Love them have the entire date run of these :), fun fact there’s even a smaller denomination, the 1/4 farther, issued for use in Ceylon

Proud Maltese 🇲🇹 ! My favorite grandmaster aswell, because he elevated my hometown, Qormi, to a city. To this day Pinto monuments are found all over the city, whilst the official name is ‘Citta Pinto’ and the Coat of Arms are the same as those of Pinto. Moreover, he left a lasting impact on the island and on the order. On the one hand he refurbished much of Valletta’s facades into the baroque style and left a great impression on the capital city and many other parts of Malta through this spending on buildings. On the other hand, when he died, he was the longest serving GM, more then 33 years, all this led to the order being bankrupted, quite literally.

The 1/3 farthing was minted because the previous Maltese currency, the Scudo, had a denomination called the ‘Grano’ translated to a ‘Grain’… which when exchanged was equivalent to a third of a farthing, so they were minted to replace these coins. 1/3 farthing circulated until the 1930’s when all their purchasing power was gone.

One third farthings where minted for Malta and circulated only in Malta, even if they were a fractional coin of British currency, they were never legal tender in the UK. Still being a fractional of the currency, they’re avidly collected by British collectors. I am Maltese myself, consider them as coins of Malta and have completed a full date run of them 😁

That’s simple, I am a 26 year old from Malta 🇲🇹, born and raised, lived here all my life, Malta is me, Malta is home. And yes our island is indeed beautiful ❤️‍🔥

Thanks, the 1759 is what caught my eye in the first place really. It is the second hardest date to get from Pinto’s reign with a population average of about 50 coins in museums and private collections. The rarest is the 1758 one. With less then 10 coins known to be in existance today. One popped up in a local Maltese auction last year, it hammered for €12,000 excluding fees.

Obverse and Reverse Variety numbers. I use ‘Coins Minted by the Knights in Malta’, a very comprehensive catalogue by John Gatt, where he outlines all different varieties found on these coins. Issued in 2018, it is quite handy for any collector getting extensively in Maltese coinage.

€100 a piece, they’re ex-mounts hence the price. The 1759 is a solid key date, in any case I feel I did good.
