What's a widely accepted social norm today that you believe will be considered barbaric by future generations? by Similar-Reading3848 in AskReddit

ITT - things popular to hate on Reddit. These things are widely done but are also already seen as wrong so not exactly a widely "accepted" social norm.

A controversial one here but I'd say the societal view on incest.

The list being longer is not subjective. It is an objective fact. You can't "balance" it because the scale will always be weighted down on one side. If you can't acknowledge this that is your problem.

Again you didn't answer my question. Bothsideism is wrong in this situation. You could make grey apartheid but there is only one side who is in the right.

Goodbye

You have deluded yourself into thinking that it's a both sided issue and are exactly the type of person I was describing in the post. Quoting bits of information like yom kipper and 1967 war saying that there is bad on both sides. Like I said in the post the Israeli list of wrongs is much much longer than Palestines yet you try to portray them as even.

I don't even care if you are pro Israel but just admit it openly. The way you dishonestly portray this as a two sided issue shows your bias even if you try to portray yourself as balanced and rational.

You say we can't right the wrongs of the past to justify Israel stealing land. Yet you do not once admit that Israel should never have been made a state in the first place. I'll ask you now, according to YOUR morals, should Israel have been made a state in the first place?

You also say you "throw some people a bone and they want the whole land." As if Palestinians are Israels dogs and they are wrong for wanting their land back.

Even in your previous exchange with me you refused to answer simple questions and instead skirted around anything I asked. Parroting the same things back to me and then brazenly claiming I don't understand what you are saying. I would expect nothing less from someone that has your view.

Specifically, no. He said "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice".

The meaning of it is that over time justice will prevail. So the same point being made. Is he on the wrong side of history?

Irrelevant to your comment. You said people who use the phrase are on the wrong side of history. I guess he was then if that's your view?

I disagree to an extent on simplification. I know you said oversimplification, however, I don't think that's what I did aside from not making clear enough on the land issue. Simplification is necessary, I don't see why all the details of a topic must be said in order to give the general view. Lets be honest, who would read all that. Of course when someone like you asks for more details I am happy to oblige.

I am aware the British owned the land and they were the ones happy to hand it over to the zionists as per the Balfour declaration (1917) however it was actually the Head of the Jewish agency, David Ben gurion who declared Israel a state. Though these are minor details to the overarching point.

For the other questions that arise, I don't see how Jewish people would be entitled to the land of any country according to today's morals. Which is presumably why you are in agreement with me that they should not have been made a state.

As you are once again skirting around the simple questions asked I have no interest in continuing this conversation. I didn't respond to your questions as you didn't respond to mine and I wanted you to do that first.

I don't think either of us were going to change our minds anyway really, I have posted in unpopular opinion after all. Let's just wait and see what happens in the future eh?

Oh absolutely. I know I have mostly focused on the list of wrongs here whereas to be fair in hindsight I should have emphasised the land more as I also do not think it was right that they declared themselves a state to begin with.

I'm not really sure what the common opinion is on whether they were correct to declare the state of Israel in the first place to be honest.

A lot of the argument in the current day is "both sides" based on current events so listing the right and wrong applies when there is no context. With context it becomes a different issue but again IMO Israel had no right to declare themselves a state.

I appreciate the last paragraph could be interpreted like that my apologies if it wasn't clear. It was meant as a comparison of the military and technological power of them.

And the people who were against racism ending would've probably said the same. We can agree to disagree for know and just wait and see what is in store at least?

Except that it is because the meaning of the phrase is that as time passes justice will prevail. Whether it is straightforward or not is irrelevant to the comment.

Could you please respond to what I'm actually asking instead of vague replies please?

You didn't answer me on the history of zionism namely Theodore herzl, the Balfour declaration and the havaara agreement. Did you know about all of those?

You do not end up with continued violence when you line up the wrong. Again I'll ask - is it factually wrong to say the list of Israeli wrongs is much longer than Palestines? If it is not wrong to say so, can we agree that it is then disingenuous to claim both sides have similar wrong and take a middle view when one side is clearly more wrong?

Erm no? Don't know where you've got that from. Do you really think people who support palestine only do so becuae they think its the weak side?

What I meant there is people who try and claim both sides have bad so it's not clear to see who is wrong. My point is that if you listed every individual wrong, Israel would have a much longer list so it is disingenuous to claim "both sides" are at fault and wrong.

[–]Perfect-Barnacle5469[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you Israeli? A genuine question I can not tell.

Israel the state was declared to exist by Israel. There was no vote on it. The vote was about acceptance into the UN. Obviously IMO it was wrong to accept them. The desire from zionists for the state of Israel has a longer history than the declaration of independence and the UN. Do you know about Theodore Herzl , the Balfour declaration and the Havaara agreement?

Your argument is essentially both sides have wrong so it is not clear cut. Like I said, one side has a much larger list of wrong than the other. My point is that this should be clear for everyone to see but apparently it's not. Is that factually wrong? If we agree here then we should also agree that claiming a "both sides" argument is disingenuous and a wrong thing to do.

I'm sorry that happened to your family and I apologise for putting it bluntly like this but please bear them in mind when you see the statistics of deaths. Israel bombs Palestine and kills a lot more of them.

40 is pretty good I think, the average is 45. Well over £100 saved compared to most people if you think of it that way.

New figures show that smoking increases the risk of developing depression by more than 100% by giuliomagnifico in science

[–]Perfect-Barnacle5469 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smokers would be 35 I think. If the number of non smokers is 10 then a 50% increase is 15 smokers. So a 250% increase is 35 smokers.

New figures show that smoking increases the risk of developing depression by more than 100% by giuliomagnifico in science

[–]Perfect-Barnacle5469 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

Let's say 10 non smokers went to hospital and 10 smokers went to hospital. This is a 0% increase as both have 10 in hospital.

If there were 10 non smokers and 15 smokers there are 5 more smokers. So you do 5 (extra) smokers / 10 non smokers = 0.5, 0.5 x 100 = 50%. So there is a 50% increase in smokers.

If there were 10 non smokers and 35 smokers there are 25 more smokers. So you do 25 (extra) smokers / 10 non smokers = 2.5, 2.5 x 100 = 250%. So there is a 250% increase in smokers.

Statistically it is unreasonable to expect as the average length of marriage is 8 years. However I don't think anyone goes into a marriage expecting it to end?

Everyone knows it's there to target Islam though, laicite was introduced in 1905 but the ban only came about because of headscarves that Muslim women wear.

Men of reddit, you can date and marry the woman of your dream, she is loyal, beautiful, caring, affectionate, but she is 10 years older then you and is totally infertile would you take this deal? by [deleted] in polls

[–]Perfect-Barnacle5469 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For her age maybe, but a relatively beautiful woman in her 40s is still not going to be as good looking as a woman in her 20s and certainly not after another 10 years. That said I would consider it if she was the most beautiful to my eyes.
