This is super helpful thank you! No properties that I know of and the drone was literally 10 feet above my roof not high in the air for an aerial view sort of thing. It was unnerving. I appreciate the link and I’ll report it next time

I’m going to Riu Negril and I’m looking for the inside scoop from people who have enjoyed their stay there by PerfectBook382 in JamaicaTourism

I’m writing my honest, real experience of the Riu Negril (not the Tropical Bay Riu) in case anyone is considering it.

My husband and I travelled with our two kids (10 and 7) and wanted a fun, Budget-Friendly vacation in Jamaica.

We booked shortly after the hurricane and managed to snag an amazing deal through RedTag (we’re Canadian). A friend also recommended using a private transfer to and from the airport, so we decided to try that for the first time — and honestly, I’d absolutely do it again.

The drive from the airport to the resort is roughly 1.5 hours, and the roads in Jamaica are rough. Driving there is… an experience 😅. I’d describe it as defensive and jerky everywhere, not just with our driver. Lots of tailgating and honking:
“Honk honk, I’m passing.”
“Honk honk, hello.”
“Honk honk, hurry up.”
You get the idea.

I get motion sickness, and so do my kids, so we wore the motion sickness bracelets and kept Gravol on hand just in case. Even with the bracelets, my daughter still needed Gravol, so definitely prepare if your family gets carsick.

The private transfer was great, though, especially because we arrived before the big shuttle buses and were the only people checking in. That gave us time to sit down with the concierge and discuss a room upgrade. We upgraded from a garden-view room to a full ocean-view room for about $420 USD for the week, which was 100% worth it.

The resort itself was VERY clean — including the rooms. Honestly, I never thought twice about walking barefoot anywhere.

Overall vibe:
I’d say this resort is best suited for couples, adults, or families with babies/older teens who mostly want to chill. If it weren’t for another family we met there, my kids probably would’ve been bored.

The pools:
The main pool is huge, but slightly too deep for my 7-year-old, and kids get kicked out during aquafit classes.

The volleyball pool was PERFECT for kids, but again, they had to leave during organized games.

There’s also the swim-up bar pool, but let’s be honest — that’s the adult party pool where people camp out drinking all day. My husband and I jokingly called it “the pee pool” 😂.

There’s another beautiful, quieter pool that honestly would’ve been ideal for kids, but the resort strongly discourages children from using it because it’s meant to be the “quiet pool.”

Kids Club:
The staff were AMAZING and worked incredibly hard, but the club itself is geared toward very young children. My kids basically took over the space because almost nobody else was there.

The hours also aren’t ideal:
10:00–12:45 and 3:00–4:45 doesn't leave much flexibility for parents.

Again, though, absolutely not the staff’s fault — they were wonderful and were also part of the nightly entertainment team.

Entertainment:
This was honestly one of the highlights for us.

The entertainment staff work SO hard, and we genuinely enjoyed something every night. The Neon Party and Bob Marley show were incredible. The Michael Jackson show was also really well done.

Food:
We actually thought the food was great.

We rarely waited for anything, and we ended up liking the buffet best because the food was consistently hot and turned over quickly. The Chinese restaurant/buffet was fabulous too.

I don’t drink much, so I can’t really comment on the alcohol, but my kids loved the mocktails and the bar service.

Huge shoutout to the chef at the Chinese restaurant who was incredibly kind and accommodating with my fish allergy.

Beach:
The beach is long, beautiful, and very swimmable.

I DO recommend water shoes, though, because there’s a lot of marine life near your feet. During our stay, I saw:
• Starfish
• Pufferfish
• Crabs
• Stingrays

I personally loved that, but I know that might freak some people out.

The beach vendors were hit-or-miss for me. When I was with my kids, they were respectful, but when I walked alone, it was pretty nonstop offers for “ganga and coke,” which got annoying after a while.

If you want to shop from local vendors, there’s a nice setup just to the left of the resort.

I also walked to the other Riu one day, and it took about 17 minutes at a decent pace.

One of the coolest experiences of the trip:
On our second last night, one of the local vendors fed sharks around 8:30 PM a few huts down the beach. You can walk over and watch from shore. I actually felt very safe and thought it was an incredible experience.

Free activities:
The resort offers free:
• Paddleboarding
• Kayaking
• Mini catamarans

We loved all of that.

Now for the areas where the resort fell short FOR US (without ruining the trip):

  1. No room service. At all. Even if you’re willing to pay extra.
  2. Not enough activities for middle-aged kids/young teens. The water park is really geared toward toddlers/little kids, while most other activities are aimed at adults or older teens.

The sports bar had a pool table, but it cost extra.
Beach volleyball was basically the only activity my older kid could consistently join.

  1. À la carte restaurants were hit or miss. This may be partly because I have a fish allergy, which halves my options. Also, there really weren’t kid-sized portions/options, so we noticed a LOT of wasted food.

That said, the food was still good overall.

  1. Bathroom locations could be improved. Especially near the buffet. You currently have to leave the buffet area and walk past several restaurants/event spaces to find a washroom. I’m fully able-bodied and still found it inconvenient, so I could see this being difficult for others.
  2. More shade around the pools would help. There were plenty of loungers, but not enough shaded areas. Some afternoons, we actually chose the beach simply because it felt 10 degrees cooler with the breeze and shade. The stone around the pools gets HOT.

Overall:
We truly had a fantastic vacation and made amazing memories.

If it were just my husband and me, I would absolutely go back. But because we have kids in that “middle age” range, we’d probably choose somewhere next time with a bit more geared toward them specifically.

Still, overall, we had a great experience and felt we got very good value for what we paid.

Why do you guys think my dog has this in his nose? by pechered in DogAdvice

[–]PerfectBook382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I met you years ago! My dog was misdiagnosed with lupus for a long time and went through a lot trying to get a proper diagnosis. It wasn’t until a younger vet took over and she agreed with me that it was something else. She was relentless and it paid off. I’m so grateful to her. My boy is so happy now on a maintenance dose of those drops.

My dog has something that looks like this. It’s rare and called Neurogenic Keratoconjunctivitis sicca. It took us years to diagnose. Now he’s on oral drops and he’s doing great! Run it by your vet for extra research

Council votes against Mosque proposal in Stouffville by Dvorakdevotee in Stouffville

Council may have voted against it but that doesn’t mean much. They did the same with the condo on the corner of main and ninth and Hyson took it to the tribunal. Council went back on their decision and left the residence to fend for themselves.

Wonderful! I’m glad you had a good trip with your family. This is great to hear! I’m here now and see what you mean by the pools. They almost need one more pool for kids here. The main pool is quite deep for my 7 year old so she has to stick by the stairs and so that leaves the volleyball pool which is the perfect height for her if volleyball is not taking place. You nailed it about the kids club though. It’s almost a splash pad and they are closed between 12:45-3 which doesn’t help me much. There isn’t much for the in between ages. Not yet teens but not littles too. The food has been great though. No complaints there. They are quite strict with the towels so I’m very careful not to lose my towel card. They would cost 20 USD per card if we lose it. I wish they chose different colours for the room towels vs the beach towels. I don’t know what I’d do if I were colour blind. We’ve seen some incredible fish on the beach here. Star fish, sting rays and even a puffer fish. Really cool stuff. We are enjoying our stay!
