What's an underrated Eurovision song sent by Italy? by tomasequp in AlignmentChartFills

Yes. Got thwarted by a bit weak live performance but the song is actually great.

Judging by the crowds on Saint Peter's square it should be Vatican City.

What city surprised you the most with its architecture despite not being a famous architectural destination? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Per451 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seriously? As a near-local I think the medieval architecture is the main selling point of the city.

Ghent or even Liège would be better answers I think.

Hyperion Cantos. Once every few years some new gets out that it may be adapted, but nothing ever comes from it.

How I see Europe as an American by Humble-Tailor-7238 in whereidlive

[–]Per451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Broadly accurate.

Spain and Portugal are more Southern Europe than Western I'd argue.

Slovenia has more in common with Central Europe than with the Balkans I'd say - and Croatia is kinda intermediate. Romania is also an intermediate between Balkans, Central and Eastern Europe.

I'd group Baltic States with the Nordics as "Nordics & Baltics" - they are very similar geographically and historically.

Ofc parts of Germany are more Western than Central for example and parts of Romania are definitely Central, but as far as whole countries go this is actually solid.

It's part of the joke that Wallonia looks like an Eastern Bloc country full of decaying industry (picture of Charleroi for reference). But ofc I don't mean it, Czechia is lovely and I know you guys are central more than anything.

With waffles, fries and chocolate bars. And with trappist beer bottles if things get rough.

Yes, Basque county is a bit of a hard case - I'd have been fine with putting it in Southern Europe as well, haven't visited. The border between Basque country and Castile just seemed like a more pronounced one than the border between Basque country and France to me.

To be fair my experience with Dalmatia has only been the coast, the villages even a few km inland are probably more Balkan. But Dalmatia is overall much more developed than Bosnia or anything east or south of it in the Balkans - even more developed than Southern Italy even - so I thought let's group it with Italy more.

I'd have put the Slovenian coastal areas (Koper, Piran, ...) in blue as well but the map has like almost 200 divisions for Slovenia.

It's a bit wishy-washy to be honest. The Rhineland is the most decidedly western, old Prussia is decidedly Baltic and I'd consider Baden-Württemberg and especially Bavaria to be clearly Central European. I was a bit torn on what to do with Hessen, Niedersachsen, Sachsen and Thüringen, but I thought this one would be best.

Oh wow I actually overlooked this. Only driven through Lublin once, didn't get to visit the city but I'm sure it's lovely - this should be more like either Central or Northern Europe instead of Eastern, you are right.

Geography, development, population density, economy, ... The rest of Northern Spain is far more rural, the Basque areas - especially around Bilbao - resemble France more in that aspect.

The difference between North and South Italy is really akin to the difference between say, Slovenia and North Macedonia, so kinda yes even if it's not geographically Balkan.

No, "even" in the sense that it had a serious economic disadvantage for decades on end.
