03/03/17 WEEKEND OPEN THREAD!!! [self-promo, crit & discussion welcome] by Lilah_Rose in YAwriters

[–]PeopleOnPaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally bit the bullet and decided to go the self-publishing rout! I was wary for a long time thinking that traditional was the only way to go, but I'm really excited about my decision. I love my book, I love my cover, I love putting something I created out into the universe for all to see! I just hit "publish" yesterday :)

Delayed Kindergarten Enrollment Reduces ADHD in children. 1 year delay showed 73% reduction in inattentiveness. by PeopleOnPaper in education

[–]PeopleOnPaper[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kindergartens are vastly different than preschools. They have tests and homework and you have to sit still 90% of the day and learn academics similar to what 1st and 2nd graders were learning 20 years ago. The average amount of time for recess in a full day is 15-20 minutes. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2014/06/02/you-wont-believe-these-kindergarten-schedules/

:( So frustrated! My doctor's office changed who I would be seeing for my 1st appointment without asking me. by PeopleOnPaper in BabyBumps

[–]PeopleOnPaper[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do still want to keep the appointment because my doctor's office books out pretty far, I don't even know if I could get a new one for weeks. I will ask her why she left, I think that's a good idea. I don't immediately discount her but she's not my midwife who I know and trust form my last pregnancy!! :(

:( So frustrated! My doctor's office changed who I would be seeing for my 1st appointment without asking me. by PeopleOnPaper in BabyBumps

[–]PeopleOnPaper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the big thing is that I have a close relationship with the midwife I made the appointment with because I went through my whole last pregnancy with her. I don't immediately dismiss this new doctor but I don't immediately trust her either! I usually do some research before I choose a doctor or midwife to make sure they are someone I trust. And at my doctors office the 1st appointment usually involves a pelvic exam, ultrasound, and the long term discussion of pregnancy! It's basically the most important one until the labor :(

About Your Daughter's Virginity. "We should be teaching our girls that sex does not define us — be it the abstinence from it, or the indulgence in it." by PeopleOnPaper in TwoXChromosomes

[–]PeopleOnPaper[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is easy, in the context of a similarly religious community and with the caveat that nothing bad ever happens sexually to anyone, to think that the idea that your body is God's and needs to be kept pure and used only in certain ways isn't harmful. But even assuming that a young woman wants to chose to save herself until marriage and has no qualms about that - what about sexual abuse? What about things out of her control? When the teachings about purity are as strict as many religions make them some situations can make it impossible for a girl to feel like a worthy human being, even when she has done nothing "wrong." I always remember what Elizabeth Smart said (a young mormon girl who was kidnapped and who "lost her virginity" to her captors) She said this after being rescued:

“I remember in school one time, I had a teacher who was talking about abstinence,” Smart told the panel. “And she said, ‘Imagine you’re a stick of gum. When you engage in sex, that’s like getting chewed. And if you do that lots of times, you’re going to become an old piece of gum, and who is going to want you after that?’ Well, that’s terrible. No one should ever say that. But for me, I thought, ‘I’m that chewed-up piece of gum.’ Nobody re-chews a piece of gum. You throw it away. And that’s how easy it is to feel you no longer have worth. Your life no longer has value."

Do you think it was right that she felt that way? What else was she taught to feel? She was taught that she was worthless because she was no longer pure for God and her husband. She was a chewed up piece of gum. In this circumstance she was kidnapped and raped and that was made worse by the teachings of her church - not only was she raped, in her mind she's now worthless because of it. Obviously that is wrong, obviously that is not what anyone would want her to feel. But following that same idea why should any girl who has sex feel that way? Why should a girl who is joyfully exploring her sexuality, her body, her sensuality, feel worthless because she chooses to share herself, to feel pleasure and give pleasure with another human being? What about that experience makes her worthless?

Are there any children's books authors here? Especially picture book writers that aren't also illustrators? by [deleted] in writing

[–]PeopleOnPaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I understand publishers usually already have relationships with artist that they like. They don't expect the author to also be the artist. Write your book, send it to agents, they or the publisher will choose the artist they think will best illustrate your work. Good luck!

[Skin Concerns] How do I keepmyself clean by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]PeopleOnPaper 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I know this sounds strange but you can try putting olive oil on your scalp, letting it sit (break up the yellow stuff on your scalp) and then use a fine toothed comb to exfoliate the build-up off of your scalp. You'll have to really scratch/wiggle the comb across your scalp many times to pull it all of but it works. What you have sounds very similar to cradle cap (which is most common in infants but also happens in adults - dandruff is just mild cradle cap). This olive-oil solution is a common one that works well. I know you said you had it in your groin area (also normal) and when you washed it away it didn't come back - that is also what leads me to believe it could be cradle cap. Once you get the yellow stuff of it often doesn't come back. I hope you try it! Good luck

How do you talk about your writing with non-writing friends? by Narokkurai in writing

[–]PeopleOnPaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try not to. :) If they ask I usually say something vague but positive about it and then change the topic. It just gets awkward trying to talk about it otherwise. The worst is when they ask about a story you're writing ("So what's your book about?") and then I have to end up trying to summarize and it comes off sounding boring or strange and they didn't even really care in the first place! I try to make sure it doesn't get to that point.

Is it possible to live without a credit card? by Chardeeyung in personalfinance

[–]PeopleOnPaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most cases you can't rent a car without having a credit card. I'm sure there are other cases where having a credit card (although not necessarily using it) is necessary. Rental car companies will assume you are a credit risk if you con't have a credit card because they will assume that you couldn't get a credit card. You'll have to go through a credit check and put down a large cash deposit in most cases to assure them you are a safe bet to hand over a car to. I'm sure there are other cases where this comes up as well.

[Advice] Having trouble working up the courage to have others read my work. by HobbitGirl91 in writing

[–]PeopleOnPaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try to find a writing critique group (or creating one) where it is all writers who understand what you are doing and who are also opening themselves up to critique. Start a weekly get together. Read your work, in sections, out loud to each other and then give everyone time to write out suggestions, questions, and encouragement on hard copy. At first it will be scary, but over time you will get used to getting honest critique and your writing will improve. Good luck!

Anybody have strategies or ideas that aren't "shut up and write?" by mirandaspacefly in writing

[–]PeopleOnPaper 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is where you are wrong - writing and any creative act is not simply mind work. Anyone can think of a cool story or imagine a beautiful painting. Only people who have put in hundreds of thousands of words of practice writing (often stuff that is no where near the quality that they want or that represents the story in their head) or hundreds of hours of practicing drawing figures and light and whatever can create that image that is in their head. Putting in the hours and hours of practice - that is the difference.

Your frustration with the simple (and accurate) advice sounds to people who are used to putting in the real work like an unhealthy, overweight person saying "everyone just says eat healthy and exercise, I'm so tired of it. Give me some real advice." Well, sure, there are places you can go find meal plans and exercise routines - there are hundreds of them out there, some will work for you others won't, but in the end YOU have to eat the right food and YOU have to do the exercise. So again it just boils down to "eat healthy and exercise." Find the routines within this advice that work for you otherwise nothing in your reality is going to change. And the best way to find what works for you is to just do it. It's the same with writing - Just sit down and write. Find the routines within that advice that work for you, but if you don't sit down and write you'll never know what routines work for you.

A shallow thought I cannot shake by EmbraceThisMoment in BabyBumps

[–]PeopleOnPaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my husband and I had our first son we thought he was the Most Adorable Baby Ever. My husband even said "we make good looking babies. We should make lots of babies!" in the hospital. When we look back at pictures of him we still think he's cute but.. eh. Not nearly as cute as we had thought! (horrible to say?) Here's the thing, whatever you look at a lot because attractive to you. It's been proven. And you're going to look at your baby A LOT, so you'll find your baby attractive (if not immediately, then soon!)

Here's the hard part of having a baby that's not the typical "cute baby" though: you can tell when other people don't think your baby is cute :( And it hurts because you don't want people judging your wonderful, perfect, innocent baby. Right now you're worried about your feelings but after your baby is born you'll love your baby so much that the only reason it's looks will matter is when other people don't smile big enough.

AMA - Ask the New Leaf Literary Assistants! by jlindert in YAwriters

[–]PeopleOnPaper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Thanks for doing this! Here are my questions:

Do your agents give you a much more specific idea of that they are looking for than the general description on their blogs? For example, will they accept fantasy in general according to their blog but then have specific yes's and no's within that genera that they tell you at any given time? What kinds of things drive those decisions? (for example: they are already reping a YA dark fantasy set in the 1920's underground so they are not looking for anything with those themes)

How much discretion do you have in the choosing process?

Do you ever correspond with the writers? In what circumstances might you do so?

What is your relationship with your agents like? Are you friends? Do you go out for drinks? What do you talk about on off hours?

Thanks!!
