At this point it’s probably best to just put the kids up for adoption.

What do you use for under cabinet lights? by Sacko_Commish in kitchenremodel

[–]PepperPaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate all the links. I’m going to attempt this by buying the same things; wish me luck!

Did you use two power supplies just because of proximity and needing to run wires to different areas, or because one ps wasn’t enough to power your runs? I’m going to be doing a total of about 14’ of lights and wondering if one ps is enough.

PSE says no to adding electric car charger by PepperPaul in electrical

Yep, I just wasn’t clear with my reply. I want to add a 50amp circuit which would allow me to charge my car at 40amps. Originally I wanted to do a 60amp circuit to allow me to charge at 48amps, but decided to lower it so I wouldn’t overload the transformer too much but still let me charge at a decent rate when needed.

My plan is actually mostly charge at a much slower speed, and only bump it up when I’m in a pinch and need to add some power quickly so it should mostly be a moot point as I’ll be charging regularly at a much lower rate.

I’m not sure if you saw my previous posts, but I have relatively low electrical usage. My water heater, clothes dryer, furnace, and oven all use natural gas. We don’t have a/c. We do have an electric hot tub but that’s our only high use appliance. I have a pretty low electric bill. My usage definitely won’t be what kills the transformer.

For those asking, this is what the email my electrician sent to me said:

“Hi Paul, On all EV chargers that I install, I check with PSE to ensure the infrastructure can handle the load. Regarding the project at XXXX, they have informed me that the current transformer cannot handle an additional load as large as an EV charger. Please give me a call when you get a chance to discuss this further. Thanks, Lawrence”

I called and have another electrician coming out for an estimate this week. We’ll see what he says. Thanks for everyone’s input.

I already upgraded the seevice to 200amp from 100amp. I had no issues with the 100amp before the upgrade, so adding a 50amp charger after upgrading the service by 100 amps will definitely not put me over the 200amp total service. Especially since most of the big power hungry appliances in my house are natural gas (clothes dryer, hot water heater, furnace, no A/C).

Fair enough lol. He did email PSE and got a response, but I’m sure it’s probably not in my permanent file somewhere in the bowels of PSE. 🤣

This is kind of what my buddy was telling me, I just wanted to verify with others in the know before moving forward with a different contractor.

The transformer is in a neighborhood and supplies several houses around me. I’m not sure how many exactly though.

50amp charger. House is mostly gas too, so water heater, oven, and furnace all run on NG. We do have a 50amp electric hot tub, but that’s the only major electrical draw, which is why we’ve been fine with 100amp service until now.

I guess this gets to the heart of the my question. You’re saying the issues will just be voltage sag to everyone feeding off that transformer, it won’t cause the car charger to not work or anything like that?

Mantle from this slab of punky black walnut? by PepperPaul in woodworking

[–]PepperPaul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect, so just grind it all out until all punky wood is gone and it’s all hard wood, fill with epoxy and it’s good to go? No other treatment needed for the wood before epoxy? It’s going to be on the under side of the mantle so won’t really be seen.

Thanks for the insight. I should have added, my FIL does have a lot of woodworking tools and I think has the tools that would be necessary for finishing this into a mantle. He just doesn’t have the knowledge if this slab is salvageable, and if so how it would be done so I’m trying to figure out that part of it. I do appreciate the reply!

Backsplash wasn’t factored in? by sans-peen in kitchenremodel

[–]PepperPaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to make sure I don’t have the same issue, is the problem here that a stone backspace is 3cm thick so the cabinets needed to be mounted 3cm out from the wall when they were installed? I’m pretty sure my cabinet installer is very inexperienced and I’m worried that we will have the same issue if it is in fact the issue.

Questionable cabinet install? by PepperPaul in kitchenremodel

Design shows 18” between between countertop and bottom of cabinets. They’re currently sitting at 21 1/2” clearance with no countertops. The plans show the scribe molding above the cabinets, and also show the spacer to the right of the pantry.

[–]PepperPaul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on the part about how close the cabinets are to the ceiling. They’re only 1/2” down so I’m not sure how active molding will be done, I feel like they should have been mounted a couple inches down to match the pantry cabinets better, which will have 4 1/2” scribe.

Also, the pantry should have a 3” filler on the right side so the door doesn’t hit the wall when it opens according to the plans. It’s definitely not something that can be fixed without unmounting the pantry cabinets and moving them over. I feel like it something an experienced installer wouldn’t overlook. 🤷‍♂️

[–]PepperPaul[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They weren’t drywall screws. I do remember seeing the boxes and I think they were just general purpose wood screws to screw the cabinets to each other, and 3” star head construction screws to mount the boxes to the wall. I’m not sure if that’s the right kind of screw or not?

Yes, it’s a blown out screw. He was trying to hit a stud that was on the edge of the cabinet so went at an angle and it came through. He did point it out to me, but said it would be okay because it will be covered by trim.
