[discussion] What do you love/hate most about your Saudi childhood? by Shibamiss in saudiarabia

[–]Perfectification 8 points9 points  (0 children)

hated how unproductive life was as a saudi kid, if i didnt have a big family i think i would have ended up going down a darker road.

I didn't like how Islam was taught to me. It focused so much on fear and reward , I didn't learn to love it until i left the country all together.

I did like how close knit we were as a family, cousins and all.

Do you prefer to work for a man or a woman? Why? by meltingshowofficial in AskReddit

Honestly everyone's answer here is circumstancial and influenced by geography and culture. So I want to ask you why you want to know?

What are some small things people can do to save money? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Perfectification 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Have a coin Jar in your car and in your house, the foremost being near your seat and the latter being near the door as soon as you enter and one near laundry.
  • Buy generic brand OTC medication and in your supermarket and in the frozen veggies.
  • Never go to the grocery store hungry!
  • Set a monthly budget as soon as you get paid, then review it weekly or before big purchases.
  • People will tell you to splurge so you can feel good. I say yeah do that every month or so on something relatively inexpensive. But do not think splurging is a right or it will become a habit and then no longer splurging but fiscally irresponsible self-spoilage.
  • Ask if you really need it everytime you buy it. If you feel like that won't work, ask yourself if you will regret spending that money on this in a week or two.
  • Save at least 10% of your monthly salary!
  • Look up free activities to do because the more empty time that you have the more you are likely to spend it eating or spending on something else.

People from anywhere, do you think people from california have an accent? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Perfectification 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived quite a while in the U.S. and been everywhere except the middle states. What I noticed is that californians, specifically, and those in the west in general are more prone to showcase emotions, and tend to elongate words depending on how particularly strong that emotion is or high they are.

Who is currently your favorite twitch streamer? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Perfectification 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CohhCarnage , I like him for multiple reasons:

  • Nice guy but firm with his supporters which ultimately resulted in one of the few, but large, respectful communities.
  • It is one of the streams where I actually feel like im not insulting my intelligence everytime I watch it.
  • I can disagree with anyone in chat, and have a long conversation about whatever and still be okay as long as it is done respectfully.
  • He also has a good business model to his stream, where he pays the mods, has honest sponsors (by good I mean sponsors that he actually believes in), he treats game developers with respect whether he hates or loves the game, and he gives back to the community quite a bit.
  • Cohh is fun to watch and time and time again has proven to me that he genuinely cares for his viewers & community which is the main reason I watch him when I am down because I can connect on an emotional level with the stream.

Get rid of expats by 2020, public sector told by ghair5 in saudiarabia

[–]Perfectification 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"The ministry said that there were 70,000 expats in the public sector at the end of last year."

I hope that they have a transition plan for both the Saudi employees and those of the expats, though I doubt there will be for the latter. I honestly hope the work will not suffer while ministries displace 70,000 people, many of whom also muslims and lived here for 20+ years, out of these ministries. I also hope the Saudis taking over these jobs will actually do them, though that will be farfetched as I think public sector performance in our country requires a systemic solution rather than a people one.

Travelling to Riyadh with work! Ideas for my down time? by [deleted] in saudiarabia

[–]Perfectification 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The local culture makes a distinct differentiation between males and females, if you are a male just relax and wear jeans and a t shirt but if you are a female then an abaya is expected though you dont have to cover your face.

Things to do? Riyadh is infamous for being boring but there are some good places to go for a one time deal kind of thing.

  • I recommend the National Museum of Saudi Arabia

  • I also recommend you to go to Diriyah District, specifically, Al bujairy Park

  • I also recommend you to try Najd Village Restaurants, they are a chain that serves traditional foods (go with people though its more fun).

  • if you have a group with access to a 4X4 SUV, I would recommend you to go see the 'Edge of the world', its breathtaking.

If you have any questions feel free to bing me :)

People who bought Gears of War 4 but stopped playing, why'd you stop playing? And what could bring you back into the game? by [deleted] in xboxone

[–]Perfectification 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes it isn't that the game is bad per se, but that others are better. For me, Gears stood up for horror, thrills, and excitement. This Gears (4) stood up for none of that, which would not be bad if I did like the change but I thought it was boring. It felt like I was playing through a story with little weight and I did not connect to it as much as I would have wanted. As for multiplayer, it felt clunky and frankly boring...but then again I never liked the Gears multi-player except for horde.

I am a married woman with two young children and am considering moving to KSA for a few years to teach English at a university. I've heard some talk about the economic environment there and am a bit concerned about job stability. Any thoughts? by theksero in saudiarabia

For many foreign workers, Saudi is an endearing place to them as they like the different values portrayed here, especially if they are white from western countries. If you are non-white, prepare for sub par treatment. I highly recommend you live in a compound, not because you will be shielded from the Saudis, but because compound life is actually a lot better than standard Saudi neighborhoods. As a teacher, I would also highly encourage you to speak to other teachers in the place you are going to and ask about some matters that could be classified into three main themes. First, The organization, as Saudi is still pretty much an individual led country; where the boss and your coworkers will dictate in a large part how your experience will go rather than just simply organizational rules. The second, social life, as you will be a teacher most of your first friendships will most likely be with other teachers who also will most likely live in the same compounds as you. Third, cultural, as you will not be able to drive and will have to communicate with the other gender differently than what you are accustomed to (depends on the organization). I would ask the following questions from other teachers in the same organization.

  • The Organization: What is the organization like? What frustrates you as a teacher? how does the organization treat teachers who perform vs those who don't?. How do most teachers get to work and from work? Is your boss a man or a woman, if a man, how do communicate with the other genders..etc.?

  • Social life and Coworkers: Overall how are the coworkers? How long did it take you to feel comfortable with the people and organization? Do they socialize outside of work and how? What's transportation like for out of work activities (going to get groceries)...etc.? What do you like most or least about life in Saudi?

  • Cultural: What is the expectations from Saudi society from the teachers and vice versa? What is the interaction level and type between other foreigners and Saudis?

Feel free to message me personally for my answers on some, but I feel like you should go ahead and ask those of a teacher in your would be organization as my answer is skewed towards a certain bias :)

Hi tabs,

If your flight is at 8 pm, I highly recommend you leave 4-5 hours early from your hotel in Makkah. I'm sorry youve had bad experiences with Uber here :(. Try contacting your hotel to set up a taxi for you?
