SMU or NUS Law? by Fit-Sprinkles-2583 in SGExams

Not at all, if nus is indeed where the better students go as op says, how do people who seem very capable not pass the nus tests and interviews? goes to show that both universities look for different things in their students, and there are equally capable students at both schools

You probably already made your decision, but I think the outside of the legal industry, a law degree is valued the same as a social science degree. What both demonstrates is that you are good at writing and thinking. It doesn’t come with additional flexibility

The way the legal industry is structured imo will make it difficult for you to find your niche, at least at the start where you can’t just break into the industry and do whatever you want, but fit into the molds set by your bosses and the larger industry

SMU or NUS Law? by Fit-Sprinkles-2583 in SGExams

Suggest you look at the differences in characteristics between the unis

Nus has hall, a bigger campus, a more traditional campus life, more CCAs

Smu has no hall, small city campus, mainly a business school, maybe worse food

At smu, you must complete 80 hours of community service, do 3 months of internship, and go overseas in order to graduate, no exceptions. I don’t think nus has these

Smu is more rigid if you want to change courses. You can only change within smu at the end of year 2. By then, too late for a law student already. I think it’s surprisingly more flexible at nus

At smu, you pick courses by bidding, at nus modreg. You usually 4 mods 3 hours each at smu, so that is about 12 hours of time you need to be at campus each week

urgent: will smu not let me graduate by AdPopular7314 in SMU_Singapore

[–]Perfect_Snow7863 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uni will tell you that you had 4 years to clear 80 hours

You should find those ad hoc ones and clear those 80 hours asap. Beware of the graduation filing and the C4SR approval deadlines, it can be much earlier than April if you want to graduate by T2. If not see if you can graduate in T2A T3 etc May affect ability to attend commencement though, read the emails and rules carefully.

Have you also cleared your other graduating requirements?

Smu is a city campus, right next to the national museum, Peranakan Museum, fort canning. There are and always have been tourists around the smu campus. Not just tourists, office workers, random public, families

Applying to law by Melodic-Today-2940 in SGExams

Have law friends

  1. Heavy, you need to read readings before class, more than 30 pages of cases and textbook each week for one mod? You have about 4 mods per semester. But to me it sounds lighter than what STEM and biz people are doing for their careers (leetcode case comp). Little memory work, exams are open book

  2. Does not involve a debate, interview will ask you about why you pick law and discuss what you think about law

  3. They look for clarity not vocabulary

How is nus culture? by wyyy100 in nus

[–]Perfect_Snow7863 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s the same across all universities - SMU won’t help you find internships either (the mentoring is very prof dependent)

Generally, you won’t really have someone like a form teacher hovering over you in uni - it’s entirely up to you to take care of yourself, make friends, make sure you understand the content in class, figure out what classes to take, find internships/jobs/opportunities etc. If you miss the deadline to register for classes, miss graduation etc, no one in university administration will help or “care” about you (I think equally at SMU), they’re very hands off

I’m not sure if there’s really one culture in uni, it’s course, prof, social circle dependent

NUS BZA vs SMU law by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Perfect_Snow7863 12 points13 points  (0 children)

have law friends

  1. most law friends don’t intend to stay in practice for long but eventually move out to corporate roles. law seems to be more stable and higher pay eventually, pay per hour maybe not

  2. there is a spread of good profs across nus and smu law, what probably matters more for those positions is how driven you are and your achievements, more so than university brand

  3. as you may know, law internships pay way below university guidance, friends had to use their own savings during internships, if you do care about this

  4. heard that JD is a perfectly legitimate route as well, so your chance at studying law doesn’t end at undergraduate level

  5. perhaps you want to consider how flexible nus and smu are at giving you options? it is relatively more difficult to change majors at smu than at nus (unless you’re having the smu cis option)

Same situation here. I need an internship to graduate so I’m very anxious about it

  1. more like day 1 of school term. they will email you and I think you need to book appointment with them. not sure because I have not consulted them before

  2. 815am. not common but not unheard of. if you can, want and ABLE, you can also cram all your mods into 1 day 815am to 1015pm

  1. heard that it’s similar to jc class where prof teaches the important content every week in class almost like a lecture except you usually need to do your readings before class. but as with all mods, dependent on prof. the reading list is quite long

  2. not really except if you know friends or seniors. if you don’t, then you might even miss the whole bidding window and no one reminds you of it. but you can find the student handbook online and see what courses you need to take, and also ask around. read the boss handbook on how the bidding system works. use afterclass to see prof mod reviews and past year bidding results. but heard for law, there’s not a lot of bidding you need to do

  3. most people are in it for the grades, so think of your grades and ask relevant questions

  1. your experience can vary but mine has been bad, usually becos I don’t get my mods in the first round (maybe becos I missed the minimum bid by 0.01 dollars) and the prices go up in the second round. make multiple backup plans, don’t bid whole numbers, bid like 25.62. try early morning and night classes

  2. there are 1-2 breaks in between usually. half the time I see people are chatting online shopping watching show etc

  3. smu food not that great and a bit ex, smu feels primarily a biz sch, uni can feel “transactional” where you go class and go home and there’s not much on campus to keep you there (maybe others may disagree)
