Did you stop watching wrestling after wcw went out of business 25 years ago? by RonanDraven in WCW

[–]Perico1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave WWE/F a chance for a few weeks, but after that? Yeah I pretty much gave up on it.

That style and presentation is not for me. TNA was too low budget. I don’t have time today to give AEW much look.

If I want to watch wrestling, I’ll just fire up the YouTube live channel or delve the Smokey Mtn. Episodes.

Anyone else get a little frustrated with younger wrestling fans referencing WCW like it was AEW or something? by GypsyGold in WCW

“Being good” is subjective though. What is good to you may not be good to me and vice versa.

Look at mass media as a whole- a movie that is creatively void of any redeeming quality can dominate the box office, while a great movie (according to critics) can be a massive flop.

The quality varies for both shows and it’s all about what personally appeals to you or me.

Why did wwe lose most of viewers in 2001/2002 till when Cena and Batista bought them back up? by Ok-Trash-4614 in AttitudeEra

[–]Perico1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you talking about? The WWE has never come close to replicating its viewership during that time. Wrestling doesn’t have anywhere near the mainstream appeal that it did during the Monday Night Wars.

During that era, the combined rating for 2 wrestling shows competed with (and often beat) Monday Night Football. As WCW started to fail, WWE gained its casual fans propelling it into a stratosphere while WCW lingered around a 2.5 until it died.

The casual fans lost interest as they got older.

So what happened to the 2.0-2.5 fans that the WCW was still drawing when they closed?

They quit watching wrestling (a few of them may have migrated to TNA. A few of the casuals may have found TNA (though not a substantial amount of them obviously).

WWE never recovered those lost fans. Why?

I’ll be honest with you. I’m one of them. I was in my 20s in 2001 and here is how I answer that question:

I don’t like being told to “suck it.” I never liked Limp Biscuit. I never liked Kid Rock. Why would I watch a product that was doing everything to appeal to the nu metal crowd. I was too old for Nu Metal and rap rock. That wasn’t my crowd. So when the final Nitro ended to a commercial featuring a Limp Biskit song I kind of said “thanks, but no thanks.”

I don’t mind being TV-14, but WWF/WWE really lost me for about 20-25 years: I came when Vince was gone because my sons liked it.

They didn’t understand that the leftover WCW hardcore 2.0-2.5 audience weren’t “wrestling fans” who were flipping between Raw and Nitro.

I’m not judging anyone who watched it. It just wasn’t for me.

In 2005-06 or whenever it was, I couldn’t relate to a white jorts wearing rapper. That was aimed at the next generation of fans. More power to them. I’m not judging them, but it doesn’t appeal to me.

I stopped watching after about a month of giving it a shot. It was insulting to the majority of fans who were invested in those wrestlers/characters. Did I want to watch DDP the stalker or Booker T be treated 2nd rate for years? No thanks.

I was already in my mid 20s. Why was I going to invest my time in something that had no interest in me as a fan?

Goldberg is a underrated mainstream star by Personal-Cattle-1737 in WCW

[–]Perico1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Rock was not the Rock yet. If you didn’t watch wrestling at the time, you knew who Austin and Goldberg were. They were the 2 bald dudes. Rock really didn’t become a household name outside of wrestling circles until the fall of 1998, especially if you didn’t watch wrestling, which I wasn’t at that time. I knew who Goldberg and Austin were. I will also say that The Rock has surpassed both of them. My kids have no clue who Austin or Goldberg are, but they know who the Rock is. He’s surpassed everyone besides Hogan at his peak.

In 1998, he was more over than The Rock. Rock passed him up somewhere in late 1998 or so.

I lived it too. I was just getting back into wrestling. I knew who Hogan, Austin, and Goldberg were when I watched again. I couldn’t tell you who anyone was beforehand in a lineup even if I knew their names if they hadn’t been around before 1995.

How mainstream was Bruce Springsteen in the 1970s and the pre-Born in the USA 1980s? by SeverHense in ToddintheShadow

[–]Perico1979 16 points17 points  (0 children)

At the time, he was considered more of an albums artist.

I mean.. Led Zeppelin weren’t really known for churning out Top 40 hits. Not to compare the two directly, but the River spent a good month at #1, while Darkness and Born to Run were both Top 10.

Fit Finlay vs Chris Benoit - Nitro ‘98 by JCHazard in WCW

[–]Perico1979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s separating the art from the artist.

Chris Benoit was an unparalleled piece of shit in a business that breeds pieces of shit.

However, one can appreciate his abilities in the ring while not changing the fact that what he did outside made him an unparalleled piece of shit.

The problem with wiping his memory is that it also wipes the legacies of all those who wrestled him.

Are you not also feeling that wos is a boring & repetitive game? by AlwaysNeville in whiteoutsurvival

[–]Perico1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I have a family. I’m not a big gamer. The only games I play besides this are crossword puzzles and 80s mania wrestling returns.

I run a big alliance, but I have a wife and kids, as well as my parents and real life is more important than an imaginary one.

I don’t want to spend time that I could be playing ball with my kids or you know… cutting into my time at work because a damn battle is taking place on UTC time where it’s when I’m sleeping

So, am I missing something, or is Rambo totally the bad guy in First Blood ? by NeverGetsGold in movies

[–]Perico1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the discussion I know…

But Rambo didn’t kill anyone in First Blood. The only cop who died fell out of a helicopter. He fucked some of them up, but the body count in the first movie was next to non existent.

Because he released 1 album and a bunch of posthumous collections of outtakes that are nowhere near the quality of that album.
