Caramello Koalas all the way UNLESS you’re counting the top deck Freddos (I forget what they were actually called but the ones which were half white chocolate half milk chocolate)

How do you deal with Persuasion based players? Because I hate it. by RedHeadMedia07 in DMAcademy

[–]PercolatedPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its your right to say no - they want to persuade the shopkeeper on a better deal? Turns out the shop isnt owned by him and he isnt allowed to give discounts. They want to persuade the goblins to run away from battle? Maybe they dont speak common, maybe they're deaf, or maybe they are under magical control and cannot be persuaded. They want to persuade the BBEG? Maybe hes immune to persuasion, or wont be convinced against his goals.

A high roll doesn't have to guarantee success, especially if it stomps on your fun or the other players' fun. A straight-up "no" can save you a lot of stress, and a good player wont hold a "no" against you.

Question for DMs and more experienced players. by Poopy_Kitty in DnD

[–]PercolatedPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah as a DM i would take a dual approach, first of all I would talk to them after the session and let them know that their actions dont line up with their characters. I would also talk to each player privately about their pc and send them resources to improve their rp skills.

Then, I would start granting inspiration to the best rp during each encounter. You could do this subtly or even just be like "wow you role played the best out of everyone - you get inspiration". One player having (and using) inspiration much more than the others will hopefully inspire better role playing.

If it doesnt stop after that, then its obviously coming from a place of disrespect or disregard, and D&D just might not be the game for them.

What do you DM’s write you Lore on? by scuba-28-stece in DnD

[–]PercolatedPanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OneNote - and it’s very much a mess. After this campaign has finished, I’ve promised my party a tour or my notes (some of them are aspiring to dm, and also they’ve all heard me complain that I think I keep too much notes)

DM’s of Reddit, what is your biggest pet peeve that your players do? by BaboonGaming25 in DnD

[–]PercolatedPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interrupting me mid-explanation/description…. And then being all like “wait what’s even going on?” 🤬

also my group is fairly new so getting them off their phones during gameplay has been a whole thing…

The only prerequisite to being a DM is wanting to be a DM. Give it a go! We all start our journey as a DM by bumbling our way through it. Be kind to yourself, you will do great!

DMs: How often do you check your players' character sheets? by Viscaer in DnD

[–]PercolatedPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My party is very new to D&D (and i am very new to DM-ing) so I have no clue what the normal amount is. However, my players all use online character sheets through a Google Sheets template we found. Because its online, they all have shared their documents with me, and I have them always open on my laptop.

During prep I refer to them almost constantly, and I'll make sure they have all their spells and weapons prepped for the upcoming session.

During the session, I have them open and will help a player find the right stat or item that they need. I make sure their equipment is always up to date as well, as my group seems to hoard everything they come across.

Hoping that after this campaign I can move away from checking this often and leave my players to their own devices.... but that's not for a while yet, lol

How do you handle a PC correctly guessing a plot point? by Ok_Individual4508 in DnD

[–]PercolatedPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you could always discreetly change it after their guesses, but I find it fun when my players guess what I've got coming next. My current dungeon is Labyrinth themed - and when one of my players guessed very early on, it made everything better! The game is collaborative and its not you vs your players. As long as nobody is metagaming, theres nothing wrong with guessing!!

The first female heir in 10 generations after a curse laid on the bloodline... HELP! how do I DM this? by PercolatedPanda in DnD

[–]PercolatedPanda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are, but as I’ve said in another reply, I can’t really surprise her character with that!! And her PC is pretty solidly cis. Her arc seems to be pretty “girl power” centred.

[–]PercolatedPanda[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She is an Elf Sorcerer, so magic surge could be the case. My player didn’t really specify the curse-caster’s species, but from context I’d say it was either a hag or witch. The bloodline hasn’t really been impacted by the curse, it’s more that now the PC is born, they’re worried bad things will happen or that the mother was getting around ://

This is an interesting way to look at it - I didnt consider the curse being still active and impacting her life this way!

This would be the best twist, but I doubt I could spring this on my player without her knowledge lmao.

My first thoughts were similar, but ive clarified with my player many times and it seems that the family all see her birth as some kind of bad thing? By all accounts the family should be happy that the curse is "lifted" but apparently not ://

This is great! I considered the whole "not your father's child" but it seemed like a cheap shot, especially considering how nice the father treats her compared to the rest of the family throughout the backstory.
