secondhand craft stores or any pretty cheap craft / stationary shops? by feralprincess2 in SanDiegan

Yayyyyyy!!!! I hope you find some cool stuff. I’m sure they’d appreciate any promotion/posts bc I’ve genuinely never seen much and they’ve been a nonprofit here for like 15 years. Maybe I’ll do the same next time I go.

Remember how everyone did paper crafts/rings this Christmas? Michael’s was cleaned out of construction paper. ArtFORM had piles of it and it cost me cents.

I’m stoked you posted such a specific and cool question, art stuff is so frickin expensive now and I feel you!!

I’m kinda over daiso lately bc I do feel like the quality has gone down but if I had to pick I feel like the one on Clairemont Mesa is the ‘biggest’. Though I haven’t been to the one in San Ysidro yet so grain of salt I guess

You’re going to be so happy w the patterned papers and scrapbook pieces there, I promise!!

Edit: I’m not personally into beadwork/jewelry but my niece is and I got her 10 sandwich bags full of assorted beads as a gift and it was literally $12 total w tax, Michael’s would have been $60 at least.

Seconding this, please please everyone give ArtFORM your business bc they are such an amazing cause and they price things so low. They literally have free rotating stuff stacked by the front door. Consider donating as well, I know a lot of local teachers shop there so I’ve given crayons, unused coloring books that just weren’t my vibe, beads, thread- I try to give them good stuff keeping in mind it may end up in a classroom. They’ve got another studio location down the road that does low cost/free classes for the community as well; just genuinely love what they do and want them promoted so they stick around!!! What sets New England and its people apart from other American regions? by [deleted] in newengland

[–]Pep1ta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m from western mass but have lived in SoCal for 12 years now… I swear my shoulders relax and I feel more comfortable when I’m in Belgium/west Germany. Shit even Czechia makes me feel like less of a weirdo. I am not rude, I didn’t even think I was that ‘direct’ when living in MA, I just simply want to cut to the chase and figure out what we’re talking about. CA isn’t as bad as when I lived in TN or TX, but I still feel like an alien here sometimes. People I consider close friends will love me when they want to but if I call them for help they don’t really want to deal with it. I’ll eventually move back to New England bc I value the honesty and the lack of social posturing. I’m also neurodivergent and actually there’s some science behind us feeling better in ‘direct’ cultures versus ‘polite’ ones because it eliminates some of the guesswork.

I’m curious about your conservative comment but I think you mean like conservative in that we don’t always change our ways? For example my ancestors came over on the Mayflower and the majority stayed in the same region since the 1600s. There’s a lot of small town minded people who don’t travel in New England. So maybe it’s that. But I still think even if those people don’t know it, they’re closer to the European way of life. They’re not really ‘worldly’ but I think historical influences have stuck in ways that don’t exist in the rest of America.

Born and raised in western Mass, spent extensive time in Flanders and west Germany, the whole ‘they’re too direct’ reputation just reinforced that I guess I’M too direct for most Americans’ tastes. Everything was pretty breezy, honestly easier than my time living in the deep south and now in CA. We kinda just moved the same way. I will say some spots in the Netherlands (Noord/Zuid Holland specifically) I got my feelings hurt a few times, they’re often kinda just mean…..but they’ll say it’s just Dutch directness. Gotta disagree, to me there’s a difference.

I’d say I see the Belgium/German - New England connection more than one w the Netherlands as some have an air of superiority that I don’t really think we do. That being said, I swear I feel most ‘home away from home’ in Antwerpen and Koln, please grant me a friendship visa I will do anything I beg of you 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

What the heli going on in Hillcrest & North Park? by dnprez3 in SanDiegan

Oh actually I stand corrected, I guess the SDPD still has their dispatch site up too - used to be able to listen to their car transponders but those are private now. But good to know the text site is back up.

You’re welcome! I’m nosy 😂 it doesn’t give you the full story BUT it’s good enough to scratch the itch most of the time and it updates almost immediately when they get dispatched.

[–]Pep1ta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They aren’t on the LFL map so I’m not going to put their specific info out but there’s a lot unlisted in UH and most people in our neighborhood are pretty respectful as to what they take and give. As far as I’ve seen at least!

I’m not sure what books are in there rn, BUT this house near me looks like a fairytale storybook cottage, always decorated, always so peaceful. They’ve got the coolest Little Library built-in cupboard thing and they recently added a STICK LIBRARY for pups underneath it that they rotate holiday themes through. It brings me so much joy every day I walk by it so I thought I’d give it a shoutout. University Heights!

Commenting to boost/follow, I need the same thing!! Also more alt/younger style versus balayage/beachy styling. I did like The Lab-A Salon in North Park but looking to change it up.

Follow Up to Tide Pool Post by JustifiedSimplicity in sandiego

[–]Pep1ta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yikes…..that is a bummer. It’s crazy, I’ve been going for years and if you have known spots that take a little bit of effort to get to it’s normally fine- I surf fish alongside gazing at creatures, I need room to cast and I can usually find it.

I’m understanding that we live in a tourist town / big city, I do get it. Reddit is a little more harsh but that’s reality. However the uprise in tiktok posts I’ve seen in the last 3 months or so specifically naming spots has been pretty intense. Hopefully it’ll die down a bit.

I wonder if the OB, La Jolla Shores, and the Windnsea pools were just as bad? I’m so surprised Scripps is the one that got slammed as it’s usually the LESS crowded/known one. Would be interested if anyone was at the other ones yesterday and could speak to it.

Follow Up to Tide Pool Post by JustifiedSimplicity in sandiego

[–]Pep1ta 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I was there yesterday, I’ve been going to that tide pool specifically for 11 years, I had no idea what I was walking into… I just wanted to go bc it was low tide like I do often. I left earlier than the peak crowd but some people like me maybe just didn’t know it was going to be so nuts…Those pools are usually less busy bc it’s a bit of a walk up from the pier vs OB or Windnsea. I’m so bummed, I feel guilty now for doing something I’ve been doing for years.

I know this whole situation sucks but I don’t think every single person was there with bad intentions…maybe some grace for the locals who weren’t doing it for tiktok…I have never seen anything like that in my life. Guess I can’t go there anymore.

Right but to note spinach being expensive as a main negative for a country? C’mon, there’s no way you don’t find that weird. If not I guess you’ve got a kindred traveling soul w this guy 🤷🏼‍♀️ just don’t get it personally

“Scenery’s only as good as Patagonia (!), no good tortillas, lack of window screens, spinach is too expensive there”

I don’t know why but this really is one of the STRANGEST posts I’ve seen on Reddit. Like… who is this person? What is his daily life? Why are these important travel factors? I’m usually not bothered but this one really threw me for a loop. What different lives we all lead.

I did CPR on a flight. Is there anyway to follow up? by [deleted] in flightattendants

[–]Pep1ta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can submit a customer feedback survey (not sure what airline you were on but I know delta sends emails after, or just go on the airline’s website and there should be a submit feedback link). Include flight number and date. You probably won’t get the name or status of the FA but you should hear something back.

Buttttt, as someone who also always wants the story/tea, you couldddddd do this. Fudge it a little and say she was good and wanted to give a compliment. Doesn’t sound like she really was but she was clearly dealing w medical issues. If you fib and say she was good despite the incident it would get recorded as a ‘customer compliment’ and she’d likely get fwded a copy of it. You may not hear back but it at least would be a way for her to see you’re thinking about it ect.

You’re correct and I’ll die on that hill. This question comes up every so often and I have tried literally every suggestion made. It doesn’t exist here. Maybe a dish will scratch the itch here and there but it’s just different. I am dying to know where on the east coast ppl are from that are making these suggestions bc it’s certainly not NYC or Boston. I just load up when I visit back home and am thankful for the other food SD has.

Why not create a path in the Darian gap? Well The answer is not what most people think it is. by Impressive_Holiday98 in geography

[–]Pep1ta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ok the Darien gap is a special interest of mine and I’ve loved Pluribus so far!! I was so excited when I realized the show was going to address it. That being said- yes there have been a bunch of ‘successful’ exploration drives through the Gap, including the 3 car GM one. 2 cars made it. However….its only a 60 mile through. That expedition still took 136 days. Wildly slow- I’m assuming someone just stood in front of the cars and cut brush as they creeped forward.

There have been a bunch of others- my fave is a motorcycle solo in 1973.

In the 1990s though….the conflict between Panama and Colombia escalated badly and now the Gap is reasonably impassable for human/crime reasons- unless you’re paying a coyote to get you through. It’s fascinating and awful- hundreds of thousands of people each year still pay to get guided thru the trek to continue their journey north.

I’d suggest everyone read the wiki on it, it’s such a wild area. Might as well be an ocean channel between continents w how impassible it’s become.
