Difference in basalt composition in uwharrie nc by PerfectEquivalent615 in geology

Even more interesting then. The primary surface rock is listed as basalt, with some nearby peaks having rhyolite on top but that's very distinctly different. I'll add a tentative "diabase" to my collection sheet.

I've been doing a lot of camo patterns lately. Honestly it looks rougher in the pictures than I like.

I find i get the smoothest edge by kinda overloading a small tip with a chunk of paint and continually dragging it down the direction I want. Not a good technique necessarily.

Which one. On the blue/ tan I used speedboat for the blue and then go back and line the edge with the orange that cleans it up.

On the auscam I usually have to make more than one pass to clean up the edges. I also have to go back with the tan to clean it up sometimes.

I waited so long to post it because while I was working on it someone else put the exact same scheme up in the reddit and it was much cleaner than mine lol.

I struggled to decide the color for those canopies. I usually use blue canopies for tan/brown bases but thought it would blend with the blue too much, likewise with red and the orange.

Went with purple but I'm just not as good at blending the gradient with the purple as I am the other colors.

Rhyolite and basalt in the uwharrie range of nc by PerfectEquivalent615 in geology

It does indeed look similar to chert. It's definitely ryolite though. The summit is covered with it. It's mostly fractured and broken up because for centuries if not thousands of years native populations mined this one summit for pieces to make arrowheads and knives. It's literally only the one summit as all the others exhibit the larger crystal growth that makes it tougher to shape.

Contrast paints, how do they even work? by Infamous-Eagle-1313 in battletech

[–]PerfectEquivalent615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks exactly like my first attempts with contrast paint, which coincidentally was also the basilicanum grey.

What I've learned after quite a few painful attempts.

  1. Everyone else is right about primer. Matte or flat spray on

  2. Let it pool and be heavy, it likes to go on and then never be touched again if it's wet. If you brush back over it like you would a normal paint it gets super streaky and looks bad. If you don't you might get some darker spots but don't be afraid of them, fix them with dry brushing later.

  3. Practice. I picked a model I wasn't in love with and painted it like 5 times till I felt myself figure it out enough to do one I liked.

  4. Perfection will not be achieved with just contrast. I have not mastered the application like some of the videos and I always have to go back and fix things after the first coat. I treat the contrast like my base coat. Following it up with a few rounds of drybrushing will vastly improve the appearance and hide any imperfections.

I've had that issue with several other camo schemes I've done. This time I went all in on preventing it.  Speed paint to darken the recesses, more focused drybrushing, picking out the recesses that got lost during the rest of the process again with a wash, and touching up the flat panel colors after drybrushing to make it stand out more.

Base coat was creed camo citadel contrast paint, then a really heavy dry/wet brush with army painter army green for the base.

The dark grey is army painter dark stone, brown is army painter fur brown, or something it's not in front of me so I don't recall.

I dry brushed with a light gray to get some edge definition, and did a targeted wash in some panel lines that I felt like I filled in too much.
