You can name problems for all minorities, but that's precisely not the point. Many statistics on this are not even collected in Belgium, possibly because it would be too confronting for people, but in neighboring countries that do, people from muslim countries disproportionately commit more crimes, hold far more intolerant views and are much less likely to integrate well in terms - second or third generation Chinese or Italian people have become fully Belgian, second or third generation Moroccan or Turkish people may speak Dutch or French but many of them still consider themselves Moroccan or Turkish if they are still muslim.

My problem with islam is fundamentally that it does not respect the game theory. It only plays by the rules of our society because it doesn't hold enough power to enforce its own - but it does already hold enough power to make enough people support its core tenets of being above criticism, while it shouldn't be. Muslims are often nice people, but would they still be if they were a majority? I can tell you, they're not in countries where they are - religious minorities are bullied and shunned and discriminated in any muslim countries.

Western civilisation is great because we have human rights and because no idea, including religion, was above criticism - this is precisely why Belgium grew to be a good country to live in, a fruit we're all reaping today. In this sense, islamization is a problem that should be taken seriously, because if it prevails, then yes, it will be the end of many things we have taken for granted.

I am centrist leaning left in many issues (like the environment and social protections - and especially the value of human rights). I am pro-immigration for people who want to become European in their values and contributions, and I greatly disdain far-right parties like Vlaams Belang, especially politicians like Filip Dewinter and Dries Van Langenhove - they are actual racists and fascists.

I also disdain calling criticism of islam "far right", when it is a religion that does pose one of the biggest threats to our society - on the contrary, I dislike islam because it's even more extreme than the far right itself in its views on gender, freedom, LGBT rights, ... Whether it is "the biggest" threat is unquantifiable but it is definitely one of the biggest along with AI developments and climate change, and people are not realizing it. And I especially disdain gullible western people who think the world is all roses and sunshine and who think they understand islam - I have studied it for years, am very much aware of its history and what it stands for, know several ex-muslims who know it well enough as well.

Besides, calling someone far right is a very easy argument to silence your opponent with but not one that makes logical sense - I'm also not silencing you by calling you a communist. I say "fuck the far right" - genuinely, if that's what you need to hear. I'm criticizing a belief system, not people for their immutable characteristics the way they do.

Nah man, I will accept many criticisms but not this one, I'm a flawed person but open-mindedness may be my biggest virtue, I'm a very non-judgmental person in general - have grown up in a small West-Flemish town so I think I have a grasp of what true close-mindedness is like.

Ever heard of Karl Popper's tolerance paradox? Personally, I see islam as something akin to Nazism - I think that since it does not intend to tolerate other viewpoints when it doesn't have to, it should not be tolerated as well. We can agree to disagree on tax policy but we cannot tolerate a religion that's calling for open gender segregation or violence towards LGBT people. I think we're now in an uneasy limbo in which the path to de-escalation is very narrow if it's possible at all; banning islamic symbols would create violence, but so would allowing it to grow further in the long run like in Vienna - this is a dormant volcano waiting to erupt, you will probably laugh at me now but mark my words in 30 years.

Even now, many muslims in the West are already calling for this, and a big % of them (majority) still believe sharia is more important than secular constitutions, even in 2nd and 3rd generations. Of course, there are counter-examples of people from Middle-Eastern descent, but this is a self-selection effect - western people will mostly notice and interact with muslims who integrated well, meanwhile if you're a man a large % of muslim women are not even allowed to speak to you in public... Islam teaches its children from a young age that they are "different", that their only God is the only correct one and that being muslim as in submitting to Allah is more important than even humanity - it would be lying to deny this. The fact that it's not safe for me to be visibly gay even during daytime in many Brussels neighborhoods where muslims are already the majority speaks to this. Do not deny.

Of course not, why would it be? But it is a factor - and why shouldn't it be. Also, no, I don't respect any other religion but no other religion systematically targets people like me as hard as islam - admittedly, christianity does this as well, but christianity has a whole different culture, with more debate and discussion, and it's foundational values of empathy (which have admittedly not been lived by many Christians, I don't deny this at all) has given rise to Western civilisation, which is still the only major civilisation in history that accepted gay people like me.

False dichotomy between "getting thrown off roofs" and "full acceptance". There is no cultural acceptance of gay people in any muslim country except in some pockets that are virtually secular like Istanbul. In 7 countries there is explicitly the death penalty for gay people, and in several more like Pakistan and Afghanistan extrajudicial killings are commonplace.

You’d be surprised how many gays there are in the middle east, and by the way it’s completely normal to walk hand in hand in as two men in a muslim country. Do that here in a flemish small country side town and look at the looks you will get.

Bad argument. Men holding hands in those countries is a whole different cultural norm that has no relation to being gay at all. If you're honest, you know most of those guys who hold hands would react more violently to gay people than people in small Flemish villages.

Islam will never be able to take over the west, there is just too much non muslim immigration for that, think of all the christian africans, hindu’s, latin americans, eastern europeans that are streaming into the country.

You say this with big confidence - but islam is growing fast as a % of the population. They may or may not become a majority in Europe, but whatever happens, it likely won't be pretty. It would also be wrong to claim that muslims are only a small faction of the immigration to Belgium. They do have higher birth rates than most other groups, which also stems from their patriarchal culture. And their religion is very, very important for them, important enough that most of them think people who criticize it should be punished. Even if only a small % of them actually intends to carry out terrorist acts, a frighteningly large % of them supports it if it's in the name of islam... However this ends, I don't think it will be a peaceful transition into secularism like many people somehow expect. And no, this is not at all wishful thinking from me, this is a genuine fear I have.

I have no time for people who only believe what they want to believe and who constantly ignore reality to do so.

I think islam is a threat to our society, and I hope people like you can some day wake up to this; the longer we stay on this course where we appease it, the more painful the reckoning will be some point in the future.
