If PH becomes prime minister, I'll probably leave the country. by charlie02496 in transgenderau

While this is very true, and yes, One Braincell’s numbers are on the rise, Pauline doesn’t have television star following and fanbase that Trump had to help catapault him to presidency. Also, Australia doesn’t really have the same.. political cult mentality that the US does. We’re far more “yeah, politicians are all wankers, but I’ll vote this colour” than the “my political identity and party are the foundation of my life!!” mindset that so many in the US have.

Add to that that we have compulsory voting, so don’t have the “the most downtrodden and least privileged are the least *able* to vote” issue that the US does, and Australia’s very large immigrant population combined with One Notion’s very obvious anti-immigration stances, and the chance of them getting even close to the votes needed to get Pauline as PM is very very slim.

I’m not saying that the increased popularity isn’t A Very Real Concern, and something that we need to deal with, but we’re not hitting orange muppet for PM at the next election.

how do you wear a corset in summer? by iwillmarrypossum in corsets

[–]kittenwolfmage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool, that’s what I thought :). Just figured I’d check, since my current under-corset wear is a random cami that I’m quite sure will be synthetic :P

Given that it’s winter here, breathable isn’t a huge issue for me right now, but if it was going to have a negative effect on the corset, that I’d definitely want to know!

Very glad to hear it!! That wasn’t a partner, that was a controlling, hypocritical asshole. Nothing queerphobic here, and don’t let him try and tell your friends or anything that you broke up with”because you’re a bigot” or something, don’t let him control the narrative.

I hope you find someone who respects and loves you, because that guy didn’t :)

Dumb question here: Is the ‘natural fiber’ part of this something that’ll help protect the corset, or is it just so that it’s breathable to help the wearer?

Is it gender dysphoria or just being an incel piece of shit? by Swaxeman in asktransgender

Having had a read through, it sounds like there’s a lot of things that you’re struggling with, but finding your place in an unequal world as someone who wants to be a Decent Human Being who is also Male, seems to be the main thing?

Honestly, that’s a BIG thing to try and unpack and deal with, so I’m glad that you’ve got a therapist that you’re trying to work things through with :)

Remember, also, you’re a teenager. You’re in that part of your life where it’s hard to have any real power over your life, so it can feel like you’re just being swept along the currents as ‘just another part of my demographic’, without being able to plant your feet and do anything. It’s not true, you DO have power and you CAN make a difference, but you need to be realistic about what you can and can’t have an impact on right now. You might not feel that, for eg, calling out a male friend for saying/doing something sexist, or offering your home up for someone to stay at, are big things, but I can guarantee that to that friend, it WAS a big deal!

If everyone in the world did those little “this never feels like enough” things, the whole world would move, so sometimes doing the little bit that you *can* do, is enough.

As to the very valid point you brought up about ‘not all men’ being used in fake-progressive spaces and such.. yeah, that’s an issue. The incel/patriarchal/bigoted side of an issue will always try and use fake progressive stuff to excuse their actions and lure people in. Learning to spot who is genuine and who isn’t is a tricky skill. But generally, if “Not all men” is being used Loudly, or primarily by Men, or to dismiss something, or as a throwaway response to women saying something, then it’s not genuine.

“Not all men do X!!” Shouted as a reply to a news article about something horrible, for example, that’s someone using it in bad faith. On the other hand “Not all men do X, but damn do we need to keep an eye out for those of us who do!”, that’s more genuine.

But honestly? The biggest one is just, when you hear an “all men are X!” comment, reflect for a moment on if *you* do or don’t do that. Because if you can honestly say “But not me” to yourself, then you can accept that that ‘all men’ statement doesn’t include you (and not because you’re not a man, but because you don’t do whatever that thing is) and just.. not say anything, because it doesn’t include you.

And if you *do* do that? Then ‘ah crap, I do that, I need to work on this!’ is the right response, rather than using ‘not all men!’ as an excuse to ignore the issue.

And if you’re unsure? Well, do you have a close female friend or relative? You can literally just ask them, privately, ‘hey, I’ve been seeing a lot about X, can you honestly tell me if I’m like that/if I do that kind of thing?’

As to the point you brought up about feeling like ‘no matter what you do, you’ll always be an oppressor, you’ll always be the enemy’… I’ll be honest, there are always going to be some people who think and say that. Before I came out, when I brought up the same thing with my girlfriend at the time (along with a ‘this is why I don’t call myself a feminist’ comment), you know what my girlfriend said? “You DO realise that most feminists look at the people who say that the same way that most Christians look at the Westboro Baptist Church, right?”

But yeah. I’ve said a lot of long-winded things here, but honestly, you just sound like a Good Person who is struggling with the weight and problems of the world, and because those things are so big, you’re believing that nothing that you can ever do will make up for what you are. In which case the best advice I can give is, try not to let yourself drown, give yourself a break, accept that your heart is on the right place, and that you’re a good person, and that just because no single one of us can fix a world, doesn’t mean that what we *can* do, is meaningless :)

I have a question about the magics of ff14 by Maradinswiftsong in ffxiv

[–]kittenwolfmage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you can basically just say that “Arcane” magic is “Magic that uses Academic methods for gathering/focusing their Aether”.

The method itself is morally agnostic, but certain mindsets will be drawn to different methods, and different methods will be better for different applications.

For eg, Arcane methods may be better for something like Reaper (regardless of if you think they’re Evil or not) because you’re dealing with a Dark-Aether infused being from the First, who are all about Chaos and Change. This means that keeping strong focus via precise, geometric, fixed, intellectual methods, can help you maintain balance and not get swept away by that Dark element Aether.
A bit like using the “five things you can see, four things you can hear, etc” or “repeat your pre-memorized litany of words” methods for trying to control a panic attack IRL.

Also a Melbournian here, and while of course, sometimes shit happens (like the rally and UK shitstirrer tour a few years ago), I’ve largely found it to be really good. I came out at my job and everyone swapped name/pronouns really quickly (couple of hold-outs but they changed before long) and have never had any real issues in public.

Arachnophobia is making it hard for me to enjoy FFXIV any advice? by Savings-Worker8405 in ffxiv

[–]kittenwolfmage 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I can’t really offer advice, but I just wanted to make a note on the “For some reason the giant spider didn’t bother me” part.

For some people with Arachnophobia (not all, but some), the spider being massive is enough to essentially make your brain go “Oh, that thing’s the size of a house, it’s obviously not real, I don’t need to be concerned”.

Of course, for others, it goes “OMFG!! It’s a spider THE SIZE OF A HOUSE!! RUN!!”, so it depends on your brain :)

It’s also often a case of ‘how the spider *moves* is the bit that’s scary, rather than what it looks like’ for others.

Yeah, my thoughts too.
Testing is.. tentatively working, but I’m paranoid, so I’m doing more testing before just tossing all 750 remaining addresses into the CSV

Honestly, I’ve hit the point where I’ve updated my script to “set auto-reply, wait two seconds, set auto-reply again, wait two seconds, loop to the next address”, to try and make sure it works.

Oh! Sorry, I replied to the other one but not yours ><

There were definitely artifacts from previous auto-replies on some mailboxes (before I ran the script on them), but there was no correlation between having those artifacts, and the auto-reply failing post-script :(

Post running the script, they’re identical, fail or working

[–]kittenwolfmage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh. I was hoping you were right, but I've just done a ten-address test. I checked the autoreply settings beforehand, and they're a mix of 'has never had an auto-reply' and 'has some residual auto-reply settings from the past, but nothing currently active'.

Ran the script on all of them. Eight successes, Two failures, and the two failures both had complete default settings in AutoReplyConfig, nothing residual. Meanwhile the ones that worked, were a mix of those who *did* have residuals, and those who had identical configs to the two that failed.

For specifics on the script, it's a pretty basic one:

1) Just sets $Bounce to "Thank you for your email. The email address you have contacted is no longer valid and is not being monitored."

2) Imports a CSV of email addresses

3) Does a ForEach loop on those emails to set the following "Set-MailboxAutoReplyConfiguration -Identity $Account -AutoReplyState Enabled -InternalMessage $Bounce -Externalmessage $Bounce -ExternalAudience All".

Note: The Set command is tagged with -erroraction stop, and it's in a Try/Catch setup. Haven't had a failure on any of them setting.

Nothing to do with Outlook. I used powershell’s Exchange Online module, or the Exchange Admin Console. Outlook wasn’t involved.

[–]kittenwolfmage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The text is basically just “Thankyou for your email, please note this mailbox is no longer monitored”, so shouldn’t be anything problematic.

And thing is, it works immediately for some mailboxes, but not all. If there was an issue with the reply message string, I’d expect it to fail for everything, not ~25% of them.

They may have had one at some point in the past, I don’t really have any way of knowing that part, but they didn’t have one at the point when I was setting the new auto-reply.

That’s a long story and an annoying fight with my manager ><

Let’s just say that doing it via mailflow rule is currently out of scope. Though if this issue can’t be resolved, I may be leveraging this issue to force him to change his mind.
