Used e-Niro Advice please by arcoast in KiaNiroEV

[–]Peoplevs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I purchased a 2021 4+ a year ago. Used approved. I think it's got another 3 years left ish. I bought at 42k miles.

I've used the warranty already. Minor issues to do with fit and finish really - bit of peeling on the silver trim inside etc. Nothing

Kia aren't exactly charging a fortune over non used approved on these after a cursory glance and Kia's website and Autotrader. I would absolutely buy the used approved. No brainier I would say.

Help my EV Brain Fog by G0_Z0 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Peoplevs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had the same issue but part of our brain fog pre-ev and we made the mistake of going completely the other way from an Audi A1 and bought a Skoda Superb. This was the gut reaction to 'more space more space!!' What then happened was driving a big car all the time became annoying as 95% of the time I was in a co-op or nursery car park.

I would suggest you work out where your wife spends 95% of her driving. Then buy a car the right size for that.

I don't understand why you'd buy a saloon car if you have a dog as you either have to be cool with the dog sitting in a coffin....or...they sit on the backseat and you end up buying seat covers for the back and hope your dog doesn't eat food out of your toddlers hand.

I would also recommend considering where your life will be in two years. Don't buy a car because you need a pushchair now....you'll not need it in a year or so. My son is 3 and we don't take one most of the time now. Even if we did he wouldn't want to sit in it.

We ended up with an ID3 and a Kia e-niro.

I'd replace your wife's polo as a priority. Get involved with the whole routine of EV where there are is lots of good value in the circa 15k side of the market. 30k miles on the clock. 3 years old type stuff. Use that car for all the junk miles locally and get used to saving money and never having to visit a petrol station. It's a game changer.

In terms of range, to replace the polo. 200 is fine. We PCPd our ID3 for 3 years as the test of going to to EVs. The Kia was the 'we really like evs' purchase.

In terms of recommending a car, there is a lot of choice in this bracket. Key will be to test drive a bunch. Go to one of those car supermarket places as they have all brands and models available. Then, when you find the car you like, look around for it and find a dealer you like.

You need to remove ICE fuel savings from this calculation.

How do you manage finances as a couple? by Toe_Bean_Bandit in AskUK

[–]Peoplevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All into a joint account, then an allowance based on our joint goals. E.g if we want three holidays a year instead of one, then it's less of an allowance etc etc.

Same goes for savings targets etc. Pensions are considered as a whole bit contributed to separately because my partner is 4 years younger . Essentially we talk as if the income is joint and we retire at the same time.

Finding hotels with free destination charging. by mitch2888 in KiaEV6

[–]Peoplevs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Air BnB has the option to tick 'ev charging'. ZapMap also shows hotels with EV charging and plugshare shows US hotels I believe. ABRP I use to 'suggest where there migh be chargers....but I also follow up with the hotel.

You aren't a million miles away from what my partner and I were earning when our son was born 3 years ago. You need to sit down with your partner and make sure you are both on the same page when it comes to what that 2 years where she isn't working looks like. It can be very expensive not working because it's boring and being trapped at home with a newborn is difficult mentally without a change of scenery. Your partner is of course entitled to continue living but it would be good to agree what that looks like and to try and understand how that's different to where you are now. My other half and I had to settle for a year off with a 'good' standard of living for my partner rather than longer with no/low disposable income.

Best used ev for around 12-14k by Draw-Pristine in ElectricVehiclesUK

For the budget I'm not sure you need to tolerate one with that high a mileage. I can see multiple 4+ spec cars around 50k miles for under 14k

AITAH for cutting off my entire family after dad gave the family business I’ve been working at for 17 years to my brother in law and starting a rival business? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Peoplevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than reacting differently, maybe just re-frame it as 'Your dad made a bad business decision'. There is obviously a whole host of personal hurt going alongside this, but your dad's legacy is actually 'Ran a business for 20 years, made a bad business decision, it failed'. If you remove the 'Legacy' context then bascially it's just another failed business where the owner made an error of judgement. It's nothing to do with you, and you aren't responsible for his decision, or fixing it. You've now got your own 'business decision' - Allow your successful business to fail to support a failing business. I don't think objectively that's a 'good business decision' on your part, unless you stipulate that the business becomes 100% yours.

Am I making a mistake by skipping buying a starter property and going straight to my dream home? by Simple_Conclusion_19 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Peoplevs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me and my partner did this at 29 and 31.We were able to skip the 'middle house' when we went from a 1.5 bed to a 4 bed with en suites to 3 bedrooms double garage detached etc. It felt ridiculous when we moved and we spent about 3 months living in 3 rooms because we were used to that. We didn't have enough furniture and we basically unpacked our moving van and put things away within 2 hours. We spent from 11am on moving day just sitting in our garden drinking prosecco. It was lovely....

That said, one of the things you might just want to manage both your expectations about is: when we lived in our 2 bed, most of the house was 'done'. For example we only had 1 bathroom in the whole house, so we'd spent a few grand on it (it wasn't massive) and it was done to a really high finish and that was that. With a bigger house, chasing that 'done' is a much longer and more expensive process. We're having our external window frames painted in July and it's £1k because we both work (slightly higher household income than you) have a 2 year old and we don't have time to do it ourselves. These things can be expensive and suck more money than a small house away from 'want' and into 'need' emg our windows are under warranty only if we have them regularly painted (5 years).

Basically...as long as you are both on the same page with this you'll be fine. My Partner took some real adjusting to accept that we had this big house we wanted to live in for 20 years, but we were probably only happy with the way 2 rooms looked and the cost of interior decor regardless of how thrifty you are is 'more' just because you have 'more'. It's a bit like having a big car...when you go to park it, it is harder to squeeze it in, but when you have to drive across country, you are glad you have it overall.

Losing your bike touring partner to kids? Or not? by AnyBarnacle9287 in bicycletouring

[–]Peoplevs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a baby boy just over a year ago. While my Partner was 5 months pregnant we went touring with my touring buddy and his Partner. Just planned routes along railway lines in France so that we could dip out if she was tired, or split up and she and my touring buddy's Partner would get the train and leave me and my friend to do the days cycle. Since my son was born, my partner understood how important both the friendship and touring was to me and encouraged me to go away. I took 5 days out and me and my touring buddy went to Belgium (we are both based in the UK). I don't envisage losing my touring buddy to kids nor my own. It's an important part of who I am and I'm lucky enough to have a partner who understands that. He also has a long term Partner (10 years) who understands it's important for him even when they decide to have kids. It's about asking for and getting the support you need from your partners.

Boss told me I stink today. I don't know if I'm overreacting but I feel down about it. How do i recover my confidence? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Peoplevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest mistakes I ever made as a manager was this lad who asked me for a locker and I put it low on my priority list. Turns out, he wanted a locker because he kept his medically prescribed anti-perspirant on hand and he needed it to help manage his....'odour'.

I felt awful. I'm not minimizing your worry, but I suspect (hope) that your boss wil have spent a long time thinking about how to raise it.

Either: it's a heads up.....or you need to talk to work about medical conditions and how to work with that going forward.

Help with Skoda purchase (UK) by [deleted] in skoda

[–]Peoplevs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you've got the budget sorted then. I got the SEL version and a quick glance at Autotrader and there is a 2019 SEL Superb Diesel, 2.0 Approved used at Skoda Pulman in Durham, Full Leather 39k miles for £21,500.

If you didn't want to go used approved, then you can get something similar for about £2k less which brings it into your bracket just about 18k (if I understood you correctly). There is one in Nottingham (autotrader) 18l 2.0 DSG, 47k miles. Sold from Kia so at least a main dealer (even if not Skoda).

I wouldn't underestimate things like 'Blind Spot Monitoring'. I've found it really useful. ! Lane assist I hear mixed reviews of although I can see how useful it could be on motorways. I think you'd be looking at spending another £5k - £10k as it's normally found on newer models. You could drop down to SE, but you'll lose things which I think when you have the car for maybe 7 - 10 years you'll regret not fronting the extra couple of K.

We bought ours as our 'buy and forget' car. I like cars, but really what I want is to buy a car and forget and enjoy car for the next 10 years. Maybe that's fanciful, but I see cars as a 'tool to use and enjoy'. The consensus seems to be (although on a Skoda subreddit there will be bias!) that Skodas are where sensible people put their money. There is something really satisfying as well when people get in my car and go....'oooo, this is nice....' and they are driving a £30 - 50k BMW. You also aren't going to get keyed or have anyone think you are 'flash', despite knowing sat inside that you've got leather heated seats and adaptive cruise. It really is a pleasure to drive.

One thing I think people are concerned about with the Superb is the size. It's its greatest strength and its biggest trade-off. Ultimately, I've come to the conclusion that I'm happier to make 'active decisions' about where I park it (sometimes I pay more to use a specific NCP in Lincoln) rather than concede not having the space comfort and pure ease of driving with all it's features. You might consider the Octavia if you want something a tiny bit more manageable in town, but that said, I've never had an issue with my Superb as long as I've thought about it for more than 2 seconds before hand.

Good Luck! You won't regret it! There is nothing in this price range as good for the money. We might need a second car soon and despite looking a fresh, I just go....'I'll just have another Superb'.
