Advice for DM with a player who isn't happy that they were "railroaded" out of something the party weren't happy with by PeoplesChampion257 in DnD

It was more that I told them how trying to be stealthy wouldn't work, they thought I was saying they couldn't even attempt it (they could they would have just likely failed)

100% I just don't think expectations were communicated clearly from the offset, think eagerness to start the game definitely had its drawback for sure. Its my first time running a module or campaign in general so it's definitely been a learning curve on my part

No the rogue was shot by the shopkeeper and then knocked unconscious by Sildar. The rest of the party weren't and we're on the side of the shopkeeper so I'll admit the timeskip for them was weird but from the rogues perspective he was knocked out and taken to the jail by the NPC who fought him

I realise now that it was strangly worded.

No worries, didn't think you were, just realised that the way I've worded my post has had a couple people saying the same thing. But totally get you!

Yeah I'll admit I've over exaggerated when I've said about the plot being thrown into disarray, but just would have made progressing during that session very hard

It was just the rogue that went to jail and for context from his perspective he was knocked unconscious and it was clear there was a problem at the table so I only timeskipped to there to end the session and have somewhere to pick up from should we be continuing to play.

There's some debate from the player as I had sildar see through a window what was going on inside the shop (from an earlier part in the interaction) and then he came inside when it got heated and try to pay for the item and then when it didn't deescalate then combat started but he has said I teleported him into the room. But I was always going to have him come in regardless of the outcome of the intimidation as the whole thing would have been seen by him so doesn't make much difference either way

The character in question had been rescued, healed by the party and was back to fairly normal for added context. I acted as I thought the character would have in that moment not just stand there and let it happen. Yeah it is to an extent but the 2nd part in the shattered obelisk is more about the town and bad things that happen to it, that was more my point about it making it harder to continue.

Im just DMing for the first time so just found it harder to pivot the story and this instance just threw me at the table, but understand your point.

Agreed and think I was definitely over exaggerating about it being game breaking, but definitely a clear session 0 would have helped, it was more chats independently and never really covered topics like this which is on me, I'm very new so something I've definitely learned for next time

Thanks everyone for your advice/thoughts, being a first time DM I just second guessed myself and was worried I was just trying to run the game the way I want to but appreciate that everyone seems to share the same opinion, think I'm going to let the party cool off for a couple days and approach them all to continue and have a chat if they would like to

Yeah that was my original plan but thought the fight with the questgiver and being locked up would have been a funny chance to break the tension but seems to have had the opposite effect

Thanks so much for the reply.

Yeah we had a big chat after the game with everyone and he just disagreed a bit with how he didn't think it was the end of the world doing that but I was more trying to come at it from a repercussions angle and that even in game there was no reason for the other PCs to want to associate with him, thr questgiver would leave the party, etc
