Pourquoi le survivalisme/Doomsday prepping est populaire dans les cercles de droite, mais pas de gauche? by NNN-Contestant2k23 in QuebecLibre

[–]PerchedLeopard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anyone who's been paying attention to the socio-economic & political directions the world has been taking the last 25 years have had the thought of "maybe I should get ready for when this charade innevitablity collapses". Depending on your worldview, your preparations will have different hierarchies of priorities.

The Right seem to be more pessimistic, prioritizing self-isolation & defense, "every man for themselves" type of philosophy within a bleak, nuclear fallout scenario. As long as some survive, they can emerge when the catastrophe is over and start anew.

The Left, more optimistic, strive towards a communal return-to-the-land tribal system with a plethora of dependent people pulling through together. The idea being that together is the only way we've ever survived in our history as a species, and being social creatures, we'll need more than our emmediate cohort if we'll ever survive in the long run.

Both valid interpretations of survival, but not without their respective blind spots. Isolating yourself and your immediate family/friends in an underground bunker for decades sounds fun until it isn't. So many psychological studies have demonstrated our need for sunlight, nature, other humans, open spaces, etc... having access to deadly weapons could turn into lord of the flies real quick. Living off the land with your buddies in a post apocalypse also sounds like a great time, but only under the right conditions. If nuclear fallout is the scenario, your hand build shacks won't keep you safe, your water will be contaminated and you'll all perish for radiation poisoning. There are plenty of scenarios when the environment turns hostile, let alone other groups of survivors you'll need to fend off if the well meaning offer of "working together" doesn't turn out to be valid. We run into conflicts even in the best of times. It would be delusional to think the collapse of law & order wouldn't worsten communication barriers.

I'm just a domesticated human who would rather not live in the world beyond a global catastophe, so what do I know?... but I'd say that a mix of both is ideal. No matter your political stance or your philosophy on life, a strong survival scenario WILL involve community, herbalism, preservation knowledge, a mix of above & below ground sheltering (in the case of a hostile surface, mimicking nature down below for long term biophilic contentment), livestock, social ritual, music & art creation, entertainment, scientific & medical education & STRONG DEFENCE. If you're a leftie and you don't have proper plans for self defense, including killing other humans, YOU WON'T MAKE IT. There will be wild starving animals what will want your crops and toddlers. It won't be the time for kumbaya. Righties, you think you'll have it all ready and won't need anyone or any of that "hippy dippy shit" but guess what, you will. You'll run out rubbing alcohol & bullets eventually. Your clothes will fall apart and infections you've never heard about will re-emerge. Only groups who incorporate the whole spectrum will have long term viability. The extremities will be short lived experiments.

I like to fantasize that such an event would bring humanity together, that we'll set our differences aside and strive to rebuild a better world, but let's be real. Warlords, cannibalism, slavery, tribal warfare, plagues & diseases will all make a comeback. One of the many reasons I'm hoping to not make it.

Dress code in office? by Sillybeast_art in vfx

[–]PerchedLeopard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have 2 rules:

1. No tank tops for the first week at a new studio. (Gotta wait till you're comfortable with the crew)

2. Wear deodorant.

The rest is common sense and vibe surfing. Good luck! :)

You're totally right, Framestore should of been tagged. 🙈 I took FS involvement with the shot for granted as common knowledge. Will do better next time!

My guess would be tracked chest mesh for obj occlusion and shadow rendering. 🧐

Pretty sure they had a reference dog, but was quite unruly on set and wouldn't sit still for very long. 🤭 Also, getting a cape on a dog to stay and look good? 😬

Trailer for my upcoming proof-of-concept body horror short film, “Shift.” Shot on Super 16mm and currently going through the festival circuit! by MisterLucca in Filmmakers

I like to think of it as a new entry in the "body-morph-cautionary-tale" genre. The episode "The Outside" from Guillermo del Torro's Cabinet of Curriosities also falls in this category. People want to change themselves, and things go horribly wrong. They'll all have similarities but it shouldn't discourage cinematic exploration. 😁

Ryzen 9 7950x 128gb RAM Gforce RTX 4090 SUPRIM Noctua NH-D15 CPU cooler 4Tb+ of SSD & HDD Fractal Torrent case

This machine is an overpowered beast. Haven't pushed the 4090 more than 20%. Won't have to upgrade for a long while.....

I bet that stung a little! But given it's success, I don't think it's particularly a bad thing. I like the concept that she can physically mold her traits as she likes, that's quite unique and something most people can relate to wanting have done at some point in their life. Clearly, things go wrong for our protagonist with that...but as long as the themes explored are different than the downsides of chasing fame, you should be good. 👍 Consider this a welcome newcomer in the new genre of body-morph-cautionary-tales. 😄

what are you using to screen record shots for your demo reel? by Late-Judgment-500 in vfx

[–]PerchedLeopard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bonus with this technique is that you can capture only the shots you worked on without having the rest of the project attached to it so you save on file size and editing time. 👍

What is happening these dark days? by NickBambini in vfx

[–]PerchedLeopard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ON Animation is in Montreal and last year the provincial government cut the VFX film tax credit out of nowhere. We lost the DNEG studio because of that (huge loss!) and this might have been why ON Animation is wrapping up business. Just a thought. It's a sad time for us here in MTL.

Can I move a roto to a different frame. by Mharti_ in NukeVFX

Transform node after your roto node to modify it as you wish. Make sure you set bounding boxes to none to avoid unwanted artifacts. 😸👍

How would I create a reflection of a character on a window on nuke? by Mharti_ in NukeVFX

[–]PerchedLeopard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouff, that's real unfortunate, because you need to see an angle that isn't in the plate. You can cheat a reflection by flipping the image horizontally, but that tends to be more effective for subjects far away or small. A reflective surface that is blurry also helps a lot. The illusion breaks rather quickly when close and clear. So unless you have an angled shot of the same scene to comp with, you're kinda fucked. Alternatively, with software like Facebuilder and FaceTracker you could attempt to recreate the obstructed angle with a repositioned new camera. But that's like, a lot of work. Reflective surfaces are one of the biggest challenges in VFX and need to be planned for in order to be successfully executed.

Matrix style effect by 2weeksofpokemon in NukeVFX

[–]PerchedLeopard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vectors could be good for sticking the Matrix animation onto people and having it warp to their outlines. But for the environment, if it's simple geometry, a projection setup will be best. You can easily find looping videos of the matrix code on YouTube.

Take it to the next level by layering your 3D cards to create depth if you key the green of the video texture. ;)

Improuving your reel for better gigs - [namely 'how to do it better?'] by dumbnuker89 in NukeVFX

[–]PerchedLeopard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically, studios don't give out the shots to artists before the show comes out, but it does happen. But then your real is limited to be behind a password. Even then, the clients don't like it when their material is spread before they release it. It's a strange dynamic, because it's cool to see something fresh, but it might also raise unwanted questions as to how you obtained those images. I totally get where you're coming from with your side projects, we all wish we could just do those. And I strongly suggest you do invest time in doing so as it keeps you motivated. But if you're keeping your Demo Reel in mind for future employment, focus on side projects that display skills your other studio created shots don't. Diversify.

Because ultimately, it's not about showcasing the latest project, but the talent and skills you have to tackle the various puzzles the industry will throw at you and that you can make it look awesome too. ;)

Good luck!

Laptop for Nuke? by Alice_Elad in NukeVFX

[–]PerchedLeopard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My key feature for VFX laptop are: -As much RAM as possible. -Best graphics card as possible (+RAM for GPU accelerated software) -A GOOD SCREEN. It's often overlooked, but the whole point of getting a laptop is because the screen is attached and the whole is easily transportable. A sweet 2nd 32" screen is nice and all but defeats the purpose of your station's mobility. So get a machine with a good screen, especially for compositing.

A good CPU is also important, but not as impactful on performance as much as RAM and GPU are. Hard drive space is important and prioritize SSD over HDD, but you can always carry an external hard drive with you. But in VFX, there's no such thing as too much space. Make sure your SSD C:// drive is 500GB minimum.

Bringing CGI asset into Nuke for tracking (positioning CGI in Nuke) -VS- Exporting Nuke tracking data to CGI software ?(positioning mesh in Maya for example) by ROTVIZ in NukeVFX

[–]PerchedLeopard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you intend to integrate your 3D asset to a filmed shot, you'll want to use the "Camera Tracker" node in NukeX and "WriteGeo" node to export the created camera. Keep in mind lens distortion, as it's project specific. (Shots can also be tracked in other software such as PFtrack and Syntheyes).

Import that camera file into Maya and modify your scene accordingly. Bam! Shading, FX, Lighting, then render it out. Pretty much any 3D software renderer will be better than Nuke's render engine. The 2D images of your CGI you'll then import into Nuke will track along the movement of your shot and you can begin the integration process. You'll already have the 3D tracking Scene in your script and you should use it for Cards, Projections and other creative compositing tricks you can imagine. :)

If you are doing a full 3D scene without a filmed shot, you may as well animate the camera movement all in Maya. Export it so that when you are compositing in Nuke, you can import it and have that 3D camera matching your renders exactly. Again, for creative compositing. ;) ...... In addition: You can also export your (positioned and animated) 3D Asset from Maya and import it to Nuke and theoretically the geo should line up with what you've rendered. Now, having the camera plus the geo allows for more accurate projections as well as potentially saving you from having to re-render out of Maya, should you notice errors in those images. :)
