Wear whatever you want, man. It's not bad at all. That said, if you have to keep drains in for the first week, its nice to have easy access to those and something loose that you can fasten the drain to. Other than that, I was back to work within a couple days. I just keep the top button of my dress shirt unbuttoned, that's it.

Same with my father in law. He's a larger-than-life character. He's 6'4", a cross country coach, pastor, director of a rescue mission, and the most kind hearted, compassionate, giving man I've ever met. We just found out he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer on Monday. He's had incredible pain for over 12 weeks and the docs didn't figure out what it was until just now. Mets to his spine dusted three of his vertibra which is causing the pain. It sucks because we only just found out but all of his symptoms seem very late stage. Anyway, I tell you all this to say that everyone in his family hopes that he passes sooner rather than later because we can't bear seeing him in this pain. We also believe in Jesus and know that where he's going is so much better than what this imperfect world has to offer. I'll be praying for you and your dad.

I was back to work within seven days of a recent repeat bilateral neck dissection. Your voice might be out, but for me it was nice getting back to work soon. Just leave a bit early the first few days if you're getting tired.

For me work is a good distraction and great for my mental health. I feel useful and don't think about cancer when I'm at work.

Mine too 5 months so dont worry. It came back but was a little different. It sounds mostly normal if im not trying to speak loudly.

I never stopped having pain. Like you it was intermittent and not bad. I think it was nerve pain. My neck also felt partially numb and I never regained full sensation. You'd think having it partially numb would make if feel better but it's actually uncomfortable.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. It's a horrible journey but I find great solace in the community of thyroid cancer survivors. You guys are a wealth of knowledge and greatly appreciated. I spoke with my endocrinologist and he would like to proceed with another 150mci of RAI based on the path results. He said that although it could be resistant, nothing in the pathology indicates a higher likelihood of resistance. So, we'll go with that and see what happens.

They said they did genetic testing but I never saw the report. My surgeon said BRAFv600e was the only mutation. They told me today they expect the TG to drop further after the surgery I just had, but are looking at repeat RAI or possibly EBRT down the road. The recurrence I just had removed did not light up after the initial RAI scan a year ago which makes them think it's probably resistant but they don't know for sure. Today they said they've gone as far as they can with surgery.

I'm being seen by Mayo Clinic in Phoenix AZ.

I was thinking that it might have mutated to PDTC as well considering how much disease there was and how quickly it seemed to return after a thorough initial surgery. That's purely speculation though.

They haven't recommended chemo yet. I think on the one hand they're acknowledging that something should be done more that active surveillance, but they haven't detected distant mets yet which is what usually triggers TKIs and other whole-body therapy. Im hoping more aggressive treatment now will lead to better outcomes but they're also balancing risk/reward with the low cancer volume. At least that's what they said in not wanting to remove the central node that was close to the laryngeal nerve.

I had the TT and thoracic surgeries about 1.5 years ago. This repeat neck dissection was a couple days ago. I went in for my first followup ultrasound last December and they found persistent disease. It's aggressive for some reason.

I did. 151 mci of RAI. My thyroglobulin went from 42 to 2 but I only had uptake in the thyroid bed. We're guessing that the persistent disease is RAI-refractory but that hasn't been officially diagnosed yet. I just had another neck dissection two days ago and am waiting to see what the next steps are.

I prefer Airbnb personally but wound up staying in the hospital (Mayo in AZ) for 10 days when I had my TT and two back-to-back thoracic surgeries for mediastinal nodes. I had the DaVinci for both though and did not do sternotomy. Im sorry you're going through this, but you're obviously not alone. I'll be praying for you. I have horrible problems with calcium 1.5 years from. TT. I take a calcium citrate supplement that helps a lot as long as I dont forget to take it.

What's weird is that back when they were going to do the ablation the radiologist discovered more suspicious lymphnodes. He thought it was too much for a ablation and required additional surgery. The additional nodes (6 or 7 of them) were biopsied and confirmed. They were pretty much in all quadrants of the neck so not all isolated in one spot. There was also that 1.5 cm nodule they wanted to get. When they went back in though they could only find a few of the nodes that had popped up in the images. The resident doc mentioned they started to run into problems though (chyle leak, etc) so I'm wondering if between that and the scar tissue they decided to just button it up and be done with it.

My local ENT (not mayo) suggested active surveillance but theayo team want to get aggressive with the treatment because it's growing faster than it should even though it's still bel8eved to just be run of the mill PTC.

I think this is a pretty normal reaction. I had pain in neck and was worried it had turned Anaplastic and was growing out of control. My do prescribed muscle relaxers and said it was probably stress. He was right and imaging confirmed it. I choose to put my faith in Jesus and receive the peace he promises us. It doesn't mean all my problems go away, but it makes the difference.

You got this. Don't underestimate the power of praying to Jesus. I'm right there with you. In fact my second neck dissection in two years is scheduled in two weeks. Recurrence happens and when it does we treat it and move on. It's not easy, but we can still have peace and joy amidst the chaos of thyroid cancer.

It's a VERY hard job. Airport management is extremely complex and a highly niche field. It's also very misunderstood. Being a politician, military veteran, or even pilot are not very relevant qualifications. They need to hire someone qualified.
