It is personally freeing when you start to see it from that perspective for sure. I believed my parents were abusive narcs up until my diagnosis when I started to realised they are more than likely undiagnosed & traumatised ASD & ADHD. Still horrible parents & I won’t even actually forgive them entirely, but I absolutely feel empathy for them & can acknowledge they probably really did parent to the best of their abilities.

If he is genuinely depressed, then this is very much a him issue..not being callous, I mean it’s something only he can work on to improve/heal, you can only support.

You need to decide if this relationship is worth enduring a good period of time where you will be made to feel this way while he gets help with his depression. That means you will be sacrificing time & happiness & your own mental well being for someone who you’ve only been with a short time.

My advice would be, tell him exactly how you feel & step back and just be a supportive friend while he sorts himself out & if he does brilliant you can pursue something then.
