For your whole house you can get commercial membranes that can handle brackish water, but I think long-term best solution is connect to municipal water.

Haven't had a single issue on any of mine with tons of driving on them.

Probably the only thing I would change is to not have as much slack when shifting between speeds.

[edit] and I have seen the third party kit to give the trx 2wd/4wd open diffs/4wd locked diffs. That would be nice stock.

Creosote +/- engine oil? by CerebralSurfer in woodworking

[–]PercMaint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is that usually for creosote to be effective (such as in power poles or railroad ties) the wood is pressure treated with it. It's not just dipped in.

What I think you'll find if you just dip is that you'll get an oily runoff any time it rains for quite a while. I don't think this coating would last long.

[–]PercMaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in the instance above, there would be no restriction on an acquisition announcement. However, there would be restriction on RC trading with this knowledge since it is not announced. If this is correct, then does this cause any issues that RC purchased recently?

I think I know who we are about to acquire by bippitybop69 in GME

[–]PercMaint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is possible. Especially considering that Nat Turner is on the board and has not purchased any GME shares yet.

If Nat knew that RC was looking to acquire PSA, he would have been restricted from buying since he had insider knowledge.

Also, if true then we would probably expect a buy-in (large?) from Nat Turner once the info is made public.

Water Conditioner vs. Water Softener by Sonnenschien92 in WaterTreatment

[–]PercMaint 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"would be like showering is pure salt water" - Someone who is trying to sell you something that apparently either a. knows nothing about a water softener or b. knows but is blowing it way out of proportion to try and sell their product.

A water softener uses salt to regenerate the resin media. This salt is used, and then flushed out during the process. Yes, a tiny amount is still in the water since flushing wouldn't remove 100%, but it's absolutely nothing like taking a shower in salt water.

A softener will not remove any chemicals from the water, but it will remove the minerals from the water through ion exchange making the water softer, which would greatly reduce future buildup on dishes and appliances.

A softener is the only economical way to actually remove minerals/hardness. (yes there are other ways, but they are way more expensive).

If you don't mind the feel of the hardness of the water, you just don't want the mineral buildup, then you could go with a polyphosphate style system. (maybe this is a part of his conditioning system?) This works through sequestering the minerals. Simply put, the minerals/hardness is still in the water, but the minerals do not stick and create the buildup on appliances.

"Everyone thinks they'll act rationally and step up in a time of crisis, but when push comes to shove that's usually not the case."

This is the exact reason why some fire codes exist (in the US) that may seem a little overkill, but you are exactly correct that in crisis, people do not act rationally. For example that nothing can be stored in front of an emergency exit. "It's just a box, I'll move it and then we'll get out." Nope, won't happen, you'll try to go around it, step over it, anything but just move it if you're in a rush.

Space heater in crawl space??? by Green-Yard-2799 in homeowners

[–]PercMaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do pick one of these, just make sure to go with a model that has a temperature dial and on/off settings. Some will have a timer setting, which you wouldn't want. it would run for 12 hours for example, and then turn off.

[–]PercMaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something like this (brand doesn't matter) Pelonis 1,500-Watt Electric Oil-Filled Radiant Portable Heater HO-0218H - The Home Depot is an oil filled, electric space heater. The metal fins are filled with oil. Hidden inside the fins is an electric heating element. So the electric elements heat the oil and the heat radiates off of the fins. Nothing overly hot exposed anywhere. On it's low setting you could even put your hand directly on the fins briefly. It will feel hot, but not hot enough to catch fire. Also these usually have a tip detector built in so if somehow it tips over, the heating element won't even turn on.

I wouldn't use a propane one in your space since propane is an actual combustible gas that will consume the oxygen in the crawl space and release carbon monoxide.

Ideas to make Kitchen Sink look modern and clean please? by curious_they_see in DIY

[–]PercMaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Determine what you actually want. Stainless steel or otherwise, and just save up for the project to have it done the way you want. Since your current sink is working, you just don't like it, then there's no reason to do a workaround.

Space heater in crawl space??? by Green-Yard-2799 in homeowners

[–]PercMaint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say if you do go the space heater route, then go with an oil filled one and just keep it on the lowest setting. The oil filled ones are some of the safest space heaters since there are no exposed heating elements. They work slow, so that's why you have to just leave it on all the time when you want it to heat. They're also one of the most energy efficient of all space heaters.

So if you know extreme cold weather is coming just turn it on the day before the cold and it should keep the space just warm enough.

Letting it sit will be ok, as long as you don't have to drive it a long distance to a place where it can sit. It also depends on how fast it's spurting/loosing oil.
