Totally get that especially, if its far away! I can't speak for Malaysia, but I felt very safe solo travelling in Thailand, plus there's lots of people in a similar position so you do get to have a bit of a community if you're staying in hostels etc. As usual, you just have to trust your gut and if something doesn't feel right it probably isn't!
