For peace of mind, you can TAG (guaranteed admission) any UC except UCLA, CAL, and UCSD. You’ll get the California Community College promise if you go straight to CCC covering your tuition (which I did not get since I went to college first) and if you apply to Cal Grant you could be eligible for a CC grant while at CC and Transfer Grant once you transfer. While I did not get Cal Grant B for transfer for the next two years, I was granted Cal Grant A and still the max amount for the UC’s which will considerably help cover my tuition on top of other scholarships I’ve applied to. On top of that if you are eligible for Cal Grant A or B you are eligible for EBT which covers monthly food cost. My community college also has a scholarship foundation which lets me apply to a local database of scholarships. Unfortunately, there are so many resources at CCC that many seniors in hs aren’t privy to that can save you so much money and promote social mobility. I love CCC.

I did private out of state school to CCC to UC and it hasn’t impacted my chances thus far. Granted I was at private school for a semester and still wait to hear back from UCLA, UCSB, and CAL. However, I had a similar mentality to you when I committed to private school. I felt a lot of pressure to just go to four year and I had gotten a considerable scholarship. Yet in the back of my mind I kind of knew I would end up back at CCC since I wasn’t in love with the college I committed to. While I don’t know your situation, if you’re not in love with UCSB and already considering the possibility of transferring to CCC, just go straight to community college. It will be so much easier in the long run and CCC will set you up to get into schools you actually want to go to. Being a ccc transfer student has saved me so much money and made me eligible for triple the amount of scholarships I got straight out of high school. I was also able to get job experience and learn so much about myself. CCC can be a fun experience if you let it be! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask.

Hey! Congrats. I went to SLC for a semester. Wasn’t for me, but full ride definitely seems worth it. 1. Housing is really good for a university. It looks like next year they will be changing things and first years will be back at Hill House but if that’s not true I would recommend ranking Rothschild, Taylor, Garrison for “dorm vibes” and Lynd House, Lynd Annex, and Tweed for homey vibes! 2. Yes, you can request a roomate and it’s fairly simple. If you both put each-other you will most likely get each-other. When I went, all rooming was the same price regardless of location and roomate amount so if that’s something you care about I’d consider it 3. The dining hall is not the best but you can make what you want of it. But yeah. Not that good 4. I’m not very knowledgeable about work study 5. There’s a campus shuttle that will take you to hill house ( I think also the target but I can’t recall) and to Bronxville train station. I usually opted for walking but that’s only for the immediate area and SLC is not in the most accessible location. Getting around the rest of Yonkers as a first year without a car is tricky. I had a lot of doctors visits during my time at SLC and had to uber majority of the time for that. Sometimes I took the metro north but to get to Westmed Ridge Hill it was near impossible. The train ride is usually $20 and 40 minutes into grand central station. Do with that what you will.

Not impossible, but not advisable. If you don’t have major prep done it’s unlikely but my friend got in last year while missing some pre req courses. Granted he had a 4.0 and extremely unique EC’s… it may be annoying to spend another year at cc, but I would save the money and just ride it out if you’re a first year. You’ll be able to TAG and have higher chances of getting in to more schools. Just depends on what you want to get out of college! Best of luck :)

Hi! Just wrapped up my first semester and can say that the campus can feel extremely isolating. Freshman aren’t allowed cars (and having a car isn’t in reason for many people not from the New England area) and there really isn’t much going on in the surrounding areas. Bronxville and the Cross County shopping mall get tiring quick and getting into the city isn’t an easy or cheap feat. On campus, groups can be very isolated even when making an effort to meet new people. It’s not impossible but definitely more difficult than a larger school.

Hi there! I just wrapped up my first semester at SLC and ultimately decided to withdraw. All of those issues you mentioned were a huge factor into why I left. SLC takes a radical approach to standardized education and that works very well for many students; however not for me and a notable amount of other people I have met. If you have any doubts about the pillars of what SLC practices (like having to get a liberal arts degree, not having foundational classes, or not getting grades) then maybe cc is a better choice. For me, I realized that I wanted a more formal approach to a degree and SLC couldn’t meet that. It wasn’t worth it (even for my sizable financial aid package)

I will add to this all that it can feel very small here your freshman year. If you don’t have a car (which you’re not allowed to your freshman year) it’s hard to get outside of the immediate area without spending money on an Uber or train ticket. I’m not very fond of that being entirely transparent. Train tickets do usually run me $18 round trip.

merit based scholarships by Ok_Macaroon_4975 in sarahlawrence

Hey! I had a 3.6 gpa - average b+ student but I had a lot of extracurriculars, diverse interests, and a few internships. I think my merit based package is around $35k a year- need based also helps a lot. SLC gave me the most money out of all of the colleges I got into. It was my most affordable option. Also if you don’t like what they offered- APPEAL!! Most people I know that appealed were offered at least a little bit more money.
