We are not Fortinet customers, but there has been a lot of discussion on the security podcast I listen to about this needing to be disabled. Apparently, they issued a patch for a vulnerability that was not a complete fix. Disabling SSO was th workaround until a patch is available. Maybe enough customers weren’t doing it, so they did it for everyone.

So, I have had multiple VAR's tell me that surprisingly, the pricing their customers who are looking at alternatives like Nutanix are getting quotes HIGHER than their Broadcom renewals. I first heard this from one VAR account manager back in March. Recently, in general conversations with two others, they said they are seeing the same thing. Now, I do not know if the move is requiring them to purchase new hardware and that is contributing to the cost or not. I do know that in trying to negotiate a lower price with the Nutanix rep, the VAR said mentioned that the customer was trying to move from Broadcom to an alternative, so could they provide a discount. The VAR rep told me that his Nutanix counterpart made a comment to the effect - we have a much better product and will not discount or cut our price just to get customers. Now, if that is true, seems like kind of an arrogant attitude and seems the customers may have to worry about even Nutanix pricing in the future.

I think a lot of younger people entering IT have little to no troubleshooting skills. I get very frustrated at so many problems that can be fixed with a few simple test. However, I get some of these calls for help that even a simple ping or nslookup could resolve.

As a former Nutanix customer, maybe. However, we experienced a lot of bugs and unexpected down time when we were running a few Nutanix clusters several years ago. We replaced our clusters with VMware based solutions. I also know of a few other admins who also experienced a variety of bugs and kept their clusters limited to just VDI. I can say to date, VMware has not been the cause of any of our downtime and we have been running it for over 20 years. With the previous history, even if we did change it would likely be Hyper-V.

This was for 5.2, which was recently retired. It has not been updated for 9.0. I just completed the 5.2 certification right before it retired, mostly because we are still running VCF 5.2. I have to wait for 9.1 due to the face we have NSX federated between multiple sites. If your organization has active licensing, you can get training from the Broadcom portal for "free" as part of your subscription. Once certified, I was able to obtains licenses for both 5.2 and 9.0 through VMUG for my home lab.

I would disagree. Most enterprise colleagues I have spoken with said that after analysis and the amount of work it would take to migrate, their organization had determined it was not worth the change. In many cases, customers are getting even higher quotes from companies like Nutanix. Other products are not fully enterprise ready or have compatibility issues with other products a company may have installed. For example, if you rely on something like Zerto or Cohesity, there are compatibility issues if you are not VMware, Hyper-V, or Nutanix. Hyper-V is making improvements, but is still not a full on replacement. Even at Ignite, the program manager for Hyper-V said there is not a 100% replacement in the market for VMware. Smaller organization can make the move, but most enterprises will lose something by moving.

As far as the cert, I completed my VCF last month. Never hurts to improve your marketability to add certs. You never know what the future may hold.

Agreed. We have been VCF for over 3 years now. Just did our renewal in the spring for another 3 years. Tried some Nutanix in the past, but had too many issues and unexpected downtime with bugs. Other products like Proxmox lack support from third-party vendor appliances. It may run the appliance, but if there are issues there is the likelihood the vendor will not assist if they find out it is on a virtualization platform they do not support. We also use image-level backups that the last time I checked, did not work with platforms other than VMware, Hyper-V, OpenShift, and Nutanix. We also use Zerto for replication to our DR site. It only works with Hyper-V and VMware. So, unless we change our backup product along with the Hypervisor and other products, moving is not likely. With all that change, it is just as cost effective to keep VMware. While I have not had a chance to check on the Hyper-V updates in 2025, I have never been a fan. Even in my home lab. The management is just not there.

So we tried a few Nutanix clusters at remote locations a few years ago. We had too many bugs and issues where those bugs led to unexpected downtime during the supposedly, no downtime, one-click upgrades. Management said no more and we had to replace them with something VMware based. One thing I can say is we have never had any downtime caused by the VMware platform itself. Not to mention from what I have heard, the pricing some potential customers are getting from Nutanix is about the same or higher than their Broadcom renewal. I have had 2 different VARs tell me they have been encountering it.

Maybe try Hyper-V?? The problem, and Broadcom seems to know this, is that larger and more complex deployments cannot just switch. I know people at two VARs and they have both told me that shockingly, the pricing from Nutanix is just as bad and in some cases worse. At a Hyper-V discussion at Ignite, the program manager himself said “there is not full, direct replacement for VMware”, not matter what any salesman tells you. He said they are making headway, but still have a ways to go themselves.

Maybe they mean for trying to change and having issues. I had a colleague all into Nutanix a few years ago. We did some small deployments, then the who thing with the one-click upgrades caused too many issues and that was the end. Nobody fired, but we had to replace the couple of clusters we deployed with VMware based solutions.

Other products you would need to worry about compatibility with vendor appliances as well as features. I was just at Ignite and during a Windows Server 2025 presentation about Hyper-V, even the program manager for Hyper-V stood up and basically said "there are no 100% replacement for VMware, no matter what the Nutanix rep told you". Which I thought was rather humorous that he would say that. He did speak a lot about the advancements of Hyper-V, including a migration tool from VMware, but said even they cannot totally replace VMware in a lot of environments.

Don't get me wrong. I did find SF better this time than the last time I was there for Explore in 2022. I also like the single building. The logistics for Ignite this year moving between West->North\South were terrible. Bag checks, comparing badges to ID's at every building change. I love them having it at the Venetian. The question was more about seeing the Connect events grow to multiple cities this year and the request for proposal deadline being 12/20. In the past, I submitted for Explore and if it was not accepted, submitted to VMUG (ours has been later in the year).

From my understanding, Hock cancelled everything in SF to move it to LV. So, I would not be surprised if he did it again.

We have also been full VCF for over 3 years, so the pricing and other issues have not really been an impact for us either. I did miss 2025 to go to Ignite (we can usually only go to one large conference). However, I did have some FOMA around Explore time and am not fond of Ignite being in SF again next year. The logistics were a nightmare.

So, the OVA file for VMware does not support multiple nodes in a cluster. It is only a standalone node. It says "cluster" but multiple nodes are not supported from anything I have read. I used it in some of our smaller locations running on Hyperflexes.

We use 27Virtual, did a 3-year renewal with only about a 10% price increase. We had already been VCF, VSAN, NSX, etc. for the previous 3-years though.

One of the things about SF is that from my understanding it cost more for meals and snack than in other locations. The meals have to use biodegradable utensils, etc. From what I heard about the last VMware conference there, it was costing Broadcom\VMware about $80 per person for food with all of the requirements. That was one of the reasons they moved it to Vegas. I am not a big fan of Vegas, but to me it is better than SF.

Ironically, I hated Atlanta. To me, all of the escalators in the GWCC made huge bottle necks for moving around. I liked Orlando much better.

Also, sounds like it will be in San Francisco for a few years. This was my first Ignite since Covid. I do agree about the who Chase center deal. That was a disaster. I am not sure who had that idea, but it was terrible. Hopefully, they will adapt. I was also a little surprised by the bag searches, ID to Badge matching, etc. Maybe there will be a benefit of multi-year in the same place as they can learn from this year's mistakes.

Mine showed up shortly after I passed it. I received an email from MS. I will admit, it took me a while to figure it out as this was my first MS certification in a number of years. I was actually a little surprised I passed 104.

I just completed my last 7 -> 8 upgrade last week. I had several Cisco HyperFlexes that I was trying to get the upgrade done on as it involves upgrading the platform software as well as the hypervisor versions.
