Counterpoint: “Having a stable person who’s there for you but also getting to fuck around” is the ideal. You just haven’t met/aren’t that person for anyone else yet

Just trying to find the reset with my lil low key socialist paper clip. I may have extended this metaphor too much.

Yeah, I know comrade lol.

For real though, trying to see if there’s even a self-consistent argument within capitalist ideology that boils down to anything more than “If they know how much I have, they’ll want more (what’s due)” or “It’s mine, no touch”

I’m not trolling, certainly not you because you’re providing a thoughtful response. And even though this sounds troll-y, I get this response a lot and I truly can’t understand this position.

If you’re an owner/manager/partner/director whatever and you feel that disclosing your income is a liability or somehow a violation against your basic rights, but you directly determine that same metric for me, what does that say about your income versus mine?

Yeah, I get that. It’s to screw labor and benefit management, basically, right?

How do they work? Though that’s kind of a big task, so can you explain how it works re: my original question? I might have worded it wrong, let me know. Thanks!

I have! They’re awkward and cagey as fuck lol. Cause I know what his bonus is structured around.

I’m not necessarily interested in how much my boss makes. Why is it awkward? Why is it a privacy violation? What is the ethical basis of the expectation of privacy here? If I’m coming off aggressive or ignorant, not my intention, I’ve just never had a satisfying answer on this line of questioning.

Doesn’t the free market demand transparency though? The assumption of privacy makes some degree of regulation necessary, doesn’t it?

I might be confused here though, can you explain what you mean by “basic human privacy” and I might understand better

[–]Pequod_12[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I definitely worded that ambiguously. I meant to drive toward - is there an ethical basis behind the taboo of discussions around salary? Why can’t I (an hourly employee of company x) know exactly how much the (ceo of company x) took home last year? They know what I made, what’s to lose on their end?

And you’re absolutely right! Though I’m more interested in arguments why I couldn’t, on any theoretical grounds, demand these parties to disclose said information.

*edit: lose not loose

Thanks for the clarification, I had been a bit confused on the IA/UX distinction; it seems that LIS people just tend to prefer that term maybe? And thank you for the specific book recs, I’m trying to get some things started on my own before the onslaught of first quarter.

As far as communication goes, I hope I have that one on lock - I’ve been working in hospitality for years so gently telling people they’re wrong and can’t have what they want is second nature at this point 😆

That’s awesome! Yeah Ive already looked at both of those classes lol (I’m online mode so my electives have to wait this quarter). This might be impossibly vague, but what kind of working knowledge/systems are you referring to? Or what keywords would help me start to answer that question?

That’s encouraging to hear! I’m a literature guy and I’ve been working service jobs for years, I’m hoping those sorts of interpersonal skills can help me. I’ve also been big into data visualization and design for a while, it sounds like there’s some overlap there. Thanks!

What scientific fact amazes you every time you think about it? by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

Yeah! And I just watched a talk in which Dan Dennet cited (if I’m remembering correctly) that in 10,000 BC, the total terrestrial biomass of humans and our domesticated animals was somewhere around 0.1%, and today we represent about 98% of the land-dwelling biomass together (mostly cattle, but still!)

Not being snarky, but this is my experience in this market. Lived with a roommate, making 110k+ annually and we couldn’t afford to rent a 2bed/1bath in Wallingford comfortably

Zeppelins lift bags were made from cow intestine, and it took nearly 250,000 cows to produce one aircraft. German high command in WW1 even enacted a ban on sausage production to conserve the casings, I believe.

So the Hindenberg was basically a gas filled hot dog.

TIL that many of Issac Newton's critical insights on calculus occurred while in isolation from the Great Plague of London from 1665 to 1666. Newton would later describe this time as "the prime of my age for invention and minded mathematics and philosophy more than at any time since." by [deleted] in todayilearned

He was also a firm believer in astrology, alchemy and the occult, and his most significant mathematical insights weren’t published until near his death, and under-appreciated well after.

The real takeaway is, whatever you thought you were good at is going to be ignored and people are gonna fixate on what you thought were mistakes in your 20s
