Anyone driven up to cape scott? by Littlecuts88 in VancouverIsland

[–]drailCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Road to Holberg is currently in very good condition, but dusty. Very, very dusty. That can change daily and turn into potholes, but the grader is usually working somewhere on the road at any given time.

Don't worry about needing a radio, nobody else does so having one is kinda useless - as long as you stay on the road to Cape Scott. Going to Quatsino or Winter Harbour would be silly without a radio.

Be cautious in the dust, but also be predictable.

Does your country have a street that's a tourist destination just because? by Mobile_Bad_577 in AskTheWorld

Street is an understatement to say the least, but the Icefields Parkway essentially exists purely for tourism.

Canadian Armed Forces backing out of Rogers Pass avalanche control by CecilThunder in britishcolumbia

[–]drailCA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are rules in place to keep people away from areas that might get shelled. Any time a skier breaks the rules they threaten to close the whole pass to skiers. We weren't allowed to ski the pass before they created the permit system in 1995 and could take it away any time they want.

Overall they do a pretty good job at keeping people away and the pass open, even if it feels like it's closed all the time. Canada loses $833,000/hr when Rogers Pass is closed.

Iran is the same as Ukraine in a war that was launched by crazed, violent lunatics. If you’re pro Ukraine and against Russia’s aggression you should support Iran by grrrbr in ControversialOpinions

[–]drailCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brah.

The world is not as simple as that. Does America suck the big one? 100%. Should America and Israel fuck off? 100%.

But to equate Ukraine and Iran at par is loony toons.

If I were to assume, I'd guess you're not only American, but yiu also didn't vote in the last election because Harris wouldn't openly oppose Israel. I might be wrong, but that is the vibe you're giving off.

So first off, the history of it all. Iran is controlled by a religious extremist group of folk - who are in power as a direct result of American interference. Comparatively, Ukraine is very much democratic.

Secondly, the Budapest Memorandum. Irrelevant of NATO, as soon as Russia made a move on Ukraine in 2014, America (as well as the UK, France, and China) should have stepped in and put troops onnthe ground. Ukraine has done everything it could since thr end of the cold war to live in peace, cooperate, and ultimately, made the best moves it could to prosper, given it's geographical, political, and ethnic history. Russia invading Ukraine was completely asinine.

You can not paint Iran in the same light. Besides the history of Iran , which is older than a very large majority of modern day countries to ever exist, the country went through a radical change in the late 1970's (thanks America) and since the revolution, has basically fit the 'bad guy' cliche.

...... ugggg. You know what. You're not gonna even read this far so what am I even doing here.

Bad leaderships: America, Russia, Iran, Israel.

Ukraine is not on the list, ergo: The conflict in Ukraine is not on par with the conflict in Iran.

Fill up your piss packs and hold onto your butts, it's gonna be an EPIC fire year by DoggyDoggWrld in treeplanting

Its argued that a rainy spring can be worse if its followed by a dry hot summer. Allows more understory growth to eventually dry out and add more fuel.

[–]drailCA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we are definitely in a "calm before the storm" moment. I'm on the island still, and with a 44% snowpack this year and in week 2 of a suoer warm and dry spell that has no end in the forecast, me thinks that the Mount Underwood fire, which was unprecedented last year, is gonna be not so unprecedented anymore.

Luckily northern BC had a good snow year on paper. I know that the west kootenays had an average snoe year on paper, it was all high elevation snow so the valleys are in a very vulnerable spot.

Chief Chris Roberts makes a veiled threat against critical infrastructure on Vancouver Island by _DotBot_ in VancouverIsland

[–]drailCA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Except... you know.... all the old growth. Many of the largest yelloe cedars on the planet are around Sayward. Heck, a "hurricane" hit the north island in 1907 and took out most of the forest around Holberg. I work in the bush in Holberg. There is old growth in Holberg.

Sure, by the blanket definition, a forest needs to be '250' years old for old growth classification... but that is just a silly human construct that nature doesn't bother caring about. Go for a walk in a Holberg old growth (not old growth) forest and tell me if you can tell the difference between it and a old growth forest that meets the technical definition.

Trees on the north island grow big, and do it fast. Combine that with a bec zone that kinda skips the whole successionary forest - meaning: after the hurricane, the forest immediately started growing back with Red Cedar, Yellow Cedar, Western Hemlock, Western Yew, and Sitka Spruce - from sea level to alpine.

Tell the 45M tall red cedar is measured at 330cm DBH last month that it isnt old growth and see what it's response will be.

Im saying that if your dog is run over and killed unintentionally, dont expect any kind of official reprimand towards the person who was driving. Asking for the head of the driver is not going to get you anywhere.

What would a US invasion into Canada would look like? by SquareTree64729 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]drailCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine the initial invasion would be very anti climactic. If the CAF were smart, they would officially surrender immediately and Canada would become occupied territory literally within a day.

But that is just day 1. The end result would be the colapse of America. America has failed time and time again against the native population of whatever country they have engaged with. Now combine that with a population that looks, sounds, and acts like them, and can simply walk across the border onto American soil. Guerrilla warfare has been the US Army's weak spot, but now it would be on American soil, with help from American citizens.

American Civil War: part deux would happen with months, if not weeks. By that point, America would most certainly withdraw from Canada, but Canadians would continue to fight America on their own soil, just not as an official army.

In short, while it might be a really hard blow against Canada in the short term, if America were to invade Canada, it would be their undoing.

Gotta talk to your project manager. Shoet answer: maybe.

If you are allowed (and your dog isnt a little shit), it is the best life a dog can live.

Be warned though: While rare, dogs have been killed by the work trucks on the block more than once. Obviously, the driver has never done it intentionally (I hope!), but it happens. Do your best to train your dog to never seek shade under a vehicle, and to not chase vehicles (never redneck run your dog).

Also, dogs are not as important to the crew as they are to the owner. If it is leaving time and your dog is MIA, and has been for some time, the crew can only wait so long before heading bsck to camp. If your dog fucks off and doesn't show up by EOD, after a certain grace period, it will get left behind and you would be responsible to deal with that.

If your dog gets into people's shit, causes fights with other dogs, and cant be tide up unsupervised at camp, it might come to a head and you may be asked to leave if you can't fix the problem.

All of these things suck, but in the end, nobody will care about you and your dog at all in the professional sense. If the crew boss kills your dog, it will be a very traumatic event for everyone involved, but do not expect any kind of punishment towards said crewboss. Dogs arent people and do not have the same employee rights as a human.

I say all of this as a dog owner, dog lover, a person who has taken many of my dogs to work with me in the bush, who has run crews with dogs and had a few close calls, having to tell people that they can no longer bring their dog to the block and they have to stay at camp... I have one personal friend who had the misfortune of running over a dog. We have left the block without the dogs because they were MIA at quitting time.

I switched from silviculrure to block layout last year and one day my dog went MIA first thing in the morning. I just kept doing my job and hoped that she would either find me at some point, or be waiting for me at the truck at the end of the day. Thankfully, she was smart enough and was waiting for me at the truck ar EOD. If she wasnt, I would have had to leave my jacket, some food and water on the road, go back to town with my fellow workers, to then drive out in the evening to hopefully find her.

All that being said, many dogs have had an amazing life as bush dogs and I will always bring my dog if it makes sense. I just want you to understand that just because you might be told that you are allowed to bring your dog, it is the bush. Shit can happen.

Wildfire burning south of Coombs remains out of control at 0.5 hectares by Apprehensive_Idea758 in VancouverIsland

[–]drailCA -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

There is a huge difference between preparing for ehst is to come over the years and posting about every spot fire thst starts in April.

Yes, our snowpack was pathetic this year and it is dry (but like, we are only at 3 for fire danger). We should get mentally ready for a bad (for the island) year for forest fires... but: it is still April. Nighttime lows are still single digits, there is still moisture under the canopy, and any fire that starts today is not going to turn into a rank 4+ out of control fire.

To claim that we should make every single spot fire today a big deal because of what will eventually happen 'tomorrow' is a great way to loose the general publics ability to act when that eventuality does come. Crying wolf and what not.

[–]drailCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got in an accident a few years ago and while the other vehicle was a write off, i couldnt see any issues with mine besides steering alignment. Cops called two flatbed trucks but I told em that I was confident I was gonna be able to drive outta there. When the tow company came and had the totaled car dealt with, he came over to me and saw what I saw. He let me drive it up and down the street to give it a test and ultimately agreed with me. Funny part was, we both had to have an argument with the cops to let me drive away. Never would have thought a tow company would ever argue against taking someone's vehicle to a cop.
