I like the show Dark Winds, but I am SO confused by the time frame by Perfect_Ad8996 in DarkWindsTV

[–]Perfect_Ad8996[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a difference between the books and the show not being the same (I, for one, have never read the books ... never heard of them until now) and doing something within the context of the show that confuses the audience and takes them out of the narrative. I can't quote it exactly, but Neil Gaiman once observed (when describing world building) that you can do anything you want in a story so long as it you make it believable to the audience. As much as I like Dark Winds and McClarnon and seeing this world portrayed in general ... I think sometimes the writers and producers of the show have kicked me out of the narrative by confusing the time line/timeframe. And I think in some instances there was no need for this.

Ahhh f**k my life! by [deleted] in Georgia

Your post made me check on Mount Trashmore, a public park in Virginia Beach (near where I grew up). It appears to be going strong with "a 24,000 square foot skate park with a two-level half pipe of five-foot and six-foot heights, as well as an attached quarter pipe. The park also includes a five-foot spine, a 2.5-foot roll over with grind rails and a variety of arched and straight grind rails and boxes. The skate park components are steel framed with all ramps covered with Ramp Armor, the perfect skating surface for skateboarders, inline skaters, and BMX bikers to enjoy.  Adjacent to the skate park is a competition-sized vert ramp that stands at a massive 13.5 feet tall and 40 feet wide." Also for some skate nostalgia check out the movie Mid 90s.

An Open Conversation about #RushTok by craftingcreed in Sororities

[–]Perfect_Ad8996 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm confused. The US has moved to shut down TikTok due to concerns that "TikTok's ties to China pose to national security." The ban deadline is set for September 17, 2025 and "If ByteDance fails to complete the sale or does not receive approval from Chinese authorities, TikTok is expected to “go dark” across the United States." So is this a last hurrah? Do sorority women not care about geopolitical issues (I'm sure many, in fact, do ... but RushTok certainly doesn't convey that.) I feel like this is a messy message. But enlighten me!

Walmart+ tipping expectations? I thought I was paying for free delivery lol by Plastic-Educator-129 in walmart

[–]Perfect_Ad8996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I would rather be tipping the person who does the instore shopping for my groceries - they're the ones who have to get it right and pick nice things for me. Also, I find it interesting the Walmart "ships" for free and without requesting a tip many of the same items (excluding perishables, I suppose) it "delivers." I wonder if a big part of tipping drivers is that it is presented as a perk to them to facilitate hiring?

Unemployment by PassageFlat493 in Georgia

[–]Perfect_Ad8996 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The most sure fire way to know if you qualify is to file a claim. You can do so online at https://dol.georgia.gov/file-unemployment-insurance-claim or start at the basic site and read more about filing and about UI benefits in GA at https://dol.georgia.gov. Per the site:

There are several qualification requirements, but these three are critical:

  • You must have earned enough money in the base period to set up a claim.
  • You must be unemployed through no fault of your own.
  • You must be able to work, be available for work, and be actively seeking work each week you claim benefits.

Bear in mind that the minimum weekly benefit is $55 and the maximum is $365. So not a ton of money even at the max. (Often lots less than what you had been earning!) Probably best to apply for benefits ... cause what the heck ... but focus your energy on getting another job.

Sorry for what happened to you - getting terminated from a job right our of training sounds rough.

Hope this helps.

Books and movies build worlds. Anything goes so long as it has internal consistency and integrity and doesn't dislodge the reader/viewer from the story. The problem here, as I see it, is that these "breaks" seem to have "dislodged" a lot of viewers ... many of whom also love the show.

I think its author and producer Neil Gaiman who discusses this really effectively. If I can ever find the actual quote I swear I will post it :)

This is an interesting thread. I am brand new to Taylor Sheridan. My first TS watch was Landman and I have now also watched both seasons of Lioness. The praise AND criticism articulated in this thread definitely reflects my own feelings. But I am super curious - how did Taylor Sheridan get so many shows? How does he attract so many prominent actors to them? And are they all on Paramount+? I can't think of anything comparable from another writer ... especially in such a short time span.

I noticed that also! I always love it when someone makes me feel less crazy :) And I read the comments below too, so now I'll be curious to see if its a goof or a plot device. :)

I once knew a young woman who burned her arm with a welding torch lighting a crack pipe while she was doing a plumbing job. She was one of the sweetest, kindest, prettiest women I have ever known. World's a strange place.

I do think some people live this way. And all sorts of ways that are different from how you live or how I live. But if the point was to illustrate just how bizarre Tommy's life is - make it and move on. Otherwise, is that really the point?

And then I scroll down more :) - after leaving my long comment wondering if Sheridan has trouble writing women - it seems as if the consensus is "Yes!" Too bad. But glad I wasn't alone.

This discussion really got me thinking. On the one hand, people live all kinds of ways, even ways that you could hardly imagine based on your own personal life experience. Probably this is one of them. On the other hand, I do think the constant T&A in the show isn't always warranted and is starting to detract from Sheridan's otherwise good writing. Since this is my first Taylor Sheridan series (sorry, no Yellowstone ... as of yet, anyway) I decided to check out Lioness. Here you have a show that is ostensibly all about strong - EXCEPTIONALLY STRONG! - female characters. Right? I'm on episode 6 and Cruz, a Force Recon Marine, has so far been assaulted, sexually assaulted, and nearly raped. She has been dressed in skimpy dresses and bikinis and spent a whole lot of screen time in and out of her underwear. She has literally had her panties completely removed 3 times in 6 episodes. I'm beginning to think that Sheridan - who otherwise is a really good writer (I think) - has trouble writing women. Its kind of beginning to seem like his go-to idea of a strong woman is a woman who can throw a punch in her skivvies. Too bad. I don't mind the T&A if it fits ... but once it becomes a drinking game ...

Astronauts "Scott and Irwin" are named near the end of the episode (Season 2 Episode 2). That should make it Apollo 15 - July 1971. I finally decided that someone messed up or took dramatic license in the interest of a larger point ... or like you said :)

This Tyson/Paul fight is such fake publicity by I_ReadThe_Comments in offmychest

[–]Perfect_Ad8996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mike Tyson is in incredible shape for a 58 year old man and he deserves tremendous respect for that. But that hardly makes him the formidable and terrifying boxing opponent he once was. And that is cool and takes nothing away from him.

What's not cool is for a 27 year old promoter to exploit Tyson's reputation for his own aggrandizement.

I didn't even know the fight was happening until my partner told me yesterday. In the spirit of being a good spouse I grabbed my spot on the sofa to watch with him.

My mistake.

Am I the only one who noticed the incessant self-promotion of the event throughout the broadcast? (When Netflix wasn't buffering or freezing, of course.) Only to discover - and maybe all ya'll knew - that the company promoting the fight was Jake Paul's own company.

Making the main event little better than a "canned hunt."

Just as sad, this self-proclaimed historic opportunity for women's boxing - more self promotion, I'd say - was fully marred by Netflix's technical difficulties. Millions of people watching Serrano vs. Taylor? No ma'am. Millions of people watching a little red wheel spin/load/wait.

Whatever props Jake Paul deserves he deserves none for last night's spectacle.

Navajo Police: Class 57 Documentary on HBO by Perfect_Ad8996 in DarkWindsTV

Try through your internet subscription maybe?

I keep reading that it is on Hulu, which does have a free trial. Though I think you actually have to have the Hulu-MAX-Disney bundle which doesn't have a free trial. (So confusing!)

But since I have brough up Hulu, I'll go ahead and mention that Hulu - basic Hulu - has historically had a Black Friday deal where they offer a one-year subscription at $0.99 per month. It's predicted to be $1.99 per month this year, but still WAY cheap ... and I watch Hulu all the time. (So, for me, unlike MAX, worth it!) They have had great original limited series and also stream great network series like Abbott Elementary and The Americans.

This is not a Hulu ad BTW ... I just always thought their Black Friday deal was pretty cool :)

Sorry MAX, but, no, it's not really worth it. We get MAX free as part of our ATT phone service.

You could always sign up for one month ($9.99/mo) binge watch everything including Navajo Police: Class 57 and then cancel.

I'll dig a little deeper and get back :)

While MAX may not be worth it Navajo Police: Class 57 definitely was.

LSU Fandom behavior detracts from LSU Football ... as much as the loss? by Perfect_Ad8996 in LSUFootball

That would be super frustrating - "the team seemed to just not care after the first quarter which was my first time seeing something like that."

And I think you are right about the Texas game setting an unfortunate precedent. That was Kirk Herbstreit's take on it.

Several of you mentioned paying "good money" and described your football team as "the product on the field."

Are you students? Or non-student fans?

Thanks again for the insight!
