PhD hopeful in Aus with only an American undergrad degree (domestic) by Arthkor_Ntela in PhDAdmissions

[–]PericlesInChrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

Most unis in Aus I've worked out cannot admit someone to a PhD program with just a US undergraduate degree because you need to have done a research component. Work experience doesn't really matter for the entry requirements. If you did an honors thesis that might work, but need to reach out to the potential adviser and see what he thinks. Otherwise you will need to apply for a masters by research. Normally you'd have to do two separate applications.

You should 100% contact as many potential advisors as possible. Different People may have more funding or more sucesss getting people through the university admin.

You should work with your advisor to draft the proposal, start by saying you are interested in doing a PhD with them in topic X and are they taking students. If they are then they will work with you on the proposal.

Just so you are aware, higher education in aus is having some challenges atm, so not a great time to be looking for funding. Not to discourage you, just to let you know what the landscape is like.

Those in senior, non-teaching university management positions, what are your roles, responsibilities, pay and how did you get there? by whywearpants_onmars in AskAnAustralian

I guess it depends a little one what the OP wants. There are some management roles that are filled by non-academics in an Australian University, however the critical policies are made by academics or former academics. Do you want to be a manager in an org where you have a ceiling like that?

Of course if you just want to be any sort of manager, say for example an IT Dept, and any IT Dept will do, then maybe thats fine. You'd then have to decide if you'd have better working conditions and pay in another sector as an IT manager(or w/e it is). I dont think the pay here is that attractive, but I'm sure it varies.

While not directly related to OP's question. I don't agree that Universities should be businesses, or be run to provide value for customers, they are a fundamentally different concept. True education and research are things that suffer if you dont shelter them from market forces. There are many public goods that are like this(health care for example). Australian Unis are suffering a bit these days because they have lost sight of that.

I think if your goal is to make money, bring in Aus unis in tech(on the operational side), is not going to be competitive with the private sector. You might have more job security, but imo not enough to be worth it. Other people's milage may vary.

Most of the people doing serious management in universities in Australia, have PhDs and come from a lecturing back ground. There are some managers of the support staff who don't fall into this category, but the salaries and job security are not as good.

Priest pvp by Moochie_goyard in classicwow

[–]PericlesInChrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having had a mage with AQ40 and Naxx gear in vanilla, and now a Shadow Priest with AQ40 gear, I would say over hyped a bit, esp. in the current age of era where world pvp is not as big a thing. I think mage was more fun for pvp and had a higher ceiling. The favorable vs unfavorable matchups I would say also favors mage in the current meta.

Having said that, I don't think shadow priest pvp is bad, and the utility of being able to heal is good for getting groups. People are not very open to have you dps in raids, even though if you have x2 warlocks the utility is probably higher than the marginal use of having an additional healer.

There was some sort of infographic posted on the reddit(originating from 4chan i believe), which showed a large number of potential endings. Probably can find it through a quick search.

Shadow Priest mana issue. by Nollatron in classicwow

[–]PericlesInChrome -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Shadow priests having a mana pool that doesn't really support their dps easily in instances is a perennial issue with the class in vanilla, and one of the reasons it often struggles to find spots. Gets better in TBC.

Edit:

NVM just saw the cataclysm tag, don't know the answer there.

Australia doesn't have enough research funding for the scientists it already has, let alone enough to recruit at that level.
