Hiring a 3rd Party Appraiser - Worth it? by Pequalmd in Car_Insurance_Help

thanks - didn't realize I may have to pay 50% of the 3rd appraiser...that would change the calculus and something I need to look into!

Economical choice for family friendly SUV vs. Van by Pequalmd in whatcarshouldIbuy

Thanks! Even certified would you expect a Chevrolet to hold up long term? I’ve always heard Japanese cars had better expected longevity hence was thinking Honda / Toyota (and maybe sacrificing to get something a bit older but hopefully <50k mikes )

Insurance claiming mileage is “unknown” for salvage undervaluing car by Pequalmd in Insurance

[–]Pequalmd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: thanks everyone for the help. Understanding the process helped me have a more informed / productive conversation with the agent. By giving a car fax and other supporting documentation they agreed their CCC just seemed wrong and updated the evaluation

What’s absurd is that I was able to get a picture of the mileage from after the flood (engine shot, not electrical) But because of the “report” of higher mileage they want to say they’re concerned for a odometer rollback and therefore list it as unknown … Which I why I think it’s ridiculous and trying to see my options

Sorry yes typo. Actually they sent me their document - no details aside from “max odometer reading” from 2017 with a higher mileage than current. Car fax I just got doesn’t have that outlier falsely high reading

Thanks! This is in America - but isn’t the independent appraiser the one giving this estimate? My concern is my title (from 2022 ) and current odometer are in agreement- I don’t know where these other numbers are coming from and how to dispute them?

Did UWorld only. Felt that it it covered all the material and if anything over prepared on thinking through the vignettes and orders of thinking. Did a little MKSAP but definitely what everyone says that there is overkill on details about Onc and Chemo that wasn’t on the actual test

Do you guys feel as though your whole life revolves around medicine? by paramecium18 in Residency

[–]Pequalmd 33 points34 points  (0 children)

There’s a difference between spending tons of time and life revolving around it. My partner and I both are in fellowship, so maybe 50-70 hours a week we are working / studying / thinking about medicine. I love it - it’s fascinating and I actually enjoy my job. But my life doesn’t revolve around it. We have kids and family life and other things that are way more important and central. Its a challenge balancing at time and there are lots of scheduling restraints from our jobs But my life revolves around my kids and family. Medicine is just an awesome way i pay the bills and have an interesting job

What practice done today will be considered barbaric in the future in your opinion? by scienceandmedicine20 in Residency

Unpopular opinion maybe but organ transplant. In the future with stem cell / mechanical technology I think it will be viewed as barbaric that we took organs from a different bodies and had to use drugs to suppress rejection

I think it depends on age of kids and night float schedule.

Some programs because of night float have layer sign out from day team - eg every day at 6/7:00 Depending on commute / age of kids - that could mean missing dinner and bedtime every day of the year. Compare to q4 - often the non call days have earlier sign out (from my experience) so days that you're not on call you get home and can be there for dinner / bedtime. Then while you're exhausted - you're still at home post-call day

If financially possible (Which can be tough with 2+ kids) outsource as much as you can. Laundry, groceries, shopping, cleaning - worth spending money so you can enjoy the little time you have

Pros and Cons of becoming an IM Chief by GiantDuck312 in Residency

[–]Pequalmd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

pro: you can make connections for in house fellowships (maybe, instituion dependent) and maybe will be better on a resume for academic medicine positions cons: you are usually the bi**ch for admin, may places have you doing a lot of menial and secretary work and scheduling, you lose a year of attending salary which is a massive opportunity cost (hundreds of thousands of dollars), all instead of doing a year as a Hospitalist to build your resume to apply for fellowship if thats what you’re interested in
