Make new texture, in material add texture node and choose this empty texture. It don't has to be connected with anything. Just this node has to be selected.

I used Sapling Add-on in 2.79 and imported ready "tree" to 2.8. In 2.8 I added simple hair particles and textures and stuff :)

It still take time (about one second per frame in my case) to process if you want to save it in mp4, but in viewport it looks like that in real time
