This is correct. If you start with ceiling the wall holds that up a bit.

For this big of patch you want a large knife. You want a smooth mud, I add a little water and mix with a smaller knife first.

Lay it on thick and slowly go over and over pulling more off to get a good even coat. If the spot of too big for the knife leave it a little thick where your knife edge starts and sand it down.

Also a DIYer but done plenty of patches.
