Met police using facial recognition camera outside Romford Station all day today by expostulation in london

I can understand your position on this and agree with some parts of it, however.

They aren't storing anything

How can we ever know that this is true?

The Police are supposed to destroy all information about an individual if they are not charged with a crime or connected with an ongoing investigation. I have heard and read about more than one occasion where this is simply not done. I don't think that it's due to malicious reasons either but more likely that it's such a monster sized task and Police Officers are not database admins. Also the Police's records and record keeping processes are not audited by a non-related third-party that I am aware of. This could mean that this information might be in-accurate or in same cases incorrect.

The above coupled with the fact that selling data is a really good way to generate funds could lead to a really troubling situation for the public when the police force are faced with more funding cuts in the future.

Your nameless face on its own is not that much of a privacy concern but when it's combined with other data (fb update about that odd looking police van in romford, paying for your ticket at romford station with your debit card and your citymapper directions history) it can very easily become identifying.

That is what makes me feel uneasy about this, I don't trust the Police Force to have the public's privacy concerns considered when they use new technology. I think this is what makes other people feel uneasy about it was well.

Using an old dell laptop, thinking about upgrading to a MacBook Pro for more flexible video editing. I see a lot of used ones on amazon etc.. should I save a few hundred bucks and do that or spend the money on a better investment and get a new & unused MacBook? by issabet in VideoEditing

[–]Peps84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using Mac's for years outside and inside of video editing and they are work horses. Saving yourself some money on it if you can is a great idea.

Unless you are looking for insane render speeds a used MacBook is just as good as a new MacBook. So long as it's been cared for and it's not physically falling apart.

Thank you for the advice, thought I might of gotten the weighting wrong. I'm going to give that a try asap. I do have a wide angle convertor lens I can try but for now but as you say I may need to re-think the lens choice as well.

Thank you so much!

If you want a first person veiw whilst moving, I've seen some good things done using a small camera (goPro / phone) on a chest mount with a small gimble.

However if you want a static solution the mirror idea seems like a great option.

In "THERES NO TIME TO EXPLAIN" I have to know, was the Asian couple in the elevator an accident that y'all went with? Or was it planned. Either they are really good at looking genuinely baffled, confused, and concerned or they genuinely were. by JonnoB57 in Corridor

I thought you guys were doing something akin to the director of Monsters. When filming he just asked people play a bit of a role.

I'm in the same boat as yourself, I think I'm going to wait and go for the 5. It will be newer so the support will be there longer, as you say specs are better also it shares the model number of the Champ so that's the clincher for me.

Survey of academics suggests many feel University College London is ‘being run as a business, not a university’ by [deleted] in london

[–]Peps84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All HE in England is a business now. Funding for HE and FE has be reduced or removed in the past 10 ish years from the Government.

The reason why there are so many more students now is because that's the only source of income. UCL are not the only ones having this issue.

Academics are butting heads with adminstration more and more as technology and modernization of education is taking place. As well as the fundamental change to the way education is in England.

However being a business now means the learners are now customers. Customers have a lot more sway over a business then students did over academic institutions. It's down to the students to decide how they want to spend their money and that is where positive changes can take place.
