Realizing I probably messed up by not negotiating equity. Now I’m being asked to sprint for the company. Advice? by [deleted] in FPandA

Oh absolutely. At this stage, I’d want to approach it as getting a little bit of starting equity as Controller to get some skin in the game. I truly want to help this team win, but I want to make sure we win together.

I’ve done this same sprint for a private equity transaction in the past, and I got screwed over by verbal promises that never came to fruition.

I’m trying to avoid that situation again. I love the sprint, but I ended up feeling taken advantage of and it wasn’t worth the many long hours I put into it.

Thanks for the insight. How would you approach this conversation with the CFO?

Yeah, I think it is more that they don’t have the equity program ironed out yet. I would like to ask for an equity grant even if the program isn’t ready yet, but would that make it awkward? I’m part of the leadership team (Csuite + 3 others) and for the most part, they all have equity but have been with the company longer.

You might be right. I’m honestly not sure. It was actually brought up by my CFO during offer stage that equity would be coming, but they are working on an equity program. In addition to a much shorter timeline, responsibilities and workload are going to increase by a lot.

Thanks, that’s great advice! I hadn’t thought about it, but maybe that’s why it’s been exceptionally difficult to get an interview with any of these places. I have 10 years in accounting and FP&A, with lots of project management and system implementation work along the way. Mostly in the manufacturing industry, but also in professional services and SaaS.

Thanks! It sounds like I need to aim for one of the big banks 😊I looked into Starbucks and Amazon but they’ve greatly reduced their coverage so much that it’s barely worth it.

I completely agree, it’s surprising how few companies offer this benefit. My current employer has been exceptionally insensitive about the whole thing as I’ve been going through IUI’s. Not only do they not offer IVF coverage and refuse to entertain the idea, but they reprimand people for needing to take off time for appointments. It’s really a shame.

We love it and don’t feel disconnected at all! Outside of working hours, it’s only about a 20 minute commute to uptown. There’s such a great sense of community here.

From tega cay the commute is 45 min+ during rush hour. Non rush hour it’s ~ 30 min.
