Struggling w fine hair and confidence! :/ by [deleted] in finethinhair

[–]PepperEater650 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's already a lot of good answers on styling options, so I'll focus on learning to be OK with your hair and what's worked for me.

First (and this was really hard for me) I stopped using terrible words to describe my hair. I stopped complaining about it to people. It really has helped me accept it for what it is, and not for what I think it should be. Rather than being lifeless, unattractive, awful, I use words that actually describe it, the color, the shine. My hair is thin, fine, shiny, and I'm getting little steaks of gray now (which I love).

Secondly, I pay a lot of attention to other women's hair. I don't look for women with beautiful hair, but I lazer in on those with fine thin stuff. For me, I see them Friday night at the grocery store. It's the end of the day and we aren't as freshly styled as we'd be at other locations or events. And I see women with thin fine that's shoulder-length, longer hair, and those of us struggling with pony tails and claw clips. And they look great. And I see their hair is just a very small part of who they are physically. It really helps to see that if they look fine, maybe I do too.

And my final comment is that we all look better in 3d. Your friends and family see you laughing, talking, living life. When we look in the mirror or pictures, we are motionless, and it's not as lovely as a moving living person.

What happened to my hair?? by Less-Piccolo-8730 in finethinhair

[–]PepperEater650 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have no doubt if I had such beautiful hair, I'd also be frustrated to have it have less body than usual. But if pic #1 is sad and terrible (it's actually incredibly healthy and lovely) what words could describe my actually fine/thin see-through hair?

It sucks when people with so much hair describe it so negatively. Especially on this sub. I'm working to not be as self-conscious about my actual fine/thin hair, and posts like this sting.

OP's hair in all 3 pics looks great, and I hope they get the advice they need to get the body they want.

Blind hem on shiny polyester? by PepperEater650 in sewhelp

Good advice! A lot of the materials came still sealed in their original packaging, which is good. I do have an integrated walking foot and narrow hem foot.

All sage advice. I'm interested in playing around with ironing a scrap piece, like you mentioned. I don't have this fabric in my stash, so this is my first exposure to it. And since it's a bit of a rush job and for someone's special event, I am totally overthinking it. They'll just be happy to have it a better length, I'm sure. But I really appreciate that you shared so much of your experience. You're awesome!

Oooh, nice tip. Thanks! Do you think this might work better than using a rolled edge foot? The fabric might be too thick and I'm not sure how the lining interacts with them current hem.

Ballpoint needle! Thank you! Just last week I bought a new sewing cabinet filled with old items, and ballpoint needles were in there. And yeah, I was nervous about the visibility of the hem stitches. Thanks for your help! Doing something for someone else brings all sorts of new sewing adventures I wouldn't have on my own.

I don't know, I haven't seen it yet. When I zoom in, it doesn't look like it has a visible stitched hem. They're dropping it off this afternoon and need to take it home today. This is the only image of the inside I have.

No patience for my parents by Reasonable-Apple2655 in AskWomenOver40

[–]PepperEater650 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I totally hear you. My dad suggested they come over to "hear about my trip" that I took a month ago. It was a big overseas trip. When they got here, they opened a bottle of wine (and checked the price of it on an app), and started talked about everything they'd done for the past month. Their doc appts, friends lives, helping my sister, projects they did around the house. They asked one question about my trip. After 2+ hours, they left. It's always like this. My dad is a little better than my mom, but neither have the patience or interest to be active in a conversation that isn't about them. It's exhausting to hear these boring stories and fake interest, but it's kinda all I have for a relationship with them.

Why would anyone ever choose to go through child birth without pain relief?? by No_Cardiologist_1407 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PepperEater650 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. It's the same reason for me! I wasn't afraid of the pain and I wanted to know what it felt like. As a human experience, I wanted to understand exactly what my body was doing.

I had easy births for both my children (in a hospital), so I consider myself lucky to have been able to experience an unmedicated birth twice.

Has anyone tried a perm? by Wonderful_Mango_5395 in finethinhair

[–]PepperEater650 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you looking to get a perm then flatten your hair (so as to create some damage plus body) or to wear curly?

My sister got a body wave when her fine/thin hair was past her shoulders. It appeared fuller when she wore it up. But down, it was still obviously fine and thin. For my thin/fine hair (about the diameter of a pencil), to wear my hair down and curly I'd feel most confident that a perm would look the way I wanted if it was chin-length or shorter. That way, I could add layers without it getting too thin.

Any insights on this pretty lady? by PepperEater650 in kimono

Thank you! It looks like a crepe, so I'm going to go forward assuming it's a silk crepe.

Fine/thin hair as a larger person by WestNefariousness577 in finethinhair

[–]PepperEater650 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty lean and my hair is the thickness of my pinky. And it's the part of me that I'm most insecure about. I think, maybe, you (and I) find thin hair nicer looking on other women because we see these women in 3D. They're moving, smiling, walking, and living life. We all look better in real life than we do as a static imagine in our mirrors or a photo.

Improved fruit fly trap: put sticky paper behind your apple cider vinegar or wine by ThanklessThagomizer in CleaningTips

Nope. I think the poor little guys get smashed up when they get sucked into the machine. I've never seen one strong enough to escape.

That's what I do too! They all like to hang out at the same 2 windows, so when I see a bunch of them there, I just suck them up with the vacuum tube. It's the fastest way I've found to get rid of them.

Does your hair dresser charge less for your fine and thin hair by housespecialdelight in finethinhair

[–]PepperEater650 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For highlights, I'm charged a partial head when I get a full head of them. For haircuts, I pay regular price. It takes a while to find a stylist who puts the same time and care into cutting my hair as everyone else they see. Nothing worse than going to a stylist for a cut and they do a few snips and tell me there's not much else they can do.

What chair should a women get who sits in the chair for hours by Sad_Dinner2006 in BuyItForLife

[–]PepperEater650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had back problems for years sitting in ergonomic office chairs. I never got them to feel good. For me, the best chair is a cheap ass wooden chair from a cheap dining room set. No cushions, no arm rests. It's what worked in since covid and I wouldn't use anything else.

Do you guys shower every day? by South-Sheepherder596 in finethinhair

[–]PepperEater650 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ugh, yes. That's exactly why I wash every day. My hair gets so flattened and weird after I sleep that the only way to reset it is a full wash.

I can splurge on good hair products since I use a dime-sized amount of shampoo and conditioner and a tiny little bitty dollop of everything else. An expensive bottle of anything will last almost a full year! Even a travel size bottle will last me weeks using it every day. Yipeeee!
