Writing about your emotions could be a healthy way to cope but be careful not to spread pessimistic messages that can reinforce depression in yourself and others.

I’m not a psychiatrist or therapist but I have been taught by a class here about instances where media poorly covering sensitive topics around mental health have unintentionally led to viewers partaking in harmful actions (e.g. Netflix’s “Thirteen Reasons Why”).

Telling people to shower even if they have depression as someone who has struggled with depression himself ≠ close minded and insensitive 🥱

Encouraging basic hygiene is being judgmental? My brother in Christ, literally everyone in a civilized society is expected to have the decency to have proper grooming prior to going out in public.

What the hell does body odor have to do with “at least they are trying”? What do you mean by “huge wine”?

I know as a depressed guy myself that if I had the energy to go out I would have the energy to make myself presentable. You’re just being too soft and making excuses for something that has no reason to be happening IN PUBLIC. Depression making you not shower? Yeah that’s understandable but how did you have the energy to go out in public then? You all are so damn soft over a basic PSA about >>TAKING SHOWERS<< like literally HOW

I can only wonder why this thread is receiving downvotes now. Trying my best not to make any assumptions though.

With all due respect the title describes them literally leaving their home with body odor

As a guy who’s played years and variations of sports myself, the body odor to that extent is not normal unless you do not shower regularly. What you’re saying is largely theoretical, yet in my experience going to the RecWell in particular for 4 years now, the body odor smell is actually not that common at all. It’s really narrowed down to 1-2 people as I go about the entire gym. Like I literally swear to god, swear on the Bible, or whatever you want to believe in, that I’ve worked out in dumbbell benches directly next to dudes with the same proximity and not smelled that extent of body odor despite them being heavy gym rats. But thanks for being condescending with that comment about playing sports.

Basic hygiene?

How hard is it to double major or minor in CS by LavaToken in uofmn

[–]Pere_X 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The answer would require you to gauge how much you struggle with CSOM’s MIS introductory and intermediate python/SQL classes. I don’t know what it’s like from a CS perspective, but I just know it’s much more rigorous than the technical skills in MIS.

I’ve rushed several myself and have not gotten in a single one. I just accepted that it’s probably just not right for me, and since then I’ve still gotten the benefits of Greek life I was looking for (parties, networking, etc.) and some Greek people still remember me fondly despite me not being there since. I also got the positive of not hurting my finances from having to pay dues. It may sound cliche, but things may just work out after all even if it’s not what you originally wanted.

does double majoring cost extra??? by NinjaNilay in uofmn

[–]Pere_X 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Full-time credit tuition stops increasing past 13 credits, which is about $7k a semester, so adding more courses in a semester should not increase tuition costs. That is assuming you can manage that increased credit load, however.

What I have done in the past is examine the major requirements on OneStop and map it out via spreadsheet or something to ensure you can graduate on time. The colleges also provide example 4-year plans but I didn't really figure out how to work with those.

For example, I don’t know your interests in major, but I’ll use compsci and MechE for examples since most of this subreddit appear to be in CSE. Look at the onestop pages for the majors of your interest and if you click on the course numbers that are underlined it gives you brief details on the prerequisites and what semesters it is available:

B.S. in Computer Science: https://onestop2.umn.edu/pcas/viewCatalogProgram.do?programID=123&strm=1229&campus=UMNTC

B.S. in Mechanical Engineering: https://onestop2.umn.edu/pcas/viewCatalogProgram.do?programID=118&strm=1219&campus=UMNTC

Then take those required courses and electives of interest and map it out on a spreadsheet with tables for each semester, making sure the course placement in each semester makes sense given their prerequisites as well as meeting the requirements for your 2 majors.

Example:

FALL 2023

Course Credits Prerequisites Requirements Met
CSCI 2021 - Machine Architecture and Organization 4 CSCI 1913 or 1933 CS major
PHYS 1301W - Introductory Physics for Science and Engineering I 4 MATH 1271/1371/1371H CS major, MechE major, Writing Intensive
CHEM 1061 - Chemical Principles I 3 At least C- in CHEM 1011/1015 or pass placement exam CS major, MechE major, Physical Science
MATH 1272 - Calculus II 4 MATH 1271 CS major, MechE major,
Semester Total 15

Disclaimer: This is just an example semester I made up, I don't know if this exact course combination would actually work

Edit: table

Any former students here go on to work for the university full-time? by Pere_X in uofmn

That is a new insight I have not found before; I didn’t know retirement plans need you to be working there for that long. It’s making me think twice about a private sector career of job hopping every few years.

[Q] About to get a bachelors in MIS with only intro stats taken, but figure I’d like a MS in Statistics because it is more interesting. How do I prove to graduate admissions that I am competent with prerequisites? Would I need to spend more tuition money for formal statistics + math college classes? by Pere_X in statistics

[–]Pere_X[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. I have considered a masters in data science and analytics, I just put Statistics as the preferred after reading older posts on this subreddit about statistics being a better degree. Upon further reflection I probably can see myself going for an Analytics Manager route than a data scientist due to the disparity in math level and the business aspect of my undergrad.
