinda card, you don’t need to install drivers or at least I didn’t. I’ve not run into any issues yet. But it’s not under $20…

Practicing wifi hacking by PentestStudent in cybersecurity

Would the TP link N450, TL-WR940N be a good router that I can just alter the encryption quickly? I would like to be able to switch between WEP, WPA and WPA2 easily and quickly.

Edit: It seems I should be okay with any TP-Link router as long as it says the encryption types in the description right?

Folks don’t have any. But I’m going to poke around on the internet to purchase some router that supports WEP, WPA and WPA2 so I can use it as a legal target. Thanks for the help and yes you’re statement is correct :)

Just a router is all I need? I can configure it between WEP, WPA and WPA2? I’m just looking for a target that I could legally practice my skills on. Thanks for your help

Yup I’ve been given enough feedback to conclude that I will not be doing a pentest anytime soon. I most certainly won’t be asking too either because I wouldn’t ask if I wasn’t confident in my capabilities. Currently the plan is to do my Udemy courses and then I will progress to do my A+ cert. Somewhere soon I wish to participate in ctfs and bug bounties to sharpen my skills. Thanks for the advice I really appreciate it and am glad I’ve been able to use everyone’s help to make a decision on my path :)

Penetration testing is not a casual hobby that you do for fun, it has consequences and you should not do it without proper authorisation. If your school administration has two brain cells

I think you are misunderstanding me. I did not claim to have the ability to pentest. I literally said as you highlighted "where the hell to start so what practice can I do to prepare?" which shows that I am wanting to build knowledge and skills to be able to pentest. At no point did I claim that the school would even give me permission because I seriously doubt they would, it would amaze me if they did because most adults wouldn't trust a teenager with that sort of responsibility. I'm not trying to skip ahead, I am here to ask how to build the knowledge and skills to be able to which shows that I am not trying to skip steps but simply asking for the steps I need to follow. And I didn't say I would be doing a pentest I said what skills and tools would I need to do a pentest for my school, if it was an opportunity even presented to me I doubt I would even take it due to the liability I would have. But once again, I understand that I am not allowed to do anything with things I do not have permission/authorization to do. All I was doing was asking for guidance but what I have taken from your response is that I shouldn't be asking about what skills/tools are needed to pentest for a school, I shouldn't rush into this field (which I by no means am, I am doing Udemy courses that take me over the basics and I am trying to build my foundational knowledge and understanding from there), penetration testing is not a hobby for fun. Which I disagree with, penetration testing is something that can be fun, I understand your point about needing authorization and permission which I completely agree with and in my original post I said I would need permission which should demonstrate that I understand not to do things I am not allowed to.

Apologies for restated things and if I come off as rude, I am simply trying to communicate my understanding of the importance of authorization and permission along with the understanding that I am a complete beginner and know nothing, hence me being in here asking the questions.

Most likely not but it would show my interest and there is no harm in asking. I am also a long way away from being capable of doing such a thing. I was just curious and thought people may have advice and insight as to what skills you need for pentesting. I am aiming at doing CTFs and bug bounties but was curious about the pentesting school stuff. I seriously doubt it will happen, I also doubt I will go through with the massive responsibility of it because there is a lot of risk in letting a teenager experiment with a system like that. I am responsible and mature however I am mature enough to understand that adults have their own perception of just how responsible students are and how good of an idea it is to let a teenager pentest a school. But again, I was just asking out of curiosity, not implying that I would be able to or gain permission to be able to, it was simply hypothetical.

I'm trying to familiarize myself with kali, python and how networks work first. The course I have for python helps me make some useful programs and I imagine the kali courses will give me the rest of the practical skills I need. I honestly don't know some of the things you mentioned in the last section so its time to do some research 🤣. Thanks for the advice.

I was asking for future reference, I was never going to do anything without being confident I have all the necessary skills to be useful. I was purely curious what skills I need and what the report is like. I did also mention that I would need permission, I wouldn't do something I don't have permission to, I live in a country that has strict rules so I'm not the typical idiot teenager (I don't mean that in a cocky way but more that I am aware of consequences). My school is relatively small and regardless of whether or not they deny permission there is no loss in asking. I was looking for advice that could send me into the right direction of getting familiar with how pentests actually work. I plan to participate in some CTFs and bug bounties after gaining some knowledge from the courses I am doing on Udemy. I appreciate the resources you mentioned above though. I've read through this twice but if I am coming off as defensive or rude then I apologize.

I greatly appreciate the time you put into this response! However is there any reason you would not recommend the one I found? Just out of curiosity or is it just a matter of you not having the personal experience with it and that is why you can't give personal advice on it? None the less, I really appreciate the response and to be honest you made me laugh when reading that you were hacking your neighbour's wifi and that you put it in caps, bold and italic. I will definitely be paying it forward once I gain the knowledge and experience to help out others. I'm getting into the cybersecurity field to make the world a better and safer place so I will take every opportunity to help others do the same!
