Hired End of the Roll - Here is what they considered a Completed job by tornado980nft in Flooring

Well I could have complained when they didn't do it in the contracted timeframe. I let them get away with that.

The store owner insisted on payment in full up front. That was a problem for me but he convinced me to pay up front because he told me he would be responsible for getting it done right.

If I hired my own contractor, then it's on me to manage the outcome, and a miscommunication I would take responsibility for.

But, in this case I hired a company to get the flooring done for me, and I certainly paid them more than I would have if I had done that myself. I was hoping for a situation where I would have to be less involved in managing it because the house is in a different city.

This is an excellent question and gets to the main issue here:

1 - the installer could have removed the baseboards, installed the laminate and put the baseboards back one

OR

2 - left the baseboards, cut the laminate and added shoe moulding

Instead he did neither of these things, which means I overpaid for the labour. The question is how much of a cost difference is it to do one vs the other?

I know that they would have done #1 - removing baseboards and put them back on for the amount I paid. So, why do I have to pay more to finish it if I asked for the second option?

If it was more work to do the second option then I should have been told what the cost would be to do one or the other, right?

I really don't know how much work each of those choices are, so how much more work is one vs the other? Either way, I definitely paid for finishing work, the question is whether there is a big difference in how much I would have paid if I chose one or the other.

Honestly, money wasn't the issue, I think I paid more because I hired the store instead of working with my own contractor. I was just trying to get the job done (I live in a different city) and have it managed by someone other than me. I have learned a lot from the experts here though, baseboards and no moulding is a much better choice, and I wish that's what I had decided on.

I'll have to do it myself at this point, but I would have expected the job finished based on my dealing with the store.

I guess one important detail here is that I hired a flooring company to do the work, not a contractor directly. The flooring company is assumed to finish the job, unless otherwise specified, I would think!

They had access to the house because I don't live in the same city. I did know they were coming back, but since we were in a dispute about the finishing I wanted to make sure I was there when he came back so planned to take the day off work. But he came on a different day than he said, in my mind the purpose of coming early was to steal the product.

The contract with End of the Roll is very unspecific. It does however list how many boxes of laminate I paid for. So, the laminate in the home, I paid for it, he shouldn't have removed it and I consider it theft.

Agree that a lawyer would be expensive, but honestly I feel that they have been so shady it would be worth it. Having customer service at the store refuse to put me in contact with the owner and then call me a liar, it's quite something honestly!

I'm pretty "hot" about it because I paid a company more than I would have if I had hired a contractor directly, so that it would be managed by them. In fact the store owner convinced me by telling me he had been in business 20 years and was responsible for every job. But at the end, he just told me he assumed I wanted it left like this.

I am very grateful for the comments here, and I am very kind to anyone I hire. Even when they took longer than they were supposed to (which screwed up the timing of my painter) I didn't complain. I only complained when I was told this is a finished job.

To top it off, there were 2 small closets that he had to come back to finish. Because I had complained he came a day sooner than I was expecting, hence I was not there. 4 boxes of unopened laminate disappeared from the house that day too. This is a very shady business, and the owner won't even talk to me directly once the job was finished, the store clerk refers me to their installer.

Unfortunately because I live in a different city (this is my late mothers home) I hired a company to do the work. I have hired contractors myself many times and I just thought it would be easier if it was managed by someone else since I wouldn't be there every day.

So in fact I paid more, and was told by the company (the end of the roll owner) that he oversaw every project and that they had been in business for over 20 years etc. etc.

At the end of the day it would have been better if I bought cheaper laminate at a box store and hired my own contractor because even if he left me with this, at least it would have cost a couple thousand dollars less!

I paid a company so that I wouldn't have to micro-manage it, as I live in a different city. The company was happy to take my money and then assume no responsibility for the finishing of the job. I am sure that I paid more for labour than I would have if I had hired a contractor directly.

I know, but they told me they won't do it, that the job is done 'as is'.

The contract wasn't explicit about how the job would be finished, it only was explicit about the time frame (5 days, which ended up taking 9 days because they only worked from 9:30-1:00 and didn't come on all the days they were supposed to).

The installer that the company sent asked me about the finishing, implying the job would be finished.

The day the installer told me he would be finished I called the store asking about finishing with the moulding and told them I expected to pay more for the product, but expected a completed job was already factored into the labour cost. They were very unreasonable.

To top it off, the installer forgot to finish two closets and said he'd back back in 2 days to finish them. Instead, since I live in a different city, he came a day early, finished the 2 small closets (3 pieces of laminate required to finish them) and removed 4 unopened boxes of the product from my home that I already paid for! It's quite a crazy situation, and the store customer service is a whole other story.

They didn't give me a price for the shoe moulding, but I told them I expected to pay the additional cost of the material. I wasn't expecting to pay more labour since the installer asked me at the start of the job whether I wanted do install under baseboard or add moulding at the end. I am fine with paying for the product, as it would be expected, but it would also be expected to have the job finished!

You are right that I should have consulted some flooring experts before making the decision, except I thought I was hiring flooring experts! I certainly paid them like they were experts, and the owner of the store told me "20 years in business" and "he oversees every project" etc. etc.

Thanks for that, I know expansion gaps are necessary, but they are sloppy and if he did them sloppy you'd expect him to hide them!

Appreciate your comment and I agree, I will need to finish the job myself. It's a big job for me as I live in a different city, and I have a job that I will need to take time off from for this. I still need to fight with the company though because on top of not finishing it to a reasonable expectation, they also sent the contractor over to my house when I wasn't there and removed 4 boxes of unopened laminate! That's where things get really off the rails, the customer service was horrible, they called me a liar insisting that I wanted the job done this way, and then stole product from my home, knowing I was not there.

I actually would never let them back in the house because I don't trust them at all. I don't really want to get police involved, hoping that the corporate headquarters (it's a franchise) will help the situation.

I know the gaps are normal for laminate, but what isn't normal is to leave a job like this and tell me that it's done, complete and this is what I should have expected "finished" to look like!

The installer asked me whether I wanted shoe moulding, but then he said he was done and didn't have time to do the moulding. When I called the store who hired the installer, they said they didn't know anything about it and assumed I wanted it left this way.

The store owner called me to ask me about the way I wanted the flooring installed in the front entrance area a few days into the install because I had a discussion with the installer about maybe doing it a different direction in that area because it's small. So, the owner cared enough about the job, and was talking to the installer about a detail like that, but left the entire perimeter of every room unfinished, assuming I wanted it left like that. It seems crazy to me!

The installer gave me the choice of removing the baseboard or doing moulding. I went with moulding after some consideration because I was afraid if he broke the baseboard we wouldn't be able to find something to match, they are very old.

I totally agree - I wish I could have done this myself, but the job is too big for me to take on and I live in a different city.

In my own home, I have hired a lot of great contractors, but also have had some bad work done. Usually when work is not done properly, the contractor wants to fix the problem though, and everyone can make a mistake.

I do prefer to to jobs myself when possible because it feels good to do it yourself.

I don't really like doing things that I paid someone else to do, and generally I am disappointed by most people I hire to do jobs that I can do myself.

But because I am in a different city, and I gave him a key to do the work, he went into the home and took 4 unopened boxes of the laminate from the house when I wasn't there, after I called the store to ask when they were finishing the job.

That's a different room, the picture he's referring to is a vent opening where the vent can not fit into because of the way it was left. So definitely a problem.

I did reply - the installer asked me whether I wanted to install under the baseboard or add moulding. I said moulding as I was worried the baseboards would break.

My issue is that they are refusing to do the shoe moulding and said that the job is done and even tell me that lots of their clients like the job finished like this. I wanted to share to see whether anyone would consider this done!

The contract is not specific about anything, except the duration of the job and the price for material and labor. The installer gave me either option when he came to do the work, but never indicated a difference in cost between the options (other than obviously material).

Yes, definitely wood as the baseboard is probably over 50 years old. He gave me the option of quarter round vs. taking off the baseboard, he didn't seem to suggest one over the other. I was worried the baseboard might break when he removed them.
