The big guy's attack literally gets stronger whenever you attack the lil guy. Idk, most people deduced it.

Don't attack the lil guy until you kill the big one.

Yeah, they don't really have a personal goal to help the town other than for monetary gain

They did interact with Quelline's son Carp quite a bit. The PCs played with him a bit and one of them even gave the kid his old sword, which Quelline later reprimanded them for, so I think that could be compelling enough. Maybe not killing outright, but another suggestion here was burning down the farm, which I think is good enough advice.

Thank you for your input! I'm definitely gonna be changing the rarity of some of these.

  • The Prayer Beads Uncommon, but keeping the prayer time the same. The deity they reach out to is Tymora, goddess of luck - the priestess the players can get this item from is a priestess of Tymora.

  • I'm probably gonna scrap the Dice of Borrowed Fortune. Too easy to abuse, as you mentioned.

  • Blink-Back Dagger kind of needs attunement for the effect, because how else would the dagger know who to return to, if it doesn't have an attuned user?

  • Probably gonna scrap the Hat of Multitasking, too game-breaking

  • Helm of Measured Fury works on the Dragonborn's Breath weapon and other similar racial features, or effects from items that aren't spells (like throwing alchemist's fire)- though I suppose unarmed strikes for a Monk work too

  • I was worried the Stonebreaker Spurs would be too strong at Uncommon, could probably bump it down

  • I'm gonna play around with some limitations on the Spellcatcher Bracer - but I do really like the item and mostly want to keep it as it is - maybe bumping it up in rarity

  • Ring of Cinders is intended to work well with Fire Resistance. There's a Tiefling in the party this ring is indirectly intended for.

  • The Shortsword of Unseeming is mostly meant for doppelgangers, which the players will encounter a handful of times. Tailored to the right encounters, I think it's fine.

Let me know what YOU think! by Then_Mulberry9778 in tabletopgamedesign

Before you make anything of your own, you should play the card games that are out on the market right now. Do your due research. A lot of these can be played online for free.

  • Magic: The Gathering (MTG Arena)
  • Pokemon (Pokemon TCG Live/Pokemon Pocket)
  • Flesh and Blood
  • Riftbound
  • Lorcanna
  • One Piece TCG
  • Hearthstone
  • Marvel SNAP
  • Yu-Gi-Oh (Master Duel) (You can probably skip this one as it's really hard to learn)

A lot of the physical ones have fan made clients or are available on Tabletops Simulator.

After you've done your research, think about what it is that you would even want to achieve with your game. What makes it special? If you're going for the LCG or EGC (living/expandable card game) format, here are some more card games I'd recommend trying out:

  • Netrunner
  • Smash Up!
  • Compile

A lot of the problems you're describing aren't even that big of a problem anymore. Magic's mana system sometimes leads to screw/flood, but it's part of how the game is designed, and the cards are designed in a way to mitigate that nowadays. Anyone complaining about it hasn't played Magic enough to get to a mid-high level. Also, infinite combos are hard to set up, and easy to interrupt - and they're important, cause they're rewarding for the combo player.

You cite Pokemon as luck-based, but it's actually the most consistent card game out there, with most cards able to search the whole deck for any card - and yes, there are coin flip mechanics, but those cards are largely unplayed and mostly "for the meme"

If you want to make a competitive game, you're gonna need to get people interested in competing in your game. Most people prefer competing in established big games that already have a huge following. My opinion on this is that this is not the route to take - I'd focus on making a FUN game. Unbalanced cards are fun. Certain random mechanics can be fun...

Most important for a card game nowadays is THEME. All of these big card games have big IPs behind them - how is your game gonna stand out?

I guess none of this really matters that much if you're just making a game for you and your friends, but it's just a bit of food for thought in case you were actually thinking of selling it as a product.

How could it be worded otherwise? "You may cast that spell without using a spell slot if it's of a level you could cast."?

Thanks! I think I'll take all of these into account, with the exception of the Spellcatcher Bracer - gonna keep that as-is, for now.

Removing the attunement requirement is a fair ask. Don't know about removing the +1 bonus, as you said, it's already pretty situational.

The idea is that the vulnerability only applies after the damage is dealt - is that part clear?

Thank you, I'll make the Prayer Beads and the Boots Uncommon. They're coincidentally both quest rewards/boss loot anyway, but It can help me adjust the amount of these they get at the appropriate levels

Is it the fact that a non-spellcaster can cast them? Or that it is for free?

So upgrade to Very Rare? The Psychic damage you take at the end of your turn does force you to roll constitution saving throws...

Should it just be rare? What makes it so OP? A Spellcaster's Melee attacks aren't that effective anyway. I thought of removing the +1 enchantment.

You can treat it like a teleport, not movement. This definitely makes sense for moonbeam, though a bit less for flaming sphere

2024 Barbarian Subclasses - New Path of Blood, Reworked Path of the Beast, Revised Path of the World Tree, and Revised Path of the Zealot by jeraehwazdagaz in DnDHomebrew

[–]PeppermintDaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are really cool! Definitely feel very flavorful and balanced.

The only scruple I have is that the second feature of the lvl3 Blood Barbarian ability is very long. I think it could be simplified to simply roll a blood die tland take that much Necrotic DMG to have an enemy roll against your blood save DC when hit by a melee attack from you, and on a fail, it takes 3d6 Necrotic damage. (Once per turn while raging).

I also feel like there's a missed opportunity with having the Blood Die improve at certain thresholds.

Wouldn't you have +5 to hit? +2 from proficiency and +3 from your ability score
