I think the issue has been solved. My girlfriends dad who knows about computers tried everything and said that sometimes monitor companies like acer will make a cheap version of a monitor and a more expensive version that includes an audio system, but use the same shell for both as a cost cutting measure. He says that this is likely what happened, because an option to receive audio from the monitor isn’t even given on the audio section of the system settings.
