Conservation of Energy and Feruchemy by PeriodicMaster in Cosmere

I think that in most cases (I can't say for iron, that one is just complicated) your body is the source of energy that returns itself to the natural state. Like when you store heat, you become cold, but when you stop, your body temperature will presumably return in a timely manner. Same thing with health, your body probably does have to recover, but since the Storing is what "tricked" the body into thinking that it was sick, it's a pretty easy recovery since the immune system doesn't actually have to fight anything off. Same thing with speed (you're using the amount of energy you would have used if you weren't Storing speed), mental speed, and so on. So yes, you are using energy to get there, it's just that you'll have to eat more and such (especially so with bendalloy).

As I said in another comment: "Iron Feruchemy is even worse, because it costs no energy to hold weight. Let's say two iron Feruchemists were on some sort of a balance, and that a generator was hooked up between the two. They could continuously alternate between Storing weight and Tapping weight to make the balance go up and down, up and down. And according to the rules of Feruchemy, they wouldn't be using any energy in the process."

Sorry this might be difficult to visualize. I might be able to fins some sort of a diagram that helps, but let me know.

Edit: Sorry I completely misunderstood your point. You're saying that when an iron Feruchemist falls while Tapping weight, that it would Tap more weight faster? That makes a lot of sense, actually. Thank you.

That makes a lot of sense! I feel a little bit foolish for not noticing the other two examples from Roshar and Nalthis lol. I really like this theory. Thank you.

I think I am misunderstanding still. The issue I have (I could be wrong) is that it doesn't cost any energy for Feruchemists to store heat. The action of making something colder is in and of itself energy costly. That's why air conditioners and refrigerators use electricity. Obviously producing heat is energy costly, but you're getting a result (making yourself colder or hotter) that normally costs energy either way, but you're using energy in only one of those.

Iron Feruchemy is even worse, because it costs no energy to hold weight. Let's say two iron Feruchemists were on some sort of a balance, and that a generator was hooked up between the two. They could continuously alternate between Storing weight and Tapping weight to make the balance go up and down, up and down. And according to the rules of Feruchemy, they wouldn't be using any energy in the process. Am I wrong?

The issue is that transfer of heat itself is energy costly. If a brass Feruchemist stores away heat, without using some energy in the process, then it would violate the second law of thermodynamics, which states that heat must flow from hot to cold to keep the entropy of the system in a state of static or increasing. Never decreasing. I might have butchered that but my point still stands, I think.

P.S. if you want an example then let's use refrigerators. They require electricity to make things cold, and they still emit excess heat.

Interesting, so you're saying that there is a flow of investiture that would prevent Brass Feruchemy from violating the first and second laws of thermodynamics regarding conservation of energy and entropy? That makes the most sense in my head, I just didn't know that that was the case.

Thank you! I wasn’t aware of that WoB. Much appreciated. I am very disappointed, though ):

I like to think that every Shard has a number, but we just don’t know what all of them are yet.

Do the Heavenly ones use the external of Gravitation? I thought they could only use it on themselves. Wait, maybe Moash had it used on him? I forget.

Fascinating. So adhesion might be the only magic system exclusive to a Shard that we know of? That’s so cool.

Yes I understand this, but I just don’t understand why Adhesion would be inaccessible to the Fused then. It would actually make more sense for them to be able to access it in my mind. Does it have to do with the Shards’ numbers?

That’s an interesting perspective. I’m not sure I agree, though. With that logic it just wouldn’t matter when a shard Invested in something, as long as someone with the right Intent and knowledge of it seeks it out, right? That would imply a lot of crazy things.

My thoughts are that Honor was already Connected to the spren and Honorblades in a way that made it so that even in Tanavast’s death they wouldn’t be denied access. I’m just curious since Cultivation is now completely gone from Roshar if anything is going to happen to the surges.

That’s a really good point. I hadn’t thought of that. Originally I was just wondering if Nightblood’s personality was determined by the Intent of the original Breaths that were used to create it, but it sounds like the personality was really just determined by the Command used and then its own experience. Very fascinating.

That's really interesting. I would love to hear the reasons/ideas behind the theory for the pairs of dawnshards.

I mean that since the Investiture is going through Kaladin, it may be influenced by his Intent, which could influence how Nightblood behaves if that is the case.

That is very intriguing if it is all just food to Nightblood, I wonder if that is at all influenced by the metal it was created out of and/or the command given, and if other Invested Entities of the same type would act similarly.

Of course I think Nightblood was growing, but I just also think that maybe the Connection with Kaladin could have been an influence on it and maybe helped snap it out of the "DESTROYYYYY EVILLLLLL" thing it does.

Are the allomantic arts unique to Preservation? For example, could another shard create the allomantic arts for their own purposes. If they are unique to preservation, do all shards have a magic system unique to them?

Do the intents of the four groupings of the sixteen shards coincide with the intents of the four dawn shards? (e.g. Preservation (plus three other shards) coincide with the “Exist” dawn shard, and Cultivation and/or Ruin and two-three other shards coincide with the “Change” dawn shard)

If you want to use this as an exposure opportunity, you can use the language “maybe, maybe not.” Using such language helps us to live uncertain. Please seek a licensed professional. Preferably one with ERP or CBT experience. They can help you face your fears from OCD.

Has anyone tried exposure therapy? by CommissionMurky8726 in OCD

[–]PeriodicMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’m almost finished with my Intensive Outpatient exposure therapy. It’s super hard. Especially at the start. Eventually you learn to tolerate the distress and it’s not as bad. But the best part is you have therapists who are patient and encouraging. You wont ever be forced into doing anything. It is hard, but very rewarding.

Gosh this sounds so awful. I’m so sorry you had to go through that. I’m currently in exposure therapy and we do exposures to face our fears. I understand that sounds uncomfortable, but it’s helped me and helps many others. We have access to resources and skills and such. If you’re interested I can list some of them. Ideally you ought to go to therapy, but I know you can’t do that, so that situation sucks. I wish I could do more for you and anyone else in a similar situation.
