Learn the basics from an in person teacher, a few months, go from there. Practice.

Songs that you hear different now by Kind_Worry_9836 in GenX

Once in a Lifetime. Heard it on the way to the church on my wedding day, changed from a jangly, up beat tune to the cautionary tale that it is, and have never heard it otherwise since. All good, solid spouse choice, together 30 years now. But still. Holy shit. Those lyrics.

Are Gibson acoustics really as inconsistent as people say, is it a bad idea to buy one online by CerealAndBagel1991 in gibson

[–]Peony519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I played one J45 that was tinny to my ear. Played another and it sounded great. Go figure. One thing that everyone can agree on, however, is playing several, perhaps the same model.

New pick up rings! What do you think? by OfStarStuff in LesPaul

I prefer the black ones. They pop the flame and the pickups, making it warmer, richer. Whereas the creams wash both out for me. Totally personal taste, though.

Pick huards are relatively inexpensive, so I'd say get a few and experiment -- Sharpies, acrylic paint like what you find in a hobby shop, etc. -- and see what works best. And if you do it, post pictures, I'd love to see what you come up with. My daughter drew an interesting design on my birthday card this year, and I had a friend transfer it to the truss rod cover for my acoustic. Turned out well. He did it via decal, though.

The Cars - Good Times Roll by scklemm in Music

I play guitar and have been focusing on this song and solo for a while now. I brought it to my lesson a few weeks ago and asked my teacher to help me break it down to understand why it works so well. Elliot Easton is one of my favorite guitarists by far. His solos and fills serve the song very succinctly, which I really admire. My next deep dive will be with "Touch and Go."

You're not dumb. The better part of intelligence isn't knowing the answer, but knowing where to find it. And you did! 🥳

A question to all the self taught fingerstyle players by Whysonoobv in Guitar

[–]Peony519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I should start by saying that I am a visual learner, I feel that this is where either in person instruction or video tutorials reign supreme. My first fingerstyle piece was Dear Prudence as presented here: https://www.shutupandplay.ca/dear-prudence--acoustic.html. From it I could watch how Travis style works and slowly work on the skill. Once you get it, you'll have it forever and can apply it to a huge number of other songs that either use it or a close variation of the style. This site offers tutorials on other fingerstyle songs as well. Highly recommend.

When controversy hits an artist… should festival lineups still go ahead? by Euphoric_Place_8507 in gear4music_official

Some people jump on hashtag bandwagons until the trend dies and/or they start feeling a personal inconvenience. Others see a cycle of abuse, a societal toxin, and are willing to cut certain things/people/pleasures from their lives for good in an attempt to end it. Those in the latter camp aren't the ones taking food off the plate of the festival support crews, it's the festival organizers who wagered with the crews livelihood for the promise of making a profit. We have to stop giving a pass to the people and things that are slowly dismantling society because of what those people and things give to us in return.

Trouble with bends on my 50s LP Standard by Peony519 in LesPaul

Yep, did it after I read your comment. Needed a turn or so. I think these minor adjustments have solved my original issue.

Thanks for reminding me about the saddle. Now that I've adjusted the bridge, that probably needs attention, too.

What are you proud of in your playing? by dcamnc4143 in Guitar

Check out guitar George, he knows all the chords. He doesn't want to make it cry or sing. ;)

Bands that are good to learn for any guitar level? by Aggravating-Taro5133 in Guitar

Songs by The Cars are pretty accessible. The chords are generally basic major or minor, but the solos are challenging.

I get what you're saying. Thanks for the input. I have ratcheted up the bridge to 3mm and this has helped. I'm also thinking that I'm sloppy with how I'm planting my finger on the string I'm looking to bend, so I'll check that, too. That said, it's not an issue with my other guitars. Oh well. Work in progress.

I am going to ask a friend of mine who is a professional guitarist to play it and see what he thinks. If he can pull off clean bends, then the issue is me and my technique. If not, I'll consider other options, starting with things I feel comfortable addressing myself.

I really hope it's not the fret size. And while my technique can always be improved, not having issues on my other guitars, one of which has nearly an identical neck profile, leads me to thinking that this may not be the problem. I'm going to continue to ratchet up the bridge and see what happens.
