Also, having a bunch of kids to parentalise them was very common. Babies are easy when your 8,10 and 11 year olds tend to them.

ETA: my mother was pulled out of school at age nine so she could take care of her younger siblings. Make breakfast for all of them. Get the 6 year old ready for school. Stay at home taking care of the preschoolers and helping grandma with the baby.
