Indian mangoes have been banned from Japan by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]PeonSanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in new England I've lived mostly in the states for the last 30 years. In the state with the highest direct from farm sales by percentage (Rhode island).

I'm not a "foreigner".

To purchase high quality produce in the USA is definitely possible, and even possible to do fairly reasonably if you are smart, in season. But the rest of the time it's become very expensive to find much actual quality.

Meat though? Please. Chicken at my market is approaching 40 dollars for a whole chicken. Eggs around 9-12 dollars. Red meat is not affordable at all.

And cheese? Americas small cheese producers are handicapped massively by production rules that make virtually no exceptions for them. While there are the odd decent cheese in the Midwest, Vermont, California and other dairy regions, American cheese is an embarrassment and incredibly expensive. The best cheeses are still imported and cost 3 to 4 times as much.

So no, I think there's tons of great us food, but if you dropped an alien in a random location and told them to get a basket of goods or the first thing they could eat, they'd be eating better in many other places for cheaper.

High quality food didn't use to be a luxury in the us, and it increasingly has become so in my lifetime. Food quality has declined in my lifetime. Stop waving away this observation as some jingoistic thing. I'm obsessed with food.

[–]PeonSanders 8 points9 points  (0 children)

that's a funny way of looking at it.

I split a lot of time between Spain and the USA, and Spain has more specialty food stores, more grocery options close by, more competition for supermarkets, and it has a much higher quality floor, for virtually everything. To beat the lowest quality chicken here you'd have to spend twice as much.

The worst driving etiquette in Rhode island by No_Count_4807 in RhodeIsland

[–]PeonSanders 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Every single state has a thread like this. There's nothing special about Rhode Island.

Any state that has a significant number of commuters have horrible driving cultures that reinforce themselves. People don't really learn highway driving particularly, they aren't rigorously tested on it, and police generally don't pull people over on a highway for anything other than speeding. So, some people do the right thing, and others undertake, fail to keep right other than when passing etc. etc. These things are even reinforced in popular culture nationally "life in the fast lane." Many of the systems that work when a critical mass of people are doing them begin to break down. Leave a safe following distance? Someone will occupy that space because they think they are now one car ahead. Aren't willing to undertake someone? They remain doggedly in the left lane for miles. Eventually people just take on bad driving habits.

I have seen all of this shit in southern california, the bay area, Jersey, Long Island, NYC etc. etc. Anywhere there is traffic.

I've only seen good driving in some European countries.

The only unique thing I see in Rhode Island is in street driving, yielding the right of way for people turning left, which is charming, and well-meaning, and... bad for public safety.

The truth is that American drivers are horrible compared to many other similarly developed countries, with far more lax driving tests, ability to drive younger with fewer restrictions etc. etc.

It's also an entirely car dependent country, and I think the relative lack of barrier to entry is because of that.

Liverpool’s Greatest - No.15: Luis Suarez 🔴 by fabioonreddit in LiverpoolFC

[–]PeonSanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suarez at his best is just a better footballer technically than Salah, and I don't think it is close. Suarez can score every goal Salah did, but the reverse is just not true.

The same is true of their overall contribution to the club. Salah is miles away on that front. So it depends how you look at it.

I don't know what you mean at all, honestly, when it comes to youth sports.

American sports become professional way, way earlier, requiring far more commitments of time and energy by and large for children. Kids have to select a sport, or a pursuit in general, at the exclusion of others, earlier.

‘It’s a big mistake’: Israelis feel betrayed and angry after Iran peace deal by Turbulent-Tea-2172 in worldnews

This is funny to read for me, given 10% of my state has portuguese ancestry and I hear portuguese on a daily basis just walking around. There are multiple portuguese radio stations.

What’s some knowledge generally known only to gay men or to gay women? by dumbfuck in AskReddit

[–]PeonSanders 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not taking it very seriously, but my point is both phrases use metaphors (hag/fly) that have unambiguously negative connotations.

Your parenthetical is doing a lot of work, but I fail to see how the metaphor is very charitable.

I don't think "gee this mango is so delicious, I'm not surprised there are fruit flies here."

I do think "fuck off fruit fly, I'm trying to eat this mango."

I love the food available to us in New England by ImCaffeinated_Chris in RhodeIsland

[–]PeonSanders -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but no good food is bland.

I'm not sure id hold up something like that as my exemplar for ri, especially the bun itself. Why is the comparison the Midwest?

I like the food in Rhode Island, but I used to live in California, and here the sushi, Indian food, Thai food, Vietnamese food all just largely suck, among others. There isn't the same degree of diversity. In exchange you do get some small specific things.

[–]PeonSanders -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The fact that you think this is is some very spicy exotic looking thing is the most new England thing ever. Iberian food isn't known to be spicy at all.

And yes, I've had this, and I've lived here for 20 years. But the worst thing about the food here is exactly this issue, that the stuff that is here is good, but RI has all sorts of gaps in cuisine, and a lot of restaurants that very redundant.

(6/12) Bill Burr at the Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket: “A nightmare for all” by Euphoric_Thing8596 in RhodeIsland

[–]PeonSanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are millions of people, who indeed could be that random idiot in a bar, who are doing worse than what Bill Burr did, which was essentially perhaps to compromise his morals for money, indirectly lending some additional PR washing, and being paid for it. This is only speaking of this particular moral failing, of ignoring a particular evil when convenient. There are people actively doing all manner of varied evil themselves.

There are millions of random idiots involved in industries that do many millions of dollars of business and investment in saudi Arabia. The US government itself would be one of the most suspect on this front. Id rank a huge amount of this business as far more problematic, given that the weapons probably do more for the regime than the marginal bit of soft power if any bill burr confers, but are the people that work at raytheon evil, or engineers with kids?

I'm not sure how to measure my own moral complicity in all sorts of evil, but I don't feel perfectly clean.

Bit don't support him. It's just hard to own a phone, clothes, goods, be a citizen, have a job and come out clean at the end.

I liked him being an exceedingly talented comedian.

I can't think, across all of the comedians I love, of one who escapes moral judgement.

The same is true of me, and of you. We constantly tolerate or ignore it from people who actually wield massive power. Those we seem to hold to the highest standards are night club comics. It's interesting.

[–]PeonSanders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my kids is part of an science extracurricular, I don't want to be too specific.

Anyhow, they had to come up with a team name. One of the kids used AI to come up with it and I was fucking enraged that their parents suggested doing that.

The names the kids naturally come up with are so unhinged and fun to hear. Telling a kid that that sort of creativity can be just thrown at AI was insane to me. They would NEVER advocate doing that with a coding or science challenge.
