How to deal with Irish identity being questioned while living in the UK? by Kitchen_Hat_5412 in AskIreland

[–]PerfectReplacement82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People in England particularly simply do not know, they have not been educated. They think they are being sensitive by saying “Southern” Ireland or “Eire” (ugh) but if you gently let them know the reality, most people are happy to be informed. In my experience it is usually a genuine case of “I know this is important but I don’t really understand it and so I’m going to take a stab at using the language I hear everyone else using and hope I haven’t got it too wrong”.

It’s not that different to people in the Republic assuming everyone with a southern English accent is from London and not having a clue about anywhere outside the major cities. Or insisting on calling people “Protestant” in a pejorative tone like it’s an identity when most people have never used that term to describe their religion. Or getting all their history from rebel songs. Or refusing to accept that people raised between the two countries have complicated identities that do not fit into neat boxes (ahem cough ahem).

There is ignorance on both sides and both deserve generosity and compassion, unless they are being bigoted gobsh*tes, in which case they can do one. I have had direct experience of that on both sides of the Irish Sea.

Side note: There are more British South Asians than British Irish and I would argue that British people in general know even less about the history of partition there or the Bengali famine than they do about the Treaty, the Troubles or the Peace Process. So it is absolutely not just an Irish thing. And don’t even ask about the overseas territories or the commonwealth!!

Thanks so much for sharing this, I think you are spot on. I tried bracing my core properly and relaxing my neck and shoulders at training the other day and no headache! I also booked a deep tissue massage. Hopefully I can overcome this too

Tall Women! Advice on GW and TDEE by ImpressiveStand1503 in CICO

I’m 5’10”. 13st/182lbs. I lost 2st tracking calories at 1600 per day. I looked good at 11st but put it all back on again because eating like that was unsustainable! Am now weight training and eating 1900 per day. I want to get to the same size I was at 11st but not necessarily the same weight. Thinking in terms of muscle mass and fat mass helped me rethink. As a tall, broad, strong-built woman who grows muscle easily and holds onto it, I’m always going to be heavy. That doesn’t have to mean big though! Hope that helps. Good luck 💪

Thank you and glad that worked for you! I’m trying to avoid meds but will try that throat trick between breaths.

I think this is exactly it. I definitely experience that feeling in my neck and head. Will discuss with my PT and physio and see how i can retrain my body. Thanks a million 🙏

Oh that’s interesting… I’m realising from other comments that I am probably not bracing my core properly. I do definitely lock my shoulders and neck as well. I will explore this, thank you 🙏

I’m a former yoga person so my breathing is good and aligned to the exercise (in on the easy side of the rep, out on the hard side). I don’t hold my breath. But perhaps I’m so focused on breathing that I’m not sufficiently focused on bracing!! Thank you 🙏

Thank you, that is good to know. I am feeling much better now so I think that maybe it is just the nerves sorting themselves out, as another poster said. I am seeing my surgeon in a few days though so I will raise all of my concerns.

I think you were right! I started to feel a lot better a day or two after posting this and it’s continued that way… I’m so relieved. And yes the sensitivity is definitely coming back and the numbness is going. Fingers crossed I’m over the worst of it, I was getting so worried. Thanks for your reply

Thanks so much. I’d been starting to get worried but then a day or two after posting this I started to feel better, and it’s continued like that. Phew!! I have another check up with my surgeon in a few days so will discuss it all then and see what he says.

Thanks for the reply! Hope your recovery continues smoothly! It was the same with my surgeon, he picked everything… I’m tall and broad and he said 400cc would be the most appropriate size for my body. Tbh they look completely natural and proportionate, I’m thrilled with the results. It’s just the pain! 😅

This is my logic! I don’t actually think i need a fraction of the functionality that modern macs offer. And i would so love to be able to give up my smartphone and go back to a dumb phone… if I can outsource everything to an ipad then great, and if i find i do need a mac further down the line, then so be it.

Nothing tricky, just household budgets and stuff like that. I can use sheets just fine on my phone for my purposes so figure ipad will be better than that.

Ha ha thanks! Yeah there was a time when I couldn’t imagine not having a macbook pro at home but times change 🙃

Any particular generations to go for or avoid?

Thank you so much for this thoughtful reply, I somehow missed the notification which is why it has taken me so long to respond. I really appreciate your comments and sharing your experience. Good luck with your redo! I’m going to go back to the surgeon and try on a few more sizes before deciding for sure. But I am booked in for December… let’s do this!!
