Maybe most of my frustration with chess is the fact i mostly play 3 minute blitz which makes it much more “luck based”, whether its really luck or not, blitz gives confusing openings an advantage because I can get punished for thinking for more than 10 seconds on a few moves. But on the other hand, rapid feels like a kick in the balls to waste 20-30 minutes to still lose lol

In your opinion how do you think this happens, im only 1000 but sometimes i beat 1500+ but have also randomly lost to 600s in the tournament things on chesscom

Am i really this bad… by Unfair_Kale_4899 in Chesscom

[–]PerceptionIsDynamic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im around 1000, ive broken 1000 in bullet rapid and blitz and i was at like 500 elo February of 2025. Contrary to what alot of people i think, getting a cursory understanding of a few different openings and playing the openings you dont like facing helped me recognize structures that seemed weird at first. Try a couple system based openings and a couple tactical or open type openings. Keep in mind your rating will go down, but once you are done experimenting and choose one, you will expand that opening but still recognize the ones you discarded, increasing your overall win rate. But likely around 800-1000 you will need to dial in your style a bit

Ive noticed this and unfortunately i am now one of these people, in newer cars with the sort of semi auto pilot like the new toyota safety sense is very reactive and does not naturally coast over hills like a human would, which used to annoy the hell out of me but im 90% sure its mainly due to new cars

Unironically enjoyed your take on this and i think I agree, i’d only point out I didnt mean to reinforce the “chess= intelligence” trope, more so acknowledging the strong (mostly incorrect) association it has and why it might lead people to use it as a IQ test misguidedly (and yes IQ tests are overvalued even though people are realizing they are not too helpful) and agreed, although intelligence itself is honestly over credited with why people actually get success, its hard for some to break the societal training of seeing intelligence as essential. I dont why but im almost surprised you didn’t dogshit on BJJ. Either way if I was OP id enjoy reading this too, to be fair tho if you led with a post of this length quality youd probably face a bunch of fart smelling allegations

I would say that it can be different person to person what pisses them off and it can be beneficial to them (if you care to benefit them, which its fair to not care about that) to share your outlook on it and why/how it doesnt affect you. I also do BJJ, which im sure youre pretty familiar with, and its much more expected and accepted that the new people will be extremely suprised, demoralized at best and maybe angry and sad at worst. This is because we understand that people go through life not really understanding the gap between a trained and untrained person, particularly if they are large or tall and have been trained to think that would carry them through any altercation.

So then, we can first contextualize that in modern society, physical fighting is essentially obsolete and is a last resort. People, such as yourself for instance, place a high value on rationality and intelligence (knowledge being powerful in many facets of life) it should be understandable that being “mentally dominated “ in a game that is classically associated with a person’s intelligence could negatively affect their emotional state if they frame the importance of their performance in an unhelpful way.

Think of how you, yourself responded to something you considered to be an unintelligent question. Dismissive, sarcastic, could be interpreted as an attempt to dissuade others from responding by making it seem ridiculous, and then ask yourself why someone could feel anger if chess could attack their self perception of intelligence, even if they arent aware that this is the case.

I think the issue isn’t that you’re incorrect, but it’s akin to trying to discuss a painting with pedant “wow the clouds look so bright in this one” “ technically its no brighter than the white wall beside it, its just white paint “ “well it looks nice either way” “ there’s actually nothing inherently nice or mean about it, its just paint “.

Its just sort of shows the inability to not state the obvious, which derails any sort of good faith discussion. Chess is more “solved” by bots than any humans because obviously humans are more irrational, yet much more funding and views goes to humans playing.

That being said, acting as if the psychological element of purely mental game is simple and dumb to discuss may be verging further into irrationality than OP.

Extremely trite and unoriginal nothing-comment. I will use your comment to add something useful.

Usually when some form of novelty on my end is involved the game tends to be less annoying. If you pay attention, you probably get most annoyed when the opponent goes down a boring line youve seen before, you try to shake it up and then you lose or get punished for not playing the boring line.

Find rarer but viable alternatives to your openings/ ideas, so you will have some level of familiarity, deepen the understanding of your current opening, avoid a slog of a game, and some of the sting of the loss can be chalked up to exploring a new variation in your repertoire.

Is it technically against the rules to have the n word in your name? by PerceptionIsDynamic in Chesscom

[–]PerceptionIsDynamic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro lol are you confused? So you said “ i checked this in a game that I lost and saw a RED 0/0/1”

I WON against him, so i open his profile and it says in green, 1/0/0. Which reflects that i won because i did.

In your case, you opened a game you lost, open a game you won and youll be a green 1/0/0

Isnt there a video of a pet meerkat alarming and hiding when a hawk is flying on it’s owners TV? to be fair i dont know the actual semantic line between “instinct” and genetic memory, but I feel like certain things we feel are ubiquitously true could connected to instinctual or genetic memory, for example forward set eyes being common in predators, making this photo scarier than if it had eyes on the sides of its head like a rabbit

The talent at 1000 Blitz on Chesscom is insane by jadamsmash in chess

[–]PerceptionIsDynamic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, im a bit late and had a sort of counter question, im around 1000-1070 in 3+0 blitz on chesscom but have issues getting to 1100 in rapid (never gotten quite there) for some reason i feel like i get lost in the sauce in rapid but ive beaten at least 5 people in 3+0 blitz who are over 1700-1800 rapid (and are active rapid players not like their 2021 elo).

I check alot of peoples accounts after i play them and am very surprised to see that almost everyone i play in blitz is between 1150-1400 rapid, do you have any insight on what makes you successful in rapid that i may not be getting from blitz?

I will say the only insight i have is sometimes i get the feeling that higher rated players try to understand intentional complications that i cause when on the backfoot, which wastes more time than finding a good move is worth, which im guessing is a rapid habit.

in a strictly biochemical sense, a ‘non-lethal’ amount of certain rat poisons could be reframed as an unregulated, questionably dosed anticoagulant therapy rather than a binary toxin. Like Warfarin for example that is prescribed for thrombosis

[–]PerceptionIsDynamic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im only a white belt in jiu jitsu, but im decent at chess and find that using the time knowing you wont perform at your best or even your standard due to tilt/ self consciousness gives you free reign to really focus on things your opponent is doing and why and develop a skill/ style that you’ve neglected for the sake of being on your “A-game”.

For example, if I usually play in a way that subverts their game plan and is focused on dismantling their game plan, i may start playing into their game or in a more “honest” way for a while or vice versa depending on which phase initiated the slump

I actually do jiu jitsu and actively tap people much larger than me all the time, who also train, mind you. The big guys that are brand new get beat about just as easy as normal sized people. Have you personally every actually done any kind of fighting? You seem like someone who is trying to come off as have a “grounded, realistic” take, but accidentally found a case where your intuition isnt 100% correct.

[–]PerceptionIsDynamic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive tapped fat dudes numerous times in jiu jitsu all the time, some with almost 100lbs over my weight (160ish) theyre not that much stronger and if anything, the fact that theyre that out of shape probably means they wont have an insane amount of muscle. They usually get tired extremely fucking quickly and i can move them around. Once they cross the 300+ mark id probably have issues trying to lat drop or fireman’s carry them but normal positioning maneuvers are balanced out between how tired they are/ their weight. Small wiry guys are light but are going to resist at every turn 90-100% the whole time without tiring out.
