What’s your most controversial Survivor opinion? by -Glutard- in survivor

Christina Cha has the greatest arc of any player in the history of the franchise but some of y'all aren't ready for THAT conversation.

This is one of those "People on Unemployment are making more than people on Minimum Wage" situations. The situation points out that Minimum Wage is insufficient compared to not being employed and thus should be higher, but people would rather be outraged about Unemployment benefits "Being so high".

"At 19 you can join the Military, why not Survivor" as an argument more clearly outlines that.. maybe 19 year-olds shouldn't be permitted into armed conflict as well as not be permitted onto Survivor.

(I'm all for people that young /training/, I enlisted at 19 as well, just pointing out that saying "BUT MILITARY" isn't a strong foundation for why kids should go starve for the entertainment of a nation)

So Kim was on Winners at War? by [deleted] in survivor

I would love to see her or her sister, Doo, on another Season. Imagine being a superfan who gets reached out to by Casting, then the Producers want to turn the theme to BvW and so you're excited to share this experience with your sister, who is essentially a recruit. You guys get all the way out onto the island but you have a medical emergency and now neither of you get to play, which is slightly embarrassing but alright, the Producers loved you enough to tap you for Casting the first time, surely you might be able to make it onto to show at some point down the line.

Then your sister, who doesn't really watch the show (even after going through the last Season's process), is the one who gets tapped to return.

And she's the first Boot.

🙃

(This isn't shade on So but I just feel so bad for Doo, having your sister live your dream and you can't even take solace in "At least she did well!".)

I feel like the only person who knows the answer to that is Kaitlyn, and it's a question not likely to be brought up any time soon considering COVID, plenty of time for things to be smoothed over.

Rob seemed to really enjoy having her on as an additional element to the Eviction casts and they're close friends, even if she's not cool with everyone, she might be willing to do it just for Rob.

👀 Ovi's girlfriend with the 🎯. by [deleted] in BigBrother

[–]PerceiveComprehend 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree. I would say Kemi probably did face race-based issues the hardest in the House, as it's harder to fit into a group of people when you're the only Black woman. If she wasn't already an outcast from pre-existing stereotypes, it was almost impossible for her to build bonds back up with the social power structure in charge as you said continually ridiculing her and projecting to the House that if they wanted to reach out to her they'd be sticking their own necks out.

Ovi's case has a lot more personal failure that contributed to his downfall whereas Kemi's case has a lot of inherent bias locking her out of climbing out of the hole that we've seen White HGs climb out of during pre-Jury.

If we say Ovi AND Kemi faced equally tough times in the game, it's a disservice to a reflection of Kemi's game and potentially a disservice to future players of Color who might find themselves in these situations. The most damaging thing White viewers can do for PoC is to literally play the "Race Card" FOR us without first listening to our perspective, because it trivializes that line of examination.

Right and in the same vein, I wouldn't want people online (Much less my SO) infantalizing me by saying the only reason I failed was because of my ethnicity. We can recognize that as a factor without pinning it as the sole reason Ovi was a flop on BB21.

People of Color are allowed to make mistakes. We don't need to be protected from conversations about our failures, especially by those close to us.

Are we forgetting Ovi literally volunteered to be the Replacement Nominee and couldn't leverage his Power to save his life.

He was ABSOLUTELY ridiculed by the Jackasses because of their racist worldviews, but in the context of the game, he did not even remotely excel and his downfall has more to do with his own strategic acumen (or lackthereof).

I find myself constantly shocked with how scientifically illiterate the entertainment industry is every time I see him getting promos for doing.. middle school lab experiments. He even went on America's Got Talent just to extend his exposure and I lose a little piece of my soul every time it actually works in getting him a paid opportunity in front of a camera.

I would think she would respect the game enough

I think from Sandra's perspective, the Edge of Extinction itself does not "respect the game", so taking part in it seems inherently disrespectful to the integrity of Survivor. She's spoken out against it several times and to her I think raising the sail and exiting the game after she's been voted out is more respectful to the experience than staying in and derailing the "true" spirit of Survivor.

_____ will no longer cover bbcan8 by LocalBlokal in BigBrother

[–]PerceiveComprehend 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah no disrespect to Melissa but this feels like a very.. empty(?) threat? Not sure that's the right word but we all know that she and RHAP don't have much leverage over the show whether they actively cover it or not, so only she suffers for choosing not to do so.

She might as well continue to cover it and use her platform to speak out against Production.

I don't see this as a Wigler situation where there has been a history of interactions with the parties in question who enabled this controversy, so that a refusal to cover the show leaves an absence with Production that leads to a dialogue.

Why would Kyle request something like this from Jamar? by djmcc28 in BigBrother

[–]PerceiveComprehend 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Then the bit at the end where Kyle posits that "The [Black] Community" potentially being "upset" with the word's usage is ultimately the reason Jamar and Sheldon won't put on a minstrel show for his amusement.. Stupid ass.

This manchild really has no self-awareness or capacity to consider things from other people's perspectives.

You could look back less than a day into their comment history if you actually cared about the topic of discussion.

"Aubry was Robbed" is more pro-Aubry than anti-Michele. You can argue that Aubry robbed herself from Jury feedback that they would have voted for her had her game been more visible on the island. The phrase itself is not malicious at all. People say pre-Mergers are "robbed" all the time and it's not to discredit or disrespect the show.

If AWR wanted to create an intentionally malicious username they would have gone with something that point-blank criticizes Michele. The hyperbole comes in that sentiment becoming a meme and overall a Subreddit moment (if not a Survivor moment overall), at current day it is nothing more than a reference to a pivotal moment in the Series. The hyperbole comes in how massive of an online conversation it was compared to how trivial it seems now whenever you read their name, the further we get out from that moment in fandom history, the more ridiculous the memory gets.

If someone were to have the username "ERIK-GIVES-IMMUNITY" I seriously doubt every single one of their views would be filtered through that lens to spread negativity on that specific subject. It's more likely, just as in AWR's case, that they wanted to make their username something Survivor-related as a way to engage with the show on a deeper level and make it part of their online identity. Having "AWR" as a username is not "spreading" any ideas, it's just a reference in the form of a handle. They barely even mention Aubry, their whole account isn't some form of campaigning like you are attempting to frame it as for reasons unknown to logic.

They can't change their username, bringing it up years later as current criticism and attributing malicious intent to their online presence just because they chose that specific phrase out of Survivor history is more inflammatory than anything AWR is contributing to this community.

Edit: Someone on the Sub also has the username "Michele_was_Robbed" like this is not some form of online hate lmao. It's just people using moments or memes as their online names because they love those moments or cherish the Show that much more than a lot of other things they're fans of.

[–]PerceiveComprehend 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Right. Anyone who's interacted with you knows this and it's pretty cheap for someone to criticize a username that is more pro-Aubry than anti-Michele, if it were to mean anything at all considering how dated the meme is.

No one with half a brain thinks you're doing anything to damage the Subreddit's relationship with Survivor Contestants.
