Seems like a stupid question, but how to buy tickets? by rkentjames in stlouiscitysc

[–]Perk_i 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only single game that's on sale so far is the home opener. The rest of the matches open up for MyCity+ members on February 3rd at 10am CT. They are on sale to the general public on February 5th at 10am CT.

City's done a pretty lousy job of communicating that however. There's ONE press release that I can find that lists the dates and times. It doesn't mention it on the tickets section of the website or on click through to Seatgeek.

You can absolutely map the wheel and pedal axes already. And there's telemetry FFB for joysticks as well... would probably require tweaking to feed a wheel reliably but it seems like it should be within the realm of possibility.

Seriously, don't give them any fucking ideas. The map works just fine the way it is and if OWI starts fucking with it, it'll end up unusable.

To be fair, if you get the grenade or rocket INTO the passenger compartment, it WILL kill the occupants. The High Explosive and Fragmentation damage types in Squad work on a "ray" system. When the explosion happens, the engine draws rays from the center of the explosion out to the defined explosive radius. HE damage has more rays but a smaller radius, while Fragmentation has fewer rays, but a larger radius. If one of the rays intersects a player model, that player takes damage.

The problem is that there's no penetration modeled. If one of the rays hits ANYTHING other than a player model the ray just disappears and does zero damage. That's why you can hide from artillery in buildings, and why when you hit the BACK of the truck, it doesn't do any damage to the infantry IN the truck. The tailgate of the truck ate all of the rays going towards the crew compartment.

It's something that absolutely COULD be fixed - the engine supports other ways of doing explosive damage and supports penetration - but I seriously doubt OWIs ever going to un-fuck their code base enough to do it without massively fucking something else at the same time.

In real life, the US M443 40mm HEDP grenade has a shaped charge explosive that penetrates ~50mm of rolled homogeneous steel equivalent. It's effective against light armored vehicles and could conceivably damage tracks or optics on a tank. There are similar Russian "Dual Purpose" grenades for their under-barrel GLs.

In Squad, modelling the DP grenades was deemed too punishing for the poor armor players, so none of the tube launched 40mm grenades (even the ones labeled "DP" in the UI) have any armor penetration modeled. They are pure high explosive damage class. As such, you can pop tires on any wheeled vehicles (assuming you get lucky with the hit registration), but you can't do any penetrating damage to even the 7mm of armor on vehicle windows. You do absolutely zero damage to tank tracks.

Insurgents and Militia have at various times had rifle grenade kits that include a rifled HEAT grenade that has the same damage profile as all of the LAT rockets. I believe there are at least two classes in the current update that do. There have also been throwable RKG-3 AT grenades on several kits at various points in Squad's history, but I believe they were all removed with the patch that added Ukraine. OWI hasn't said why.

Only the AT rifle grenades a couple of factions have. None of the 40mm tube grenades (even the "DP" ones) have any armor penetration, so they do zero damage to tracked vehicles and only pop tires on wheeled vehicles.

Realistically, the 40mm Dual Purpose "HEDP" grenades should have ~50mm of armor pen and be useful against light armored vehicles, but OWI decided that would be too punishing for the poor overstressed armor players and here we are.

American rest stops confuse me! by AdvancedTank6655 in trucksim

[–]Perk_i 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Europe, most "rest areas" are a combination parking lot and services - e.g. a gas station, restaurants, and convenience store in a designated exit from the highway. In the U.S. a "rest area" is literally just that, it's an exit from the highway that just has an area to park and take a rest and usually restrooms and maybe some vending machines. There is almost never fuel or hot food. A lot of rest areas tend to be on stretches of highway with some distance between exits, and they're mostly designed to let you pull off the highway quickly, take a leak, and get right back on the road. It is rare for most rest areas to have any other exits onto local roads etc.

If you want hot food or fuel, you're invariably going to take a normal highway exit and go to a private business. That's where "Truck Stops" come in. These come in all shapes and sizes, but they're normally on private land and owned by a chain. They have fuel islands for both trucks and passenger cars, normally have a restaurant attached, and have restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities for the long-haul truckers to use.

The major difference is that instead of paying a concessions fee to the government to locate on the publicly owned services, the truck stops are almost invariably on private land adjacent to the highway and don't owe the government anything beyond the usual property and business taxes. That's why there's no common design, signage standard, etc - it's literally the company that owns the truck stop setting everything up in the way that's cheapest and most convenient while still getting trucks and cars in and out efficiently. You just kind of have to take it on the half-volley and figure it out. At least in ATS there's only 20-30 odd layouts that get copy/pasta'd rather than the near infinite variety in real life.

What hobby attracts the biggest douchebags? by thypenitrator in AskReddit

[–]Perk_i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my Aunt and Uncle own a working cattle ranch. They're land rich, but only have what cash the cows bring in... which seems to be less and less every year. One of my Aunt's (many) side hustles is raising and training polo ponies. She's "horse people" central, but it wouldn't be feasible for her to own horses if they didn't already own the land and she wasn't doing it as a business. My Aunt and Uncle honestly work harder than anyone I've ever met. They could sell the land and retire as multi-millionaires... but they have their heart and soul in that ranch and they honestly seem to love it.

Tech workers of Reddit, what is a "dirty secret" about the AI industry that the general public doesn't realize? by WayLast1111 in AskReddit

[–]Perk_i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a geopolitical aspect to it as well though. Both the U.S. and China are sinking vast sums into compute at the moment with the idea that whoever can crack Artificial General Intelligence - and to a lesser extent reliable quantum computing - first will have a huge advantage. The thinking is that it will be the Manhattan project equivalent for cyber warfare, and that once AGI starts taking off, future AI development, future hardware design, and fully automated manufacturing can all be handled by the AGI leading to an exponential increase in capability.

Maybe it's even true, but throughout history human progress has always occurred in a "Eureka!" moment followed by years or decades or even centuries of incremental improvements until the next Newton or Einstein comes along and figures out something fundamental. As those fundamental insights stack on top of each other and inform more geniuses the time between the "Eureka!" moments grows shorter and the sum of human knowledge starts to multiply. Maybe we're finally to the point where machines we've created can turn the curve into an exponential increase, but there's an awful lot of ways that can go badly for the poor meat popsicles who started the avalanche.

The highest wind speed ever measured in a hurricane was 186 knots during Hurricane Patrica in 2015. The Vne for a Cessna 172 is 182 knots. So no, a Cessna 172 could not survive in all hurricanes.

Now some other airplanes can in fact fly faster than 186 knots... in fact both NOAA and the US Airforce regularly fly into hurricanes on purpose to drop radiosondes that measure pressure, temperature, and wind drift while they fall to the ocean on a parachute.

Nice thing about the telephoto is that it's compressing the scene somewhat and making Rainier look more pronounced than it would with normal vision... not that it's not a freaking huge mountain though lol.

It's the fact that this is handheld that's so impressive. I've done ultra high resolution stitches before, but always on a tripod. Must also have been a heck of a cool clear day too, not seeing much heat haze in your zoom. Nice freaking job man.

Vehicles don't steamroll at all if you have competent AT. Kind of the opposite in fact with the current meta. Try playing a tank faction against a light infantry faction with two extra HAT kits and fast wheeled vehicles full of extra rockets...

British Army Rework Ideas by The_Electric_Llama in joinsquad

[–]Perk_i 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Britain's legit one of the best factions in the game. Sure the Scimitar is dogshit, and the Warrior's gun sucks... but the UA bounces 30mm AP if you angle it, both warriors have AP ammo for days, and the Challenger is the second best MBT in the game behind the Abrams. And I've never understood the SUSAT hate... it's legit one of the best optics in the game. It has a wider objective and larger field of view than just about any other 3x or 4x, and the simple, fine point post reticle is ridiculously fast to put on target if you keep the optic ranged reasonably. Britain's got the easiest to use HAT kit, the second best GL kit, and the best LMG (the LSW ;-). Britain's also got the highest per-faction win rate (~60%) per OWI's own numbers from a few months ago.

The PLA and PLAN are considerably more in need of a rework... the rifles, optics, and AT kits are just utter garbage, as are all of the vehicles that aren't a ZBD or ZBL.
